Book excerpt: In the mage realms of Elaria, those born with magic rule and those without serve at their mercy. Magic manifests in the form of specific abilities, affording mages the ability to wield fire or ice or gifting others clairvoyance or the ability to heal. Since magic is passed down genetically, those strong in magic are more likely to produce heirs similarly gifted. Because of this, noble houses throughout the ages have wed their heirs to those who possess strong magical abilities, thus strengthening their houses. In this world ruled by magic, Ethanos Blagen is the first person born immune to its power, whether to his benefit or harm, rendering him immune to those who wield it. Ethan is also gifted with great strength, an ability to self-heal, and an ability to rapidly learn and master most crafts, skills, or languages. With these abilities and his immunity to magic, Ethan's mere existence quickly becomes a threat to the social order of Elaria.Ethan is the firstborn son of the king of Astaria, Bronus Blagen, who himself is a lightning lord, the first mage born in five hundred years with the ability to cast lightning. Such a power sets King Bronus far above his contemporaries.Though born the heir to Astaria, Ethan hates kneeling and having others kneel to him and wants nothing to do with the throne, wishing only for his freedom and to choose his own path. His desire for freedom causes contention with his overbearing father, which leads to a series of adventures, once his grandfather uncovers a portal into a different world. Ethan is only drawn back to Elaria when war comes to his father's realm. At its heart, Free Born is about Ethan's desire to follow his free spirit, ignoring and often mocking the social mores that separate people into higher and lower castes, based solely on their ability to use magic. Though Ethan is free because he is free from magic and free from harm, it is his desire to be free from his duties as heir of Astaria that drives him. Ethan's great-grandfather revealed to him when he was a child of a prophecy called the Free Born, a prophetic figure that would bring ultimate freedom to all the people of Elaria. Ethan ignored the prophecy, believing one could not be truly free if one was bound to destiny.During his travels, he encounters a Vellesian mage healer named Allie. They are instantly drawn to one another by a power neither can fully comprehend. Allie harbors a dark secret that reveals an alternate destiny from his great-grandfather's vision, calling into question if he is truly Free Born or something far more foreboding. Will his destiny free the world or enslave it forever?

In 1961, Joy Adamson first introduced to the world the story of her life alongside Elsa the lioness, whom she had rescued as an orphaned cub, and raised at her home in Kenya. But as Elsa had been born free, Joy made the heartbreaking decision that she must be returned to the wild when she was old enough to fend for herself. Since the first publication of Born Free generations of readers have been enchanted, inspired and moved by its uplifting charm and the remarkable interaction between Joy and Elsa. Rediscover the original story, in the words of the woman who reared Elsa and walked with the lions, in this new edition, with an introduction by John Rendall.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Apartheid isn't over—so Malaika Wa Azania boldly argues in Memoirs of a Born Free, her account of growing up black in modern-day South Africa. Malaika was born in late 1991, as the white minority government was on its way out, making her a "Born Free"—the name given to the generation born after the end of apartheid. But Malaika's experience with institutionalized racism offers a view of South Africa that contradicts the implied racial liberation of the so-called Rainbow Nation. Recounting her upbringing in a black township racked by poverty and disease, the death of a beloved uncle at the hands of white police, and her alienation at multiracial schools, she evokes a country still held in thrall by de facto apartheid. She takes us through her anger and disillusionment with the myth of black liberation to the birth and development of her dedication to the black consciousness movement, which continues to be a guiding force in her life. A trenchant, audacious, and ultimately hopeful narrative, Memoirs of a Born Free introduces an important new voice in South African—and, indeed, global—activism.

Book excerpt: Jack Miller’s Born to Be Free examines the beauty and power of the American principles that our founding fathers gave us and the lack of knowledge about them in today’s society. With a preface by distinguished professor and author James Ceaser (University of Virginia), Miller goes on to advocate for communicating these values by introducing them back into higher education. Miller examines the overarching benefits of teaching our country’s founding principles and how that could impact America’s future. Miller founded the Jack Miller Center for Teaching America’s Founding Principles and History 14 years ago, launching a project to get these teachings back onto college campuses. The work has also allowed him to expand his own knowledge by discussing and debating our country’s founding ideas with professors and scholars from the Center’s network of over 900 academics across the country. In the book’s second section, Miller discusses the programs and growth of the Jack Miller Center along with its ongoing success in partnering with and supporting educators. Building on its success in higher education, the project has expanded to include graduate courses and seminars for high school teachers to enrich their knowledge of America’s founding principles and history and help them introduce these principles into their classrooms. The final chapters of the book dive into the personal life of Miller, exploring his past from a modest beginning, on through his college years, and eventually to becoming a prominent Chicago-area entrepreneur and philanthropist. All the while, he underscores the great need for education in our country’s founding principles, and why he has devoted so much time, effort, and so many millions of dollars into this project.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book chronicles the historical debate over whether to have a US central bank, the rise of currency manipulation in the United States, and sources of the US Civil War. The author documents the rise of a corrupt collusion between a large corporate elite (the American aristocracy), the centralized bank, and their inside-government representative base. Those who opposed them by demanding checks on the issuance of currency, so that currency value could not be manipulated to favor the elitist few, were eliminated. Over 600,000 US citizens were killed and the cartel won out. While the original intent of this powerful elite -- to totally dominate the private resource base and enslave the plebeian American citizen -- has yet to be fulfilled, hints lie all around that the time for its fulfillment may actually be close at hand.

Book excerpt: Born to be Free is a must-read for all who search for truth and inner direction. It reveals the true nature of total happiness, freedom and uninterrupted peace. On looking beyond the mind (thoughts, emotions and beliefs), the mystery of who and what you are is unraveled. Author Jac O' Keeffe led a busy healing practice after her sixth sense awakened. In her work, she found her clients' depression and emotional pain were caused by a quest for meaning and value: a spiritual yearning rather than external or physiological causes. Jac continued for seven years as a spiritual facilitator and teacher. Her personal quest led to that which is beyond mind - a transcendence of dualistic thought. Born to be Free skillfully leads the reader to the state of stillness, harmony and peace. That which is absolute and accessible to all - the truth - is clearly explained. The reader is invited to that which is beyond concepts and can be intuited by each of us to be the truth that underpins all. Jac O' Keeffe spends time in Ireland, Costa Rica and India. She facilitates satsang (spiritual gatherings), offering clear pointers to that which lies beyond the mind assisting spiritual seekers of truth.Publisher's Website: http: //www.strategicpublishinggroup.com/title/BornToBeFree.html Author's Website: www.jackieokeeffe.com

Book excerpt: "I neither love a slave nor fear a tyrant." John Lilburne, head of the Levellers and one of the 17th Century's most vivid figures, spelled out to the English the true meaning of democracy. He stopped at nothing to further his cause-whether it meant attacking Cromwell or King Charles I, or "stage managing" his own trial for life as though it were a play. "...successfully conveys the nature of his personality as well as his ideas...authoritative and illuminating..."--C.V. Wedgwood, Daily Telegraph.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by one of the world's most distinguished historians of early modern history, A Freeborn People is a provocative exploration of the ways in which the political cultures of the elite and of the common people intersected during the seventeenth century. David Underdown shows that the two worlds were not as separate as historians have often thought them to be; English men and women of all social levels had similar expectations about good government and about the traditional liberties available to them under the "Ancient Constitution". Throughout the century, both levels of politics were also powerfully influenced by prevailing assumptions about gender roles, and, especially in the years before the civil wars, by fears that the country was threatened by evil forces of satanic inversion. This dramatic reinterpretation of the Stuart period, based on the author's acclaimed 1992 Ford Lectures, begins a new chapter in the continuing debate over the historical meaning of Britain's seventeenth-century revolutions.

Offering a launching pad for you to burst into the realm of creative expression—that fun, fantasy world where the Creator is waiting to welcome you. There is a connection between creativity, your identity, the Church, and the world—and it is an important connection. Creativity is tied to all believers’ identity, all who are made in the image of the Creator, all who are born to create! Overflowing with many thrilling, modern-day testimonies, Born to Create emphasizes the magnitude of both craft—practice and excellence—as well as anointing. Many who have been freed to embrace their creative ideas and passions, whether in the art fields, business, or education, share their amazing stories with you. Their freedom allowed them to powerfully release healing, the prophetic, and the knowledge of God’s love into the marketplace. Live creatively, friends. If someone falls into sin, forgivingly restore him, saving your critical comments for yourself. You might be needing forgiveness before the day’s out. Stoop down and reach out to those who are oppressed. Share their burdens, and so complete Christ’s law… (Galatians 6:1 The Message). You will learn how the supernatural can be activated through what you create, and you will explore hindrances from understanding your creative destiny—your true identity.

Book excerpt: There are three editions of this book:1. The facsimile edition, a photocopy of the original book (this edition).2. A re-created edition, newly typeset and with high-quality images scanned from Adams's original prints.3. An eBook, based on the re-created edition.Ansel Adams visited Manzanar at the invitation of his friend, Ralph Merritt, its second director. He published about 65 of his photographs in a 1944 book, "Born Free and Equal," which was generally reviled, even burned, as the War was still ongoing.Adams didn't renew the copyright on the book and turned all of his Manzanar negatives and prints over to the Library of Congress. The LoC website has digital images of all 112 pages of the book, but the scanning was poorly done. I straightened the pages and cropped them slightly to fit the page size of this edition, but did not otherwise alter them in any way. This edition is exactly the same as the original, although it may be of a different physical size, as I don't know the size of the original.Copies of the original book are extremely rare and, judging from the one that the LoC scanned, even their copy is in terrible condition. This edition will make the book more accessible. To keep the cost of this book as low as possible, the resolution of the printed pages is fairly coarse, but it's still quite readable and provides the same reading experience as the original book. The re-created edition, at a higher price, is of correspondingly higher quality.
