The aim of these reviews is to bring certain areas of corrosion science and technology into a sharp focus. The volumes of this series are published approximately on a yearly basis and each contains three to five reviews. The articles in each volume are sekcted in such a way as to be of interest both to the corrosion scientists and the corrosion technologists. There is, in fact, a particular aim in juxtaposing these interests because of the importance of mutual interaction and interdisciplinarity so important in corrosion studies. It is hoped that the corrosion scientists in this way may stay abreast of the activities in corrosion technology and vice versa. In this series the term "corrosion" is used in its very broadest sense. It includes, therefore, not only the degradation of metals in aqueous en vironment but also what is commonly referred to as "high-temperature oxidation." Further, the plan is to be even more general than these topics; the series will include all solids and all environments. Today, engineering solids include not only metals but glasses, ionic solids, polymeric solids, and composites of these. Environments of interest must be extended to liquid metals, a wide variety of gases, nonaqueous electrolytes, and other non aqueous liquids.

Fracture-toughness tests of 1-in. specimens of the 2020-T651, 2219-T851 and 7001-T75 were completed during the past quarter. The fracture toughness of 2020-T651 is lowest; those of 7001-T75 and 2024-T851 are higher but still about 20 per cent below that of 7075-T651 (from AF33(657)-11155). The fracture toughness of 2219-T851 is exceptionally high, equalling or exceeding that of 7075-T7351. Fatigue tests of center-notched specimens of 2020-T651 and 2219-T851 are complete. Cracks initiate in about the same number of cycles for 2219-T851 as for 2024-T851, and slightly sooner than in 2020-T651 and 7075-T651. Cracks propagate more slowly in 2219-T851 and 2020T651 than in some of the other alloys, but 2020-T651 fails at shorter crack lengths. Corrosion tests show that 2020-T651, 2024-T851 and 2219-T851 are highly resistant to exfoliation attack and to stress-corrosion cracking in any direction at stresses up to 75 per cent of the yield strength, similar to the case for 7075-T7351. Book excerpt: When an airframe component breaks suddenly, under conditions well within the design envelope, the occurrence is usually termed brittle fracture. This report uses an analytical scheme which combines data from several different sources in order to provide diagrams of fracture resistance versus thickness for a number of 'standard' yield strength levels. By using such diagrams, limited data on a new alloy or heat treatment may be compared, and the impact on designs where fracture resistance is important may be assessed. The data background employed in the analysis consisted of both iron- and aluminum-base airframe materials. However, this report focuses largely on the 7000-series aluminum alloys. Minimum expected behavior has been developed for this series of aluminum alloys by examining fracture toughness, yield strength, and thickness effect in accordance with the analytical scheme described.
