Book excerpt: This report describes the results of an experimental test program to investigate the influence of specimen sidegrooving on the cleavage fracture toughness of A533B-1 steel. The work represents a companion study to a previous investigation into the effects of specimen size on the cleavage fracture toughness of the same A533B-1 plate material.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results of an experimental test program to investigate methods of predicting the influence of specimen size on the cleavage fracture toughness of A533B-1 steel are presented. Three-point bend specimens from 10 to 230-mm thick were tested; to minimize scatter in the results, these were all extracted from a single plate of A533B, such that their crack tips lay on the midplane of the plate. A total of 217 tests were performed so that enough data could be obtained to allow statistical analysis.

This book was released on 2003 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past 18 months, a large data set has been developed on an A533B plate material removed from the decommissioned Shoreham nuclear power pressure vessel. The specimens in this data set were tested in the ductile-to-brittle transition regime using the procedures of the new ASTM Standard, Standard Test Method for Determination of Reference Temperature, T0for Ferritic Steels in the Transition Range (E 1921). Results presented earlier [1] showed that crack length ratio has a clear effect on the reference transition temperature, and also that SE(B) and C(T) specimens define clearly different reference temperatures for this material. The observation that the extent of plasticity had little effect on the observed specimen geometry shift led to an investigation of the elastic T-stress as a potential measure of constraint for these results. It was found that T0 did correlate well with the median T-stress [2] obtained from standard equations [3] for the sample geometries used.

Book Synopsis Dynamic Initiation Fracture Toughness of a Pressure Vessel Steel in the Transition Region by : SM. Graham
Download or read book Dynamic Initiation Fracture Toughness of a Pressure Vessel Steel in the Transition Region written by SM. Graham and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dynamic fracture toughness of an ASTM A533, Grade B steel plate was determined at several temperatures in the ductile-brittle transition region. Crack-tip loading rates ranged from approximately 103 to 105 MPa?m/s. The fracture toughness was shown to decrease with increased loading rate. The dynamic fracture toughness was compared with results from previous investigations and it was shown that the decrease in toughness due to increased loading rate at the highest test temperature was not as severe as reported in previous investigations. It was also shown that the reference temperature, T0, was a better index of the fracture toughness vs. temperature relationship than the nil-ductility temperature, RTNDT for this material.

Download or read book Fracture Toughness Measurements in the Transition Regime Using Small Size Samples written by R. Chaouadi and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present paper reports the treatment of fracture toughness data in the ductile-to-brittle transition regime by using Charpy size specimens. Size effect and statistical variation are taken into account according to a statistical model associated to the weakest link model. The methodology is first calibrated on a reference reactor pressure vessel material, for which fracture toughness data obtained on large samples are available. This methodology is successfully applied to a number of RPV steels to determine the fracture toughness behaviour in the transition regime. Monte Carlo simulations are performed to determine the confidence interval of the reference temperature as derived from a small number of tests.
