Book excerpt: Robert Frank turned to filmmaking at the end of the 1950s. Although he has made 27 films, the work is largely a wellkept secret. Frank approaches each film project as a new experience, challenging the medium and its possibilities atevery turn. He has amalgamated documentary, fiction, and autobiography, cutting across genres. This book offers a visually unique approach to Frank¿s films: only new stills taken from videotapes have been used and they add up to a visual essay on Frank¿s cinema that establishes an engaging dialogue with his photographic work. Each film is introduced with detailed analysis, discussing the history and the aesthetics of Frank¿s film work. An interview with Allen Ginsberg provides an insider view. Together the texts and images offer an innovative and in-depth approach to the oeuvre of one of the greatest and most restless artists of the 20th century. Robert Frank was born in Zurich, Switzerland in 1924 and went to the United States in 1947. He is best known for his seminal book The Americans (1958), which gave rise to a distinct new art form in the photo-book, and his experimental film Pull My Daisy (1959) both reproduced by Steidl within The Robert Frank Project.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Leo Frank case of 1913 was one of the most sensational trials of the early twentieth century, capturing international attention. Frank, a northern Jewish factory supervisor in Atlanta, was convicted for the murder of Mary Phagan, a young laborer native to the South, largely on the perjured testimony of an African American janitor. The trial was both a murder mystery and a courtroom drama marked by lurid sexual speculation and overt racism. The subsequent lynching of Frank in 1915 by an angry mob only made the story more irresistible to historians, playwrights, novelists, musicians, and filmmakers for decades to come. Matthew H. Bernstein is the first scholar to examine the feature films and television programs produced in response to the trial and lynching of Leo Frank. He considers the four major surviving American texts: Oscar Micheaux's film Murder in Harlem (1936), Mervyn LeRoy's film They Won't Forget (1937), the Profiles in Courage television episode "John M. Slaton" (1964), and the two-part NBC miniseries The Murder of Mary Phagan (1988). Bernstein explains that complex issues like racism, anti-Semitism, class resentment, and sectionalism were at once irresistibly compelling and painfully difficult to portray in the mass media. Exploring the cultural and industrial contexts in which the works were produced, Bernstein considers how they succeeded or failed in representing the case's many facets. Film and television shows can provide worthy interpretations of history, Bernstein argues, even when they depart from the historical record. Screening a Lynching is an engrossing meditation on how film and television represented a traumatic and tragic episode in American history-one that continues to fascinate people to this day.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Federico Fellini's distinct style delighted generations of film viewers and inspired filmmakers and artists around the world. In Fellini's Films and Commercials, renowned Fellini scholar Frank Burke presents a film-by-film analysis of the famed director's cinematic output from a theoretical perspective. He explores Fellini's movement from relatively classic filmmaking to modernist reflexivity, and then to "postmodern reproduction." Burke moves from analysis of stories told from a relatively "objective" standpoint, to increased concentration on Fellini-as-author and on the cinematic apparatus, to Fellini's dismantling of authorship and the cinematic apparatus, to his postmodern signifying strategies. Grounded in poststructuralist approaches to texts and signification, Burke shows that Fellini is profoundly readable, if extremely complex. Revisiting Burke's 1996 monograph, this revised and updated edition includes a new preface and an additional chapter on the filmmaker's work on commercials. Elegantly written and thoroughly researched, this book is essential reading for any Fellini fan or scholar.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Holocaust movies have become an important segment of world cinema and the de-facto Holocaust education for many. One quarter of all American-produced Holocaust-related feature films have won or been nominated for at least one Oscar. In fact, from 1945 through 1991, half of all American Holocaust features were nominated. Yet most Holocaust movies have fallen through the cracks and few have been commercially successful. This book explores these trends--and many others--with a comprehensive guide to hundreds of films and made-for-television movies. From Anne Frank to Schindler's List to Jojo Rabbit, more than 400 films are examined from a range of perspectives--historical, chronological, thematic, sociological, geographical and individual. The filmmakers are contextualized, including Charlie Chaplin, Sidney Lumet, Steven Spielberg, Quentin Tarantino and Roman Polanski. Recommendations and reviews of the 50 best Holocaust films are included, along with an educational guide, a detailed listing of all films covered and a four-part index-glossary.

Book excerpt: This is the unconventional catalogue of the exhibition "Robert Frank, Books and Films, 1947-2016" a special edition of the German newspaper the Süddeutsche Zeitung following its original design and format, and printed on newsprint. Conceived by Robert Frank and Gerhard Steidl, the exhibition presents Frank's iconic images in the context of his life, creative processes, and wider cultural history. Here Frank's books and films are seen against the backdrop of his photographs, which are presented in an immediate and straightforward way: printed on up to three-meter-long sheets of newsprint and installed directly onto the wall, without frames. The newspaper catalogue recreates the raw, innovative approach of the exhibition. Featuring interviews, essays, letters and opinion pieces alongside rich picture sequences, Robert Frank, Books and Films, 1947-2016 is an unpretentious and accessible printed object or in Frank's own words: "Cheap, quick and dirty, that's how I like it!" Exhibition: Kunsthalle Ziegelhütte, Appenzell, Switzerland (15.5.-30.10.2016), Tokyo Art University, Japan, (11.2016), and fifty more to follow in 2016/17.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photographer, filmmaker, writer, adventurer. Controversial, passionate, audacious. Frank Hurley was an extraordinary Australian, possibly most famous for his Antarctic photographs captured alongside expeditioners Sir Douglas Mawson and Sir Ernest Shackleton. From the early twentieth century until his death in 1962 Hurley created a stunning visual archive that chronicled the major events of the twentieth century, and Australia's achievements both home and overseas. This book and the Hurley Collection in the National Library of Australia make clear this outstanding contribution and the lengths to which the man would go in order to convey the gravity of events. For Hurley, image-making and exploration went hand-in-hand and he sought out experiences as a pioneer documentary film-maker, official photographer in two world wars, early aviator, and adventure and story-seeker in both the natural environment and in rapidly disappearing non-western worlds. In this readable, definitive and wonderfully illustrated re-issued biography, Alasdair McGregor describes Hurley's life and character in all its richness.
