Book excerpt: Robin Douglass presents the first comprehensive study of Jean-Jacques Rousseau's engagement with Thomas Hobbes. He reconstructs the intellectual context of this engagement to reveal the deeply polemical character of Rousseau's critique of Hobbes and to show how Rousseau sought to expose that much modern natural law and doux commerce theory was, despite its protestations to the contrary, indebted to a Hobbesian account of human nature and the origins of society. Throughout the book Douglass explores the reasons why Rousseau both followed and departed from Hobbes in different places, while resisting the temptation to present him as either a straightforwardly Hobbesian or anti-Hobbesian thinker. On the one hand, Douglass reveals the extent to which Rousseau was occupied with problems of a fundamentally Hobbesian nature and the importance, to both thinkers, of appealing to the citizens' passions in order to secure political unity. On the other hand, Douglass argues that certain ideas at the heart of Rousseau's philosophy—free will and the natural goodness of man—were set out to distance him from positions associated with Hobbes. Douglass advances an original interpretation of Rousseau's political philosophy, emerging from this encounter with Hobbesian ideas, which focuses on the interrelated themes of nature, free will, and the passions. Douglass distances his interpretation from those who have read Rousseau as a proto-Kantian and instead argues that his vision of a well-ordered republic was based on cultivating man's naturally good passions to render the life of the virtuous citizen in accordance with nature.

Dobruska was a businessman, scholar, and social philosopher, born into a Jewish family in Moravia, who converted to Catholicism, gained wide recognition at the Habsburg court in Vienna, and then emigrated to France to join the French Revolution. Dobruska, who took on the name Junius Frey during his Parisian sojourn, barely survived his book. Accused of conspiring on behalf of foreign powers, he was guillotined on April 5, 1794, at the height of The Terror, on the same day as Georges Jacques Danton. From Dobruska's ideas, which were widely used between the late eighteenth century and the first decades of the nineteenth century without attribution to their author, emerge some of the key concepts of the social sciences as we know them today. An enthusiastic and unfortunate revolutionary and sometimes a brilliant theorist, Moses Dobruska deserves a role of his own in the history of sociology. Book excerpt: Ireland's situation on the periphery of western Europe is sometimes seen as isolating it from lierary and intellectual developments during the eighteenth century. An examination of Irish private libraries and the book trade which supplied them shows instead an Irish readership au fait with Continental trends in literature, the sciences, politics and the arts. This study concentrates on French language works circulating in the country through the use of booksellers' and auction catalogues, book reviews and advertising. An exploration of the ownership of French language works points to an interested audience at different social levels and across the religious divides. Dublin dominated the Irish trade in French-language books, its major booksellers importing stock from London and European publishing centres and distributing books and periodicals wholesale and by catalogue to the larger Irish cities and towns. Domestic publication in French also occured in Dublin, Cork and Belfast. The provincial cities too had a role to play in the distribution of French-language material, opening up new markets in the smaller towns, using regional newspaper advertising and selling by catalogue. Questions of literacy and readership are explored, with particular emphasis on the teaching of French, indentifying teachers and schools throughout the country. The huguenot contribution is outlined, especially their role in the publication of French-language books in the first half of the century. Many Catholics received their education in Francophone countries, returning to Ireland with advanced French language skills. In elite circles the French language was a fashionable accomplishment. This works draws on comparable studies in Britain, France and Germany to place Irish readership of French-language materials in the broader context. The picture that emerges shows Irish readers as active participants in the cosmopolitan culture which flourished in eighteenth-century Europe.
