Book Synopsis The Point of Fracture by : Frank Turner Hollon
Download or read book The Point of Fracture written by Frank Turner Hollon and published by Anchor Canada. This book was released on 2010-08-27 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A troubled woman, bent on revenge, implicates her husband, his family, and a Southern community in an unsolvable murder. After nearly fifteen years in a childless marriage, Michael Brace and his beautiful wife, Suzanne, live separate lives under the same roof. Suzanne suffers crippling headaches and is haunted by childhood memories of her father, visions of violence, and the bloodlines of mental illness. Michael, meanwhile, sleeps on the couch, hiding in the shadows of his wealthy family and thinking about the novel he’s always wanted to write. In a tangled desire for revenge against her father, her husband, his family, and everything she cannot reconcile, Suzanne Brace sets in motion a patient, complicated plan of deception, sacrifice, and death. But as with all plans – even those executed to perfection – there are waves of fatal consequence. With spare prose and shrewd insight, Hollon explores the intertwined relationships of family and community in the face of an unthinkable crime, and illuminates the fine line between destruction and salvation.
Book Synopsis A Variational Approach to Fracture and Other Inelastic Phenomena by : Gianpietro Del Piero
Download or read book A Variational Approach to Fracture and Other Inelastic Phenomena written by Gianpietro Del Piero and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-08-30 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book exposes a number of mathematical models for fracture of growing difficulty. All models are treated in a unified way, based on incremental energy minimization. They differ from each other by the assumptions made on the inelastic part of the total energy, here called the "cohesive energy". Each model describes a specific aspect of material response, and particular care is devoted to underline the correspondence of each model to the experiments. The content of the book is a re-elaboration of the lectures delivered at the First Sperlonga Summer School on Mechanics and Engineering Sciences in September 2011. In the year and a half elapsed after the course, the material has been revised and enriched with new and partially unpublished results. Significant additions have been introduced in the occasion of the course "The variational approach to fracture and other inelastic phenomena", delivered at SISSA, Trieste, in March 2013. The Notes reflect a research line carried on by the writer over the years, addressed to a comprehensive description of the many aspects of the phenomenon of fracture, and to its relations with other phenomena, such as the formation of microstructure and the changes in the material’s strength induced by plasticity and damage. Reprinted from the Journal of Elasticity, volume 112, issue 1, 2013.
Book Synopsis Remediation Engineering by : Suthan S. Suthersan
Download or read book Remediation Engineering written by Suthan S. Suthersan and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1996-10-24 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In many cases, the application of in situ technologies evolved as a necessity from a cost perspective. However, the basic understanding of the mechanisms and theory behind these technologies was treated as a "black box." Although we have seen some tremendous successes in the application of remediation technologies over the past several years, we have also seen many cases in which a technology has been incorrectly or inappropriately applied. In most cases, this misapplication has been the result of a poor understanding of the basic concepts and mechanisms behind the technologies. Without proper understanding, the potential for misapplication of technologies remains a serious economic and technical threat.

The main object of the symposium was to make a general survey of recent developments in the research of constitutive relations in high and very high strain rates and related problems in high velocity solid mechanics, and to explore further new ideas for dealing with unresolved problems of a fundamental nature as well as of practical importance. The subjects covered theoretical, experimental, and numerical fields in the above-mentioned problems in solids, covering metals, polymers, ceramics, and composites. Emphasis was given to the following fields: 1. Material characterization of solids in high velocity deformation, experimental techniques, typical data obtained by these techniques, modeling, and constitutive relations 2. Strain rate dependent elasto-visco-plastic stress waves 3. Crack initiation, propagation, and dynamic fracture toughness 4. Dynamic stress concentration 5. Book Synopsis Troubleshooting Finite-Element Modeling with Abaqus by : Raphael Jean Boulbes
Download or read book Troubleshooting Finite-Element Modeling with Abaqus written by Raphael Jean Boulbes and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-09-06 with total page 453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives Abaqus users who make use of finite-element models in academic or practitioner-based research the in-depth program knowledge that allows them to debug a structural analysis model. The book provides many methods and guidelines for different analysis types and modes, that will help readers to solve problems that can arise with Abaqus if a structural model fails to converge to a solution. The use of Abaqus affords a general checklist approach to debugging analysis models, which can also be applied to structural analysis. The author uses step-by-step methods and detailed explanations of special features in order to identify the solutions to a variety of problems with finite-element models. The book promotes: • a diagnostic mode of thinking concerning error messages; • better material definition and the writing of user material subroutines; • work with the Abaqus mesher and best practice in doing so; • the writing of user element subroutines and contact features with convergence issues; and • consideration of hardware and software issues and a Windows HPC cluster solution. The methods and information provided facilitate job diagnostics and help to obtain converged solutions for finite-element models regarding structural component assemblies in static or dynamic analysis. The troubleshooting advice ensures that these solutions are both high-quality and cost-effective according to practical experience. The book offers an in-depth guide for students learning about Abaqus, as each problem and solution are complemented by examples and straightforward explanations. It is also useful for academics and structural engineers wishing to debug Abaqus models on the basis of error and warning messages that arise during finite-element modelling processing.
Book Synopsis Advances in Material Property Characterization using Small Punch Tests by : Bijan Kumar Dutta
Download or read book Advances in Material Property Characterization using Small Punch Tests written by Bijan Kumar Dutta and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2024-11-08 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The small punch test (SPT) is useful to calculate changes in the tensile and fracture properties of structural materials during the service life of the materials of plant components. This book compiles advances in the development of correlations to calculate mechanical properties of the materials using SPT data. New correlations have been developed using hybrid methodology involving analytical and experimental data. The newly developed correlations have been tested conducting case studies on SPT and pre- cracked/ notched SPT (p- SPT) specimens. The eventual applications of all the new correlations have been demonstrated by conducting a real- life case study involving degradation of structural material from ductile to semi- brittle state due to aging. Features: • Presents exclusive material on the remnant life assessment of in- service materials using SPTs. • Assesses the fracture toughness of ductile materials using the experimentally measured biaxial fracture strain. • Provides new equations to calculate the yield and ultimate stresses of copper and titanium alloys using measured SPT data. • Explores functions to correlate the load- displacement data of p- SPT specimens with fracture properties. • Includes case studies with direct relevance to the degradation of plant materials. This book is aimed at researchers, professionals, and graduate students in materials science and engineering, mechanical property characterization and testing, and small- scale experimentation. It is expected that the advanced methodology presented in this book to evaluate changes in the properties of aged materials during the service life using SPT data are useful to designers for safety evaluation and also to calculate the remaining service life of industrial components for life extension studies.
