Book excerpt: In an era of rapid technological advancements, blockchain technology has emerged as a groundbreaking solution for decentralized trust and immutable record-keeping. Frameworks for Blockchain Standards, Tools, Testbeds, and Platforms delves into the intricate world of blockchain, offering a comprehensive exploration of its various dimensions. At its core, blockchain disrupts the traditional notion of a centralized trusted authority, instead relying on multiple sources of trust and algorithmic consensus for validation. This handbook elucidates the transformative power of blockchain, examining its capacity to offer enduring records that resist modification by trusted or untrusted sources. The concept of mining, akin to decentralized peer review, is demystified in the context of the Bitcoin protocol, which paved the way for subsequent advancements like Ethereum—a decentralized, open-source platform enabling a diverse array of blockchain applications. This book serves as an indispensable guide for various stakeholders, including researchers, academicians, industry practitioners, policy makers, corporate executives, venture capitalists, and entrepreneurs. With its inclusive approach, the book also benefits those indirectly involved in blockchain and its applications. It is equally valuable for undergraduate, graduate, and research-level students seeking to explore the transformative potential of blockchain technology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although initially introduced to support the Bitcoin cryptocurrency, many blockchain technologyapplications have been envisioned. As a result, blockchain platforms have been created and others are underdevelopment. The Department of Defense (DoD) needs blockchain platform testbeds so that applicationsbeyond cryptocurrency can be explored. To solve this problem, we decided to construct a small blockchaintestbed. We developed criteria to aid in selecting a blockchain platform for use in a testbed. Then, weevaluated a set of blockchain platforms against our criteria, selected the highest-ranking platform, and usedit to create the testbed. We installed and exercised applications provided by the platform's developers to testits behavior. Study of the services provided by the platform allowed us to propose the design of anapplication that could be tailored for DoD use. The selected blockchain platform, Hyperledger Fabric, washosted in lightweight virtual machines called Docker containers and can be used for design andexperimentation on applications and blockchain networks. This lowered the effort and resources required toconfigure and set up blockchain networks. Hyperledger Fabric is an example of a blockchain platform thatcan support more use cases beyond cryptocurrency

Book excerpt: As the concept of the visible product lifecycle and product tracking becomes important to consumers, emerging technologies such as Internet of Things (IoT)-based networks and Blockchain platforms are considered promising solutions by Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to increase their brand reputation, improve their consumers' experiences, and reduce their operational costs. However, costly implementation, data verification issues, and the risk of uploading inaccurate information on those platforms have limited the adoption rate and capabilities offered by the aforementioned technologies. Companies often face the question of what type of distributed ledger technology and verification protocol is more efficient in terms of operational costs as well as security. The purpose of this study is to develop an optimization framework to make a trade-off between the cost of implementation of the technology and the security level. The framework is developed based on utility theory principles. The main focus is to discuss the cost associated with various aspects of technology implementation. Finally, this general cost framework is shown as a demo for an example of the food supply chain.

Book excerpt: This book addresses what software architects and developers need to know in order to build applications based on blockchain technology, by offering an architectural view of software systems that make beneficial use of blockchains. It provides guidance on assessing the suitability of blockchain, on the roles blockchain can play in an architecture, on designing blockchain applications, and on assessing different architecture designs and tradeoffs. It also serves as a reference on blockchain design patterns and design analysis, and refers to practical examples of blockchain-based applications. The book is divided into four parts: Part I provides a general introduction to the topic and to existing blockchain platforms including Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Hyperledger Fabric, and offers examples of blockchain-based applications. Part II focuses on the functional aspects of software architecture, describing the main roles blockchain can play in an architecture, as well as its potential suitability and design process. It includes a catalogue of 15 design patterns and details how to use model-driven engineering to build blockchain-based applications. Part III covers the non-functional aspects of blockchain applications, which are cross-cutting concerns including cost, performance, security, and availability. Part IV then presents three detailed real-world use cases, offering additional insights from a practical perspective. An epilogue summarizes the book and speculates on the role blockchain and its applications can play in the future. This book focusses on the bigger picture for blockchain, covering the concepts and technical considerations in the design of blockchain-based applications. The use of mathematical formulas is limited to where they are critical. This book is primarily intended for developers, software architects and chief information officers who need to understand the basic technology, tools and methodologies to build blockchain applications. It also provides students and researchers new to this field an introduction to this hot topic.
