Book excerpt: What does you in—brain or heart? Frannie asks herself this question when, a week before she turns fifteen, her dad dies, leaving her suddenly deprived of the only human being on planet Earth she feels understands her. Frannie struggles to make sense of a world that no longer seems safe, a world in which one moment can turn things so thoroughly for the worse. She discovers an elegant wooden box with an inscription: Frances Anne 1000. Inside, Frannie finds one thousand hand-painted and -carved puzzle pieces. She wonders if her father had a premonition of his death and finished her birthday present early. Feeling broken into pieces herself, Frannie slowly puts the puzzle together, bit by bit. But as she works, something remarkable begins to happen: She is catapulted into an ancient foreign landscape, a place suspended in time where she can discover her father as he was B.F.—before Frannie. Delia Ephron makes you laugh and makes you cry—often at the same time!

Book excerpt: Argues that debates about Jewish identity and assimilation are signs of creative potential rather than crisis. Identity Papers argues that contemporary Jewish American literature revises our understanding of Jewishness and Jewish difference. Moving beyond the reductive labeling of texts and authors as “too Jewish” or “not Jewish enough,” and focusing instead on narratives that portray Jewish regeneration through feminist Orthodoxy, queerness, off-whiteness, and intermarriage, Helene Meyers resists a lachrymose view of contemporary Jewish American life. She argues that such gendered, sexed, and raced debates about Jewish identity become opportunities rather than crises, signs of creative potential rather than symptoms of assimilation and deracination. Thus, feminist debates within Orthodoxy are allied to Jewish continuity by Rebecca Goldstein, Allegra Goodman, and Tova Mirvis; the geography of Jewish identity is racialized by Alfred Uhry, Tony Kushner, and Philip Roth; and the works of Jyl Lynn Felman, Judith Katz, Lev Raphael, and Michael Lowenthal queer the Jewish family as they reveal homophobia to be an abomination. Even as Identity Papers expands Jewish literary horizons and offers much-needed alternatives to the culture wars between liberal and traditional Jews, it argues that Jewish difference productively troubles dominant narratives of feminist, queer, and whiteness studies. Meyers demonstrates that the evolving Jewish American literary renaissance is anything but provincial; rather, it is engaged with categories of difference central to contemporary academic discourses and our national life. “Ultimately, Meyers offers not only nuanced readings of many texts, but also a cogent argument about the generative possibilities for American Jewish futurity through an undoing of what constitutes normative understandings of Jewish bodies, families, and relationships.” — Journal of Jewish Identities “Identity Papers is an important, thoughtful text that will appeal to those with an interest in postmodern inquiries into multiculturalism, identity theory, and selfhood.” — MELUS “This is a sophisticated, nuanced critical study of contemporary Jewish (American) literature Taking an anthropological approach to Jewish and Judaic cultural expression, Meyers provides probing, subtle analyses Highly recommended.” —CHOICE

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Please-Don't-Rain Suitcase is a fictional novel that tells the story of the hardships and adjustments that Blake Davis experiences when he becomes an orphan. The story highlights the emotions he feels when he loses everything in life that matters to him. He is forced to put the shattered pieces of his life together and move forward through his tears, grief, fears of the unknown, feelings of hopelessness and emptiness, and the loss of dreams. In 1950, eight-year-old Blake Davis is thrown into foster care after his mother dies and his father is unable to care for him and his siblings. The Welfare Department intervenes, and the siblings are split up and scattered. Blake's story highlights the good and bad experiences that he lives through in foster care and later in an orphanage. Blake is placed in three different foster homes over a six-year period. He experiences both good and bad foster care. Blake is powerless and at the mercy of his caregivers. Not having a mother or father to intervene in his well-being leaves him vulnerable to abuse. The instability of foster care makes it impossible for Blake to put down roots. At the age of fourteen, Blake is placed in an orphanage in Western North Carolina. The story follows Blake through his years in the orphanage and how the orphanage helps prepare him for life in the outside world. When he graduates from high school, the orphanage sends him out into the world with a Bible, a twenty-dollar bill, and a please-don't-rain cardboard suitcase. All his belongings are packed into the one flimsy suitcase. Blake's story follows him into life outside the orphanage and focuses on how he copes and overcomes the circumstances of his shattered life in his search of love, happiness, and the place where he fits best in the world.

Book excerpt: This remarkably illuminating portrait of Tennessee Williams lifts the veil on the heart and soul of his artistic inspiration: the unspoken collaboration between playwright and actor. At a low moment in Williams’s life, he summoned to New Orleans a young twenty-year-old writer, James Grissom, who had written him a letter asking for advice. After a long, intense conversation, Williams sent Grissom on a journey on his behalf to find out if he or his work had mattered to those who had so deeply mattered to him. Among the more than seventy women and men with whom Grissom talked were giants of American theater and film: Lillian Gish, (“the escort who brought me to Blanche”), Jessica Tandy (the original Blanche DuBois on Broadway), Eva Le Gallienne (“She was a stone against which I could rub my talent and feel that it became sharper”), Maureen Stapleton, Julie Harris, Bette Davis, Katherine Hepburn, Elia Kazan, Marlon Brando, John Gielgud, and many more. Follies of God provides dazzling insight into how Williams conjured the dramatic characters and plays that so transformed American theater.
