Book excerpt: The distinctive iconography of François-Marie Banier's latest body of work, Never stop dancing, stems from his unconditional interest in every single subject. Predominantly shot in Paris, New York, Brazil and Africa within the last couple of years, this book celebrates the good old days of analogue photography as much as human beings in all their diversity. Banier's dictum that "everybody is a piece of art" has materialized in this volume glooming in neatly printed black and white. François-Marie Banier was born in Paris in 1947. A novelist and playwright, he has also been taking photographs of public figures and anonymous people in the street since the 1970s. In 1991, the Centre Pompidou in Paris exhibited his photographic works for the first time, and further exhibitions have since been organized throughout Europe, in Asia and in America. The Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris presented a retrospective in 2003, exhibiting his "written" and "painted" photographs for the first time. He lives and works in Paris.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Duane Michals (born 1932) was seventy when, soon after the death of his mother, he returned to his native Pittsburgh to revisit the house in which he was born and brought up. Its deteriorated state proved a poignant focus for his memories, prompting reveries on mortality and the succession of generations that found form as a sequence of photographs and poetic texts. In The House I Once Called Home, the interaction of words and images provides a sensitive and moving account of one man's journey through life. Michals creates a highly affecting layering of time by superimposing new photographs onto much older images taken in the same location during his earlier life there. Michals is one of America's most consistently individual and original voices in photography. He rejected the documentary emphasis of much of the work that preceded him, instead using the camera to explore the workings of the mind. Michals sought to overcome what he deemed to be the limitations of the single photographic image, both by writing directly onto his prints and by creating narrative sequences of images; these innovative techniques proved immensely influential. Powerfully intimate in its focus, The House I Once Called Home demonstrates conclusively the possibility of exposing universal truths through the most personal events. It is a work to which every reader will be able to relate through the filter of his or her own experience, and which will undoubtedly accrue new meanings as we ourselves return to it at different stages in our lives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Artists such as Degas, Whistler, and Toulous-Lautrec reinterpreted the Ukiyo-e aesthetic, the popular genre of woodblock prints produced during the Japnaese Edo period's "floating world" of sophisticated, urban culture (c. 1620-1867). More than a century later, Duane Michals presents a modern and personal approach to this artistic tradition. Inspired by the work of Bonnard, Vasarely, Vermeer, and Vuillard, Michals's colour photographs fuse Eastern and Western influences to present scenarios that blur the boundaries between fantasy and reality, and explore the enigmatic, floating nature of contemporary life. Although he has previously used colour film for commercial projects, "Photographs from the Floating World" marks the first occasion that Michals has used colour in his personal work. Images from this series describe discrete moments with the powerful brevity of Japanese haiku: a flower blossoms, a woman waits for someone, a man builds a card house, a cat sees the ghost of his dead master.

Book excerpt: In today?s globalised world, terms such as multiculturalism and pluralism assume a shared culture with shared values and convictions about openness, democracy, and equality. This in turn can be seen as a monoculture of views and attitudes. Yet being able to deal with differences, paradoxes, and ambiguities results from a learning process and does not just happen on its own. Art has played a pivotal role in this process since the dawn of modernity, and artists in particular have the ability to play with cultural conventions. This book gives a platform to art and artists who dare to challenge the rules of our globalised, monocultural society, and explores their successes and failures.
