Book excerpt: Free in the USA was written for people with children, people on a budget, people who are driving across the country, people who want to explore without it costing the earth. This book lets everyone extend vacation dollars. Splurge on that expensive attraction, there are other places to visit that will balance out the cost. There are lots of articles and lists out there about great free places to visit. But it turns out these places aren't exactly free, or even places. Some are free only one day a week. Others are free but they are special events. A few say they are free, but then set an amount for a voluntary donation, or say that admission is by free will donation. The result is this book... 50 states (plus the District of Columbia) with over 1000 towns and 1800+ places to visit where admission is always free.As J. R. R. Tolkien said, "Not all those who wander are lost." Sometimes that's the best way to explore. Especially when it's free.

Book excerpt: From a can of Dr. Pepper, to the iconic sounds of Motown hits like Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross, and The Temptations, each of these uniquely American emblems began as a dream. From humble beginnings and against insurmountable odds, our culture pervasively clings to the notion that given equal opportunities, anyone can achieve the success of their wildest imagination. It’s the dream that has empowered countless entertainers, leaders, inventors, and historical figures to become and create to the best of their ability, and that still inspires us today. Travel journalist and author Bill Clevlen opens up the topic in Finding the American Dream, chapter by chapter, one dreamer at a time. Be guided to the place were they began their journey, as if you were traveling there yourself. Stand inside the small rural house were Johnny Cash grew up after the Great Depression. Explore the bottling plant where Dr. Pepper became America’s first nationally sold soft drink. Discover the very first Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant where 65 year-old Harland Sanders started a billion-dollar franchise. A flip through these pages will prove that the American Dream is not dead. The inspiring stories contained within demonstrate that anyone can still achieve greatness through hard work, determination, and of course, a little bit of luck.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Opened on May 1, 1854, the State Almshouse at Tewksbury was a venture by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to provide economical care for state paupers. Originally intended to accommodate 500 residents, by the end of 1854 the almshouse had admitted well over 2,200 paupers, thus necessitating future expansion. Although the virtue of the institution was called into question in 1883 by Gov. Benjamin Butler, who decried Supt. Thomas J. Marsh, the almshouse would continue to serve the destitute of the commonwealth for years to come. The name would later be changed to Tewksbury State Hospital to reflect the inclusion of the mentally ill, the sick, and those suffering from infectious disease as patients. Today, the hospital remains operational in providing specialized care in the Thomas J. Saunders Building while also serving as host to various governmental agencies and community organizations like the Public Health Museum on its historic campus. Although many of the early structures were demolished in the 1970s, the Tewksbury State Hospital remains an active institution brimming with architectural beauty and a rich public health history.

The main structure of Independence Hall was completed in 1732, and the final casting of the Liberty Bell was completed in 1753. Visited by over two million people yearly, these historic icons have been used as backdrops for many political and social demonstrations and speeches. Filled with images from the archives of Independence National Historical Park, Philadelphia Department of Records, and collections from around the country, Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell illustrates how these two historic relics generate a sense of pride and patriotism set forth by the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.
