A routine that keeps him functioning, a job as a tattoo artist that keeps his rent paid and food in his belly, and if he's alone through it well, there are worse things to be. With his complicated past, Derek is sure no one would ever want to deal with the struggle that comes along with loving someone who has severe PTSD. Especially since the man who spent years abusing him is now in hospice, and Derek has taken over his end-of-life care. Derek's resigned himself to living and dying alone, and maybe that's okay. Then one night, during a raging storm, Derek finds himself stuck in an ATM vestibule with a quiet stranger, and it's in that moment his world begins to change. Basil Shevach is new to Fairfield, taking over his dead aunt's florist shop. He's also Deaf in a small town, where he and his sister are the only ones not hearing. It's not to say he hates it there, but he's not sure Fairfield is the place for him. At least, not until one night, when a storm leaves him trapped inside the bank with a man quietly panicking against the glass door. He's immediately intrigued by this unbelievably attractive stranger with bright tattoos covering his arms and haunted eyes, but he's also bitter because he's dated a hearing man before and it ended as badly as it could go for him. He had resolved years ago to never make that mistake again, but somehow, the frightened man trapped with him in that little room, crawls under his skin and no matter what he tries, he can't seem to shake him. Will the two of them be able to find their way together, or will their pasts prevent them from being able to find happiness and contentment when they need it most?Free Hand is the first book in the Irons and Works series. If technology is the new addiction, then multitasking is the new marching order. We check our email while cooking dinner, send a text while bathing the kids, and spend more time looking into electronic screens than into the eyes of our loved ones. With our never-ending to-do lists and jam-packed schedules, it's no wonder we're distracted. But this isn't the way it has to be. Special education teacher, New York Times bestselling author, and mother Rachel Macy Stafford says enough is enough. What it does mean is seizing the little moments that life offers us to engage in real and meaningful interaction. Book excerpt: A memorable, edgy debut exploring the climate crisis and young women on the verge of transformation These hip, thoroughly modern stories introduce us to young women grappling with the climate crisis and trying to make decisions that will affect the rest of their lives. Two admirers of Anne Carson decide the path to liberation is to ?become men? and embark on a mythic journey; a graduate student reports on the progressively unhinged unravelling of her climate change research project; a park ranger goes to extreme lengths to save his beloved tortoises; a woman freezes her eggs and then finds she can get glimpses into each potential life. As we travel with our protagonists to places at once familiar and thrillingly strange, Georgina Beaty fearlessly probes the ambitions and confusions of her generation. Wholly unexpected yet wildly entertaining, The Party Is Here daringly announces the arrival of a writer who brings explosive energy and an unforgettable flair all her own.

Book excerpt: A spellbinding novel celebrating Indigenous sensuality; the first erotic novel written by an Indigenous woman in French When it was first published in Quebec, The Lover, The Lake was heralded as the first erotic novel written by an Indigenous woman in French. Today, as it is translated into English for the first time, author Virginia Pesemapeo Bordeleau would rather call it a celebration of sensuality, another first. At a time when Indigenous peoples were being dispossessed of their land and history as well as their relationship to the body, the love explored by Wabougouni and Gabriel is an act of defiance. Their intimate connection plays out on the shores of Lake Abitibi in an affair as turbulent and unfathomable as the lake itself. "The aim here is to break free of the bonds of wounds the priests' abuse has left on our bodies and souls, wounds linked to loss--of land, of intimate spaces, of identity both as an individual and community member, of sexual identity, of delight in the body, of innocence and the uncomplicated nature of lovemaking. My hope is that this novel will serve to unearth the seed of joy buried deep in our culture, still profoundly alive . . . The Lover, the Lake shows us that we are not just suffering and victims: we can also be pleasure." -- Virginia Pesemapeo Bordeleau, from the prologue

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DRAWING is the expression of an idea: Art must come from within, and not from without. This fact has led some to assert that the study of nature is not essential to the student, and that careful training in the study of the representation of the actual appearance is mechanical and harmful. Such persons forget that all art ideas and sentiments must be based upon natural objects, and that a person who cannot represent truly what he sees will be entirely unable to express the simplest ideal conceptions so that others may appreciate them. Study of nature is, then, of the first and greatest importance to the art student.A drawing may be made in outline, in light and shade, or in color. The value of the drawing artistically does not depend upon the medium used, but upon the individuality of the draughtsman making it. The simplest pencil sketch may have much more merit than an elaborate colored drawing made by one who is unable to represent truly the facts of nature, or who sees, instead of the beauty and poetry, the ugliness and the imperfections of the subject.OBJECTS FOR STUDY:We hear a great deal now about the cultivation of the sense of beauty by the choice of drawing models. Many go so far as to say that nothing but the most beautiful forms should be given from the start, and, asserting that the cube, cylinder, and other type forms are not beautiful, they say that they should not be used, but that beautiful variations of these type forms should be provided. More definite information than this is rarely given. We are not told what natural objects are beautiful, and cheap enough to be provided, or how these objects of beauty are to be obtained, if they are not provided by the city. Such advice as to the use of beautiful models must be very pleasant and valuable to the drawing teacher, who so often fails to secure the money necessary to provide the cheap wooden models costing a few cents each ; and we do not wonder that special and regular teachers often regard this subject as one having no standards and no authorities.Much of all this commotion about beautiful objects of study is raised by those who, suffering from criticism, have in the desire to escape it plunged headlong from one set of mechanical rules for a series of lessons for the public schools, to another set less arbitrary in certain directions, but still mechanical, and if possible, more harmful than before, because attempting more. The average teacher can readily learn to discover at a glance whether or not the drawing of a cube represents the object as it might appear. She can do this even without seeing the model from the pupil's position; and the student can compare his drawing with the object and discover its errors more easily than he can in the drawing of a cast, a leaf, a figure,or any other object of beauty, in which the beauty depends upon lines which are subtile and which require a trained eye to see at all truly.

Book excerpt: In this handy guide to figure drawing, tutor Helen Birch explores 100 life drawings and portraits by contemporary artists. Of practical use to beginners and experts alike, Drawn from Life is a celebration of the most playful, personal, and experimental approaches used by modern artists and illustrators. Traditional techniques sit alongside new media in neatly organized entries so you can dip in and out for advice or flick through for inspiration and ideas. This is the perfect book to give you the confidence to try new techniques and explore unfamiliar styles. The human body is one of the greatest subjects in art, and one of the most varied. Drawn From Life highlights and examines the different techniques, qualities, and effects of each piece. Offering a bold, refreshing change from other run-of-the-mill figure drawing books, it adopts the unique approach of teaching drawing via the images themselves, focusing on the way portraits can be treated using a whole range of different techniques, rather than looking at how to master one single style. Practical tips are provided throughout the book on topics such as tone, perspective and colour. Readers are encouraged to discover the ways in which similar subjects and styles are executed by different artists, while also being inspired to use the tips in the book as a way of building on existing skills. Organised into chapters according to the technique exemplified - line, tone, colour, wash, shading and mixed media—artwork is featured large and luscious, accompanied by extended captions, insightful tips and practical advice. A visual index at the front of the book ensures easy navigation.

Book excerpt: An innovative, gorgeously written story about the small decisions that shape our lives. Meet Sylvie -- funny, sly, sensual and flawed. She can't always count on herself to make good choices. She may or may not recognize a life-or-death moment, may or may not cancel her own wedding with a day to spare, might just try to walk past store security with a little something in her pocket. Like all of us, Sylvie must make decisions that have reverberations for years to come. Unlike the rest of us, Sylvie gets to live more than one life. In airy prose imbued with humour, this novel asks the big questions: is there a right path and a wrong path, or does each possibility hold its share of pleasure and pain? Does a person have an immutable self, or is her essence dependent on circumstances? In this energetic and innovative book, Leona Theis creates a world without the usual limits and a protaganist who is conflicted, charismatic, brave, and full of curiosity. If Sylvie Had Nine Lives is for everyone who has ever asked, What if...?
