Book excerpt: INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER As Europe buckles under Nazi occupation, Maisie Dobbs investigates a possible murder that threatens devastating repercussions for Britain's war efforts in this latest installment in the New York Times bestselling mystery series. October 1941. While on a delivery, young Freddie Hackett, a message runner for a government office, witnesses an argument that ends in murder. Crouching in the doorway of a bombed-out house, Freddie waits until the coast is clear. But when he arrives at the delivery address, he’s shocked to come face to face with the killer. Dismissed by the police when he attempts to report the crime, Freddie goes in search of a woman he once met when delivering a message: Maisie Dobbs. While Maisie believes the boy and wants to help, she must maintain extreme caution: she’s working secretly for the Special Operations Executive, assessing candidates for crucial work with the French resistance. Her two worlds collide when she spots the killer in a place she least expects. She soon realizes she’s been pulled into the orbit of a man who has his own reasons to kill—reasons that go back to the last war. As Maisie becomes entangled in a power struggle between Britain’s intelligence efforts in France and the work of Free French agents operating across Europe, she must also contend with the lingering question of Freddie Hackett’s state of mind. What she uncovers could hold disastrous consequences for all involved in this compelling chapter of the “series that seems to get better with every entry” (Wall Street Journal).

Download or read book Factory Made written by Steven Watson and published by Pantheon. This book was released on 2003-10-21 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Factory Made: Warhol and the Sixties is a fascinating look at the avant-garde group that came together—from 1964 to 1968—as Andy Warhol’s Silver Factory, a cast that included Lou Reed, Nico, Edie Sedgwick, Gerard Malanga, Paul Morrissey, Joe Dallesandro, Billy Name, Candy Darling, Baby Jane Holzer, Brigid Berlin, Ultra Violet, and Viva. Steven Watson follows their diverse lives from childhood through their Factory years. He shows how this ever-changing mix of artists and poets, musicians and filmmakers, drag queens, society figures, and fashion models, all interacted at the Factory to create more than 500 films, the Velvet Underground, paintings and sculpture, and thousands of photographs. Between 1961 and 1964 Warhol produced his most iconic art: the Flower paintings, the Marilyns, the Campbell’s Soup Can paintings, and the Brillo Boxes. But it was his films—Sleep, Kiss, Empire, The Chelsea Girls, and Vinyl—that constituted his most prolific output in the mid-1960s, and with this book Watson points up the important and little-known interaction of the Factory with the New York avant-garde film world. Watson sets his story in the context of the revolutionary milieu of 1960s New York: the opening of Paul Young’s Paraphernalia, Truman Capote’s Black and White Ball, Max’s Kansas City, and the Beautiful People Party at the Factory, among many other events. Interspersed throughout are Watson’s trademark sociogram, more than 130 black-and-white photographs—some never before seen—and many sidebars of quotes and slang that help define the Warholian world. With Factory Made, Watson has focused on a moment that transformed the art and style of a generation.

Book Synopsis At Freddie's by : Penelope Fitzgerald
Download or read book At Freddie's written by Penelope Fitzgerald and published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. This book was released on 2013-03-18 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A London theater school resists the cultural shifts of the 1960s in this novel by the Booker Prize-winning author—with an introduction by Simon Callow. It is the 1960s, and London’s West End theaters all rely on Freddie Wentworth, the formidable proprietress of the Temple Stage School, to supply them with child actors for their productions of everything from Shakespeare to musicals to Christmas pantomimes. Of unknown age and origin, Freddie is a skirt-swathed enigma—a woman who by sheer force of character has turned herself and her school into a national institution. But as the cultural revolution transforms London, not even Freddie can keep its influence at bay. Basing this intimate novel on her experiences teaching at London’s Italia Conti stage school, Penelope Fitzgerald spins the story of Jonathan, a child actor of great promise, and his slick rival Mattie; Joey Blatt, who has wicked plans to rescue Freddie's from insolvency; and Freddie herself, who faces an increasingly urgent choice between her principles and the school’s survival.

Download or read book Black Postcards written by Dean Wareham and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2009-05-05 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A bewitching memoir about the lures, torments, and rewards of making and performing music in the indie rock world Dean Wareham's seminal bands Galaxie 500 and Luna have long been adored by a devoted cult following and extolled by rock critics. Now he brings us the blunt, heartbreaking, and wickedly charismatic account of his personal journey through the music world-the artistry and the hustle, the effortless success and the high living, as well as the bitter pills and self-inflicted wounds. It captures, unsparingly, what has happened to the entire ecosystem of popular music over a time of radical change, when categories such as "indie" and "alternative" meant nothing to those creating the music, but everything to the major labels willing to pay for it. Black Postcards is a must-have for Wareham's many fans, anyone who has ever been in a band, or the listeners who have taken an interest in the indie rock scene over the last twenty years.
Book Synopsis The Sixth of September by : Callista Bowright
Download or read book The Sixth of September written by Callista Bowright and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2019 with total page 896 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Olivia comes from a simple Lancashire background, where her terrible, traumatic childhood leads on to further drama, pain, and tragedy, which mould her into a tough, beautiful fighter. Sophie is raised in wealth and comfort; she has education, talent, and intellect but no confidence. She struggles, in her hippy way, through similar life experiences – and appalling losses – with nervous bravery. Both are sensual, raunchy, strong, and loving women, who defy society’s hypocrisy. Then, one September day, their worlds collide. They could be bitter rivals, but they are intelligent women, who combine their strengths to face, and to cope with, the past and the present trauma. Although total opposites in many ways, they develop a strong bond and prove that former horrors, abuse, and wounds can be healed and used to develop formidable strength; that women are tough, intelligent, and capable; and that their lives must be lived true to their needs and beliefs. They live through searing reality, but their hopeful, humourous fight back makes them unforgettable. A gritty, no holds barred, emotional and good humoured journey through two very real lives.
Book Synopsis Finance and Democracy by : Alessandro Vercelli
Download or read book Finance and Democracy written by Alessandro Vercelli and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-19 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an extension of the author's last book (Crisis and Sustainability: The Delusion of Free Markets, Palgrave Macmillan, 2017) and sheds light on the evolution of the financial system after the 2007/08 crisis and on changes and developments in the regulatory framework that have taken place concurrently over the last ten years. The book’s central theme addresses the neoliberal philosophy of financial regulation and, in particular, the role of self-regulating markets in the finance sector and how this has affected incentives and behaviour within the finance sector. The author contends that neoliberal maxims have led us to believe that market-based finance is superior to, and safer than, a more rules-based regulatory regime for the sector, and then explains that experience suggests otherwise. The huge expansion of ‘financialization’ in the developed economies over the last two decades has greatly magnified the risks emanating from the impact of highly leveraged, risk averse, under-regulated finance on other sectors of these economies. The author concludes that financial institutions need to be encouraged to operate within a more socially responsible matrix that facilitates and promotes long-term economic growth coupled with social stability.
