Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fragrance of Emotions is a compilation of short stories that will show a roller coaster of emotions. In our daily lives, we may feel happy, sad, angry, or vengeful towards our lives, and we think that we have the most terrible life story ever written to the point that we would consider ending our lives. Little did we know, there were more people that were more unfortunate than us but still fighting for their lives. I am not saying to invalidate our feelings just because there are people who are living a more terrible life. I am suggesting that we try to embrace what we feel, rest, and then stand up and continue to fight and remember that blank page on the back of the book for you to write your own story or your own little ending that you wanted. Fragrance of Emotions is just a simple compilation of short stories, but we never know, you might find the answer to your questions while reading.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE SENSE OF SMELL The nose is normally mistakenly assumed to be the organ of smell reception. It is not. The primary function of the nose is to regulate the temperature and humidity of inspired air, thereby protecting the delicate linings of the lungs. This is achieved by the breathed air passing through narrow passageways formed by three nasal turbinates in each nostril. The turbinates are covered by spongy vascular cells which can expand or contract to open or close the nasal pathways. The olfactory receptors, innervated by the 1st cranial nerve, are located at the top of the nose. There are about 50 million smell receptors in the human olfactory epithelia, the total size of which, in humans, is about that of a small postage stamp, with half being at the top of the left and half at the top of the right nostril. The receptive surfaces of olfactory cells are ciliated and extend into a covering layer of mucus. There is a constant turnover of olfactory cells. Their average active life has been estimated to be about 28 days.

Book excerpt: Scientists and researchers generally agree that smell was the first of the five senses that humans developed. And yet, day to day, we pay little attention to how our sense of smell works and don't really understand how it is so intimately connected to our experience of the world around us. Written by Christopher Brosius, founder of Demeter Fragrance Library, this book will explore the intersection between scent, science and psychology, in an attempt to unravel the mystery surrounding our most neglected sense. The topics covered include: How do we recognize smells? How do we store memories of scents? Why do we find some smells appealing and others not? How do we explain why scents are closely linked to emotions? The book will also examine the ways that scent fits into people's lives. Brosius uses a combination of scientific research and engaging anecdotal information to make the text lively and easily accessible to even the science-impaired.The scents included will be printed on microencapsulated stickers, applied to individual cards, and packaged within a pocket in the front and back endsheet of the book. Each scent card will include a name, color, and the scent. The scent illustrat

What if new evidence showed that the sixth sense wasn't so inexplicable after all?Pheromones--a form of chemical communication--have been long known to exist in the animal kingdom, and are one of the strongest forces guiding behavior. Only recently has science discovered the importance of human pheromones, silent messengers providing unconscious clues about the people we come in contact with--from information about our heredity and temperament to our sexual availability. Now, a team of leading pheromone researchers and scientific journalists reveal the primal secrets of our "sixth sense"--how and why it evolved, its effect on our daily lives, and its possible uses in altering mood and behavior. This entertaining book will help you understand your own senses, your reactions to everyday situations, and how to harness the power of this sense to fulfill your total potential.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A book such as this one necessarily entails the effort of many individuals. Its first seed was a workshop in 1988 that one of us (K. L. C. ) designed and directed at the City University of New York Graduate Center as part of a series of conferences and workshops on topics in neuropsychology spon sored by the Institute for Research in Behavioral Neuroscience (IRBN). At that time, studies in the efficacy of olfaction as an alternative modality of stimulation in brain-injured adults were taking place at IRBN. The work shop helped to spark many new ideas among IRBN's staff, leading to various projects in clinical intervention, some of which are discussed in this volume. We soon discovered that clinical interest in olfaction was steadily increasing, and that this modality was in many ways on a par with the rest. Along with progress in the clinical investigation of olfaction, an abundance of work has been published in the basic science of the field. Ideas such as the regeneration of olfactory neurons and the use of these neurons in trans plantation took hold and were proved to be viable ones. These develop ments along with a profusion of techniques that allow a closer look at the anatomy and physiology of olfaction, have contributed to the accelerated pace with which this field is now advancing. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An intimate exploration of inspiration and creativity, from the "parfumeur exclusif" of the house of Hermès. A scent has incantatory powers, capable of transporting you to your past, of kindling fantasies, of creating a vivid mise en scène—literally out of thin air. In the hands of the truly great, perfume creation is a kind of alchemy. Where does inspiration for this visceral art come from? How does one capture the essence of emotions, of desire? Jean-Claude Ellena has a sublime gift. As "parfumeur exclusif" (or "the nose") for Hermès, he elevates fragrance to an art form. A "writer of perfume," his concoctions are as finely composed and evocative as a haiku. He is also a conjurer of sorts: "I create an illusion that is actually stronger than reality . . . you enter the scent and follow the path." The Diary of a Nose is a collection of Ellena’s meditations on the world of scents, and what stirs his creation of some of the world’s most desired fragrances. Inspiration can come from anywhere—a market stall, a landscape, or even the movement of calligraphy. Though each smell has its own distinct character, a gifted perfumer creates olfactory experiences that are intensely personal and unique, that blossom on the body and leave a trace of us lingering after we have left a room. Seductive, delicate, and elegant as any of Ellena’s creations, The Diary of a Nose seeks to capture the most elusive facets of this rarefied and mysterious art.

Book excerpt: Shakespeare wrote that a rose by any other name would smell as sweet. But if you cannot smell, does the rose lose its sweetness? The first and definitive book on the psychology of smell, The Scent of Desire traces the importance of smell in our lives, from nourishment to procreation to our relationships with the people closest to us and the world at large. Smell was the very first sense to evolve and is located in the same part of the brain that processes emotion, memory, and motivation. To our ancestors, the sense of smell wasn't just important, it was crucial to existence and it remains so today. Our emotional, physical, even sexual lives are profoundly shaped by both our reactions to and interpretations of different smells. Why do some people like a certain smell and others hate it? Is smell personal or cultural? How does smell affect our choices and our daily lives? Rachel Herz explores these questions and examines the role smell plays in our lives, and how this most essential of senses is imperative to our physical and emotional well-being. Herz investigates how our sense of smell functions, examines what purpose it serves, and shows how inextricably it is linked to our survival. She introduces us to people who have lost their ability to smell and shows how their experiences confirm this sense's importance by illuminating the traumatic effect its loss has on the quality of day-to-day living. Herz illustrates how profoundly scent and the sense of smell affect our daily lives with numerous examples and personal accounts based on her years of research. The wonders of our sense of smell are all explored in a compelling and engaging manner, from emotions and memory to aromatherapy and pheromones. For anyone who has ever wondered about human nature or been curious about the secrets of both the body and the mind, The Scent of Desire is a fascinating, down-to-earth tour of the psychology and biology of our most neglected sense, the sense of smell.
