Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First edition, one of 26 lettered copies bound thus and with colophon signed by the authors. Frank E. Schoonover (1877-1972) is recognized as one of the foremost and prolific illustrators of his time. His contribution to American illustration spanned over 40 years and included more than 2200 illustrations. His work appeared in most of the popular periodicals in the first half of the twentieth century, including Harpers, Scribner's, Saturday Evening Post American Boy, Country Gentleman and Colliers, as well as in over 150 books, particularly children's classics and contemporary fiction by such authors as Jack London, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Clarence Mulford, Lucy Foster Madison, James Willard Schultz and Zane Grey. His iconic images of Hopalong Cassidy, Blackbeard, Jean LaFitte, Jim Bridger, Robinson Crusoe, Hans Brinker, Gulliver, Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, and Joan of Arc remain a testimony of his creative, artistic ability.Born in Oxford, New Jersey in 1877, Schoonover eventually attended Drexel Institute in Philadelphia where he was taught by the quintessential American illustrator, Howard Pyle. Also, the young artist was chosen to attend Pyle's summer school in Chadds Ford. With Pyle's help, Schoonover initiated his illustrative career in 1899 with four en grisaille oil paintings for the book, Jersey Boy in the Revolution. He numbered them #1-4 as he began recording his works in the remarkable daybooks, a chronological, detailed account that he maintained for his entire career. The artist traveled widely in the United States and Canada giving him a unique perspective and a rich reservoir of experiences, which he incorporated into many works. He subsequently became recognized as the expert on the indigenous tribes of the Hudson Bay area. When the popularity of illustration waned in the 1940s, Schoonover turned to landscapes and commissioned works including designs for magnificent stained glass windows. He was also a sought-after, accomplished art teacher for twenty-five years.

Book excerpt: Joan of Arc By Lucy Foster Madison In presenting this story for the young the writer has endeavored to give a vivid and accurate life of Jeanne D'Arc (Joan of Arc) as simply told as possible. There has been no pretence toward keeping to the speech of the Fifteenth Century, which is too archaic to be rendered literally for young readers, although for the most part the words of the Maid have been given verbatim.

Book Synopsis Frank Schoonover, Illustrator of the North American Frontier by : Frank E. Schoonover

This book was released on 1976 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frank Schooner, one of the giants of the Golden Age of American Illustration, was renowned for his scenes of life on the western frontier of America and Canada. Schoonover captured the flavor of the west and northwest in his dramatic outdoor compositions which depicted cowboys, Indians, trappers, Eskimos - the people and way of life that he knew, loved, and painted first hand. His keen sense of observations, coupled with his vivid documentary style, made his illustrations powerful paintings in themselves. They are now exhibited and collected for their own sake, independent of the books they illustrated, as unforgettable documents of a legendary way of life. Like the other great painter/illustrators of the Brandywine School -he was a student of Howard Pyle and a contemporary of such notables as N. C. Wyeth and Harvey Dunn - Schoonover was passionate about the portrayal of the American past. Although he lived most of his life in the Brandywine River area of Pennsylvania and Delaware, his commitment to the frontier dominated his work. A natural love for adventure and a yearning to find his own style sent him initially to the Canadian northwest, where he took naturally to the challenge of frontier life. Living among the Indians, canoeing, traveling by dogsled, and fending for himself brought authentic flavor to his paintings which illustrated many popular books and stories of adventure - most of which are now forgotten, although the paintings endure. This handsome collection is the first full-scale illustrated study of Schoonover's work, not only rediscovering the paintings of a major artist, but providing an important visual document of frontier life.--From jacket flap.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Blackbeard: Buccaneer By Ralph Delahaye Paine He differed from some of his neighbors in that he abominated pirates and would have given them short shift. A trifle near-sighted, he was quite close to the tavern before he espied his own nephew and ward, Jack Cockrell, in this shameful company of roisterers. The august uncle blinked, opened his mouth, and turned as red as a lobster. Indignation choked his speech. For his part, Jack stood dumfounded and quaking, the picture of a coward with a guilty conscience. He would have tried to steal from sight but it was too late.

Download or read book Enduring Ideals written by James Kimble and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2018-05-29 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enduring Ideals: Rockwell, Roosevelt & the Four Freedoms is the catalog for the first comprehensive traveling exhibition devoted to Norman Rockwell's iconic depictions of FDR's Four Freedoms. Enduring Ideals illuminates both the historic context in which FDR articulated the Four Freedoms—Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Worship, Freedom from Want, and Freedom from Fear—and the role of Rockwell’s paintings in bringing them to life for millions of people, rallying the public behind the War effort and changing the tenor of the times. In telling the story of how Rockwell’s works were transformed from a series of paintings into a national movement, the exhibition also demonstrates the power of illustration to communicate ideas and inspire change. In addition to his celebrated paintings of the Four Freedoms, the exhibition brings together numerous other examples of painting, illustration, and more, by both Rockwell and a broad range of his contemporaries—from J.C. Leyendecker and Mead Schaeffer, to Ben Shahn, Dorothea Lange, and Gordon Parks, among others—as well as historical documents, photographs, videos, and artifacts; interactive digital displays; and immersive settings. While exploring the response of an earlier generation to the plea for defense of universal freedoms, the exhibition also resonates with our own time. The catalogue features essays by exhibition co-curators Stephanie Haboush Plunkett and James Kimble, by Laurie Norton Moffat, Director of the Norman Rockwell Museum, and by other contributors, including activist Ruby Bridges, artist and granddaughter of Norman Rockwell, Daisy Rockwell, and Ambassador William Vanden Heuvel.
