Book excerpt: Excerpt from France, the Apostle, and the Ethics of the War Among the many lectures and speeches which the author has delivered in Great Britain during the war, for the purpose of the war, he has chosen for publication the three which appear in this volume, first, for the sake of the honour done him by the Royal Institution in inviting him to address it, and, second, because the subject of these discourses is dealt with in as full and detailed a manner as the haste entailed by the duties and necessities of the time permitted. A certain discrepancy of tone and style will be perceived between the essays. It flows from the difference in their composition and delivery. All three were delivered extempore, but the first, France the Apostle, was spoken in French and afterwards written out in that language and revised by the author; it has now been translated into English in order to render it more generally accessible. On the other hand, the two lectures which make up the essay, The Ethics of the War, were spoken by the author in English and taken down by a stenographer; and the text so recorded was afterwards retouched and enlarged by the speaker. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early Christian Attitude to War: A Contribution to the History of Christian Ethics Here, then, is a subject on which we need clear light, and this excellent piece of research certainly brings considerable illumination; it is a subject that will not cease to vex the Church until we have decided either to make as unequivocal a condemnation of war as we have of slavery, or to abandon altogether any profession of whole-hearted allegiance to the Christian faith. Book excerpt: Excerpt from War, This War and the Sermon on the Mount Love your enemies, ' verily and indeed - but it is also written, thou shalt love thy neighbour.' Take as literally as you like the words, If a man smite thee on the right cheek, turn to him the other also - yet there is one thing they cannot mean If a man smite thy sister on the cheek look the other way.' If a wanton injury is threatened to one weaker than myself and I have power to prevent that injury, then, if I fail to exercise that power, I become morally a particeps criminis, and no casuistry can absolve me from complicity in the injury itself. No act is more essentially Christlike than the deliverance of the oppressed. Even if in a particular case the threatened party would be willing in the name of Christ to submit to the injury, it is no whit less my duty to prevent the wrong being done - if possible by persuasion, if not by force. The knight-errant riding the world in search of distressed damsels to succour is as good a Christian as the Quaker literally turning the other cheek. If possible by persuasion, if not by force I have written, but it is just to the addition of the words by force that many thoughtful men, Christian and other wise, will demur. Can force ever, it is asked, prevent wrong And, if so, under what circumstances and with what limitations? On the answer to this depends the answer to the further question whether a Christian can ever justify war. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sword of Christ and the World War The World War has forced many new, pressing, and perplexing problems upon the preacher. To him has been intrusted the gospel of reconciliation, of peace and good will to men, and how to preach that gospel in a world of war when nation is divided against nation and a man's foes are found even in his own national household, is by no means easy for him to determine. He may be successful in evading or ignoring the problems of the higher criticism and the doctrine of evolution; but war, with its terrible, insistent, and heart-searching questions, is a brutal, stubborn fact that must be met and answered. Let it be granted that the preacher has fallen upon difficult days. New questions which go to the very core of religion and ethics are hurled at him. A hundred new demands are being made upon his time, and when he is asked to give up his service for the advertising of liberty loans or for a discus sion of the problems of food conservation, he is sometimes in doubt as to whether the calls of coun try are the calls of God. This book, in part, is based upon addresses given by the writer to members of his congregation and other audiences, on some of the questions raised by the war. The material, however, has been revised and rearranged, and four of the eight chapters are new. It is an attempt to interpret the gospel and the duties of Christian citizenship in an age of to the people who wait upon our ministry. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ethical and Religious Problems of the War: Fourteen Addresses The war in which Great Britain is now engaged has many aspects, and springs out of a long historical development. With its manifold antecedents the Addresses in this volume are not concerned, nor do they attempt to deal with the various problems, social, economic, industrial, international, which must more and more engage the thoughts of all who look forward to its close. But this great tragedy involves many minds in grievous perplexity. Not only has it overthrown the hopes for the securer establishment of peace among the leading European nations which had been steadily growing since the first Hague Conference in 1899, it has shaken the fundamental convictions of the righteous order of the world, and the significance of the whole evolution of humanity upon this globe. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Victorious Faith: Moral Ideals in War Time This book is issued with the conviction that we may well give less attention to war as an external enterprise and regard it in the light of its bearings on the whole life of man. For man the individual no doubt bears relation to the nations in their throes and successes, and there must be values of great moment on the inner or human side of the events which war has forced upon our attention. Furthermore, both men and nations do under pressure, in times of stress and peril, what they apparently cannot aecom plish in times of peace. The war has been uncommonly fruitful in this respect. It has brought us even amidst the uncertainties and the miseries new evidences of moral and spiritual faith. The same facts which at first baffled us have proved illuminating in so far as we have gained the inner point of view. What we now need is a yet greater impetus to gather up the human lessons and learn their bearings on the things of the spirit. Book excerpt: A page-turning novel that is also an exploration of the great philosophical concepts of Western thought, Jostein Gaarder's Sophie's World has fired the imagination of readers all over the world, with more than twenty million copies in print. One day fourteen-year-old Sophie Amundsen comes home from school to find in her mailbox two notes, with one question on each: "Who are you?" and "Where does the world come from?" From that irresistible beginning, Sophie becomes obsessed with questions that take her far beyond what she knows of her Norwegian village. Through those letters, she enrolls in a kind of correspondence course, covering Socrates to Sartre, with a mysterious philosopher, while receiving letters addressed to another girl. Who is Hilde? And why does her mail keep turning up? To unravel this riddle, Sophie must use the philosophy she is learning—but the truth turns out to be far more complicated than she could have imagined.
