Just another day in the life of our favorite chaos-magnet. Frankie's idea of a getaway? Fleeing to the realm of the Werealls before her newfound shifter blood turns her into the world's snarkiest cat. But hey, at least it's not a theme park. With a dead witch on her conscience (but not on her rap sheet, thank you very much) and Officer Buzzkill hot on her tail—literally—Frankie's got more problems than a long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs. Nana Peg says run. The magical po-po says freeze. And Frankie? She's just trying not to hack up a furball while clearing her name. The mission: Dodge the cops, unmask the real killer, and avoid turning into Garfield's sassy cousin. All while outrunning the curse of the blue moon. No pressure, right? Will Frankie solve the murder mystery and keep her whiskers clean? Or is she destined for a life of litter boxes and laser pointers? Strap in, sugar. Normal's not in Frankie's vocabulary, and she's about to give 'cat and mouse' a whole new meaning. If you love a paranormal cozy series with a kick ass witch who can take care of business even without her magic, then welcome to the Marina Witches Mysteries. Perfect for fans of Misty Bane, Amanda M. Lee, and Lily Harper Hart, as well as Dionne Lister, Morgana Best, and Jane Hinchey. Join Frankie and Dex as they take on dark forces and injustice along with Frankie's hot, but equally mysterious, neighbor. With Zane around, the main danger is to Frankie's heart.

Just another school year for our favorite delinquent witch. Frankie doesn't do higher education. Not when it involves being stuck at Aunt Betty's charm school for magical misfits. Who needs good grades when you've got sass to spare? Just as she's settling into her role as Hoodoo House's resident troublemaker (detention? More like a badge of honor), someone adds "attempted murder" to the curriculum. Talk about a pop quiz from hell. With classes suspended and a killer on the loose, Frankie's trading lessons for a chance at sweet, sweet vengeance. Because if this is the same creep who offed her mom? Let's just say detention will be the least of their worries. Homework: Unmask the murderer, save Aunt Betty, and maybe squeeze in a wedding dress fitting. You know, if there's time between magical mayhem and mortal peril. Will Frankie crack the case and make it to the altar? Or is she about to become the latest dropout in a very permanent way? Say "I do" to chaos, buttercup, because normal's for bridesmaids, and Frankie's about to take this magical matchup to a whole new level. Frankie thought vanquishing a spectral captain would cut her a break. She thought wrong. Now she's juggling a potentially fatal blood curse, hunting her mother's killer, and dealing with a father who's pulled a Lazarus act. Oh, and Grandma? The ex-pirate's stirred up a hurricane of trouble, because of course she has. Meanwhile, Frankie's new magical mojo is as reliable as a drunk fortune teller—sometimes explosive, often MIA. But with fists of fury and a smart-mouthed familiar at her side, she's ready to smash through any obstacle. Training with Zane, the supernaturally hot warlock-merman hybrid, doesn't help her focus. Especially when their combined power threatens to rewrite reality itself. Will Frankie crack the hex, unmask a murderer, and untangle her family tree? Or will she flame out in a blaze of chaotic magic? One thing's certain: Normal is off the table, and Frankie's just fine with that. Everything, apparently. With her own relatives either MIA or certified jerks, Frankie dives headfirst into the Zilonka family festivities. Sure, they're bloodsuckers, but how bad could it be? Spoiler alert: Think "The Addams Family" meets "The Hunger Games." Oh, and her merman hottie Zane? He's persona non grata thanks to some ancient feud. Unless... a little magical makeover is in order. What's the worst that could happen? (Don't answer that.) Throw in a pilfered relic, Frankie's ever-evolving powers threatening to go supernova, and a vampire who's too gorgeous for anyone's good, and you've got a recipe for holiday chaos. Will Frankie survive the family dinner from hell, keep Zane's true identity under wraps, and master her rebellious magic? Or will this be her last Winter Solstice hurrah? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Will Friedwald’s illuminating, opinionated essays—provocative, funny, and personal—on the lives and careers of more than three hundred singers anatomize the work of the most important jazz and popular performers of the twentieth century. From giants like Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Frank Sinatra, and Judy Garland to lesser-known artists like Jeri Southern and Joe Mooney, they have created a body of work that continues to please and inspire. Here is the most extensive biographical and critical survey of these singers ever written, as well as an essential guide to the Great American Songbook and those who shaped the way it has been sung. The music crosses from jazz to pop and back again, from the songs of Irving Berlin and W. C. Handy through Stephen Sondheim and beyond, bringing together straightforward jazz and pop singers (Billie Holiday, Perry Como); hybrid artists who moved among genres and combined them (Peggy Lee, Mel Tormé); the leading men and women of Broadway and Hollywood (Ethel Merman, Al Jolson); yesterday’s vaudeville and radio stars (Sophie Tucker, Eddie Cantor); and today’s cabaret artists and hit-makers (Diana Krall, Michael Bublé). Friedwald has also written extended pieces on the most representative artists of five significant genres that lie outside the songbook: Bessie Smith (blues), Mahalia Jackson (gospel), Hank Williams (country and western), Elvis Presley (rock ’n’ roll), and Bob Dylan (folk-rock). Friedwald reconsiders the personal stories and professional successes and failures of all these artists, their songs, and their performances, appraising both the singers and their music by balancing his opinions with those of fellow musicians, listeners, and critics. This magisterial reference book—ten years in the making—will delight and inform anyone with a passion for the iconic music of America, which continues to resonate throughout our popular culture.

From justice spells to protective charms, Frankie Castanea brings their fresh style to an ancient practice, showing that contemporary witchcraft is a powerful force for good and a tool for manifesting positive change. Modern-day witches are a blend of the old and the new. They travel to the grocery store, work nine-to-five jobs, and teach in our classrooms. They also carry black tourmaline and quartz, and wave bay and rosemary bundles over their doorways. Within an ancient and sacred practice, a new type of Craft has taken hold: one that combines the power of action with energy and intent, prioritizes self-realization, and matches its activism with manifestation. With chapters on meditation, grounding, cleansing, banishing, binding, and more, Spells for Change will help the modern witch create change within the hearth, the heart, and the world—one spell at a time.

A debut novel for fans of The Fault in Our Stars that thoughtfully and humorously depicts teen Ricky Bloom's struggles with a recent chronic illness diagnosis. "Silverstein sheds a powerful light on disease and how managing it can bring out one’s inner warrior. A blistering coming-of-age tale that will propel readers into Ricky’s corner." -Booklist As if her parents' divorce and sister's departure for college weren't bad enough, fourteen-year-old Ricky Bloom has just been diagnosed with a life-changing chronic illness. Her days consist of cursing everyone out, skipping school--which has become a nightmare--daydreaming about her crush, Julio, and trying to keep her parents from realizing just how bad things are. But she can't keep her ruse up forever. Ricky's afraid, angry, alone, and one suspension away from repeating ninth grade when she realizes: she can't be held back. She'll do whatever it takes to move forward--even if it means changing the person she's become. Lured out of her funk by a quirky classmate, Oliver, who's been there too, Ricky's porcupine exterior begins to shed some spines. Maybe asking for help isn't the worst thing in the world. Maybe accepting circumstances doesn't mean giving up.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Complementing Science-Fiction: The Early Years, which surveys science-fiction published in book form from its beginnings through 1930, the present volume covers all the science-fiction printed in the genre magazines--Amazing, Astounding, and Wonder, along with offshoots and minor magazines--from 1926 through 1936. This is the first time this historically important literary phenomenon, which stands behind the enormous modern development of science-fiction, has been studied thoroughly and accurately. The heart of the book is a series of descriptions of all 1,835 stories published during this period, plus bibliographic information. Supplementing this are many useful features: detailed histories of each of the magazines, an issue by issue roster of contents, a technical analysis of the art work, brief authors' biographies, poetry and letter indexes, a theme and motif index of approximately 30,0000 entries, and general indexes. Science-Fiction: The Gernsback Years is not only indispensable for reference librarians, collectors, readers, and scholars interested in science-fiction, it is also of importance to the study of popular culture during the Great Depression in the United States. Most of its data, which are largely based on rare and almost unobtainable sources, are not available elsewhere.
