Book excerpt: This study integrates surface structure data with faults observed in 2-D seismic reflection profiles and lineaments identified from aeromagnetic gradients, DEMs, slope aspect, and satellite imagery in order to map probable fault patterns. The study area is located in the Middle to Upper Devonian Catskill Delta Complex in the Appalachian Basin in central New York State. This previously unmapped study area is significant because of active oil and gas exploration in the region. Several characteristics of surface bedrock fractures were collected within the study area. Fracture characteristics include orientation, dip, spacing, fracture abutting relationships and fracture geometry. Fracture characteristics are displayed using modified rose diagrams to illustrate trends in orientation, frequency and fracture relationships. Three regional fracture orientations are common in the area. Fracture Intensification Domains (FIDs) are characterized by relatively closely spaced fractures; FIDs can indicate areas where faulting is probable. Each of the three regional fracture orientations have zones of closely spaced fractures. FIDs recognized at the surface correlate spatially with thrust and high angle faults observed in 2-D seismic and with lineaments. Lineaments identified from satellite imagery, DEMs, and aeromagnetic gradients are combined with exposed bedrock fracture data and seismic reflection data. Two anomalously long NW-striking aeromagnetic lineaments are located in the center of the study area. NNE- and NS-striking lineaments are dense where appropriately trending aeromagnetic gradients are located. NNE-, WNW-, ENE-striking lineaments are also coincident with fractures and FID orientations. The integration of these data promote mapping of FIDs in order to define areas with a higher probability of faults. This fault map will point to exploring areas that should be high-graded in the exploration for fractured-plays.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientific understanding of fluid flow in rock fracturesâ€"a process underlying contemporary earth science problems from the search for petroleum to the controversy over nuclear waste storageâ€"has grown significantly in the past 20 years. This volume presents a comprehensive report on the state of the field, with an interdisciplinary viewpoint, case studies of fracture sites, illustrations, conclusions, and research recommendations. The book addresses these questions: How can fractures that are significant hydraulic conductors be identified, located, and characterized? How do flow and transport occur in fracture systems? How can changes in fracture systems be predicted and controlled? Among other topics, the committee provides a geomechanical understanding of fracture formation, reviews methods for detecting subsurface fractures, and looks at the use of hydraulic and tracer tests to investigate fluid flow. The volume examines the state of conceptual and mathematical modeling, and it provides a useful framework for understanding the complexity of fracture changes that occur during fluid pumping and other engineering practices. With a practical and multidisciplinary outlook, this volume will be welcomed by geologists, petroleum geologists, geoengineers, geophysicists, hydrologists, researchers, educators and students in these fields, and public officials involved in geological projects.

Book excerpt: U.S. military lands are part of the public trust and the level of awareness of sustainability and land-use issues has risen significantly in recent years. Ehlen (U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center) and Harmon (U.S. Army Research Office) present 14 articles that look at the use of engineering geology principles and their applications to both military operations and environmental issues, although military operations and the environment are not always treated together. Topics include battlefield terrain evaluation, predicting fracture systems in enemy underground facilities, the geoenvironmental legacy of the Rock of Gibraltar military engineering, and erosion trends at Fort Leonard Wood. Book excerpt: This book is written for advanced earth science students, geologists, petroleum engineers and others who want to get quickly ‘up to speed’ on the interpretation of reflection seismic data. It is a development of material given to students on the MSc course in Petroleum Geology at Aberdeen University and takes the form of a course manual rather than a systematic textbook. It can be used as a self-contained course for individual study, or as the basis for a class programme. The book clarifies those aspects of the subject that students tend to find difficult, and provides insights through practical tutorials which aim to reinforce and deepen understanding of key topics and provide the reader with a measure of feedback on progress. Some tutorials may only involve drawing simple diagrams, but many are computer-aided (PC based) with graphics output to give insight into key steps in seismic data processing or into the seismic response of some common geological scenarios. Part I of the book covers basic ideas and it ends with two tutorials in 2-D structural interpretation. Part II concentrates on the current seismic reflection contribution to reservoir studies, based on 3-D data.

Book excerpt: A large part of the global population lives in arid lands which have low rainfall and often lack the water required for sustainable population and economic growth. This book presents a comprehensive description of the hydrogeology and hydrologic processes at work in arid lands. It describes the techniques that can be used to assess and manage the water resources of these areas with an emphasis on groundwater resources, including recent advances in hydrologic evaluation and the differences between how aquifer systems behave in arid lands versus more humid areas. Water management techniques are described and summarized to show how a more comprehensive approach to water management is required in these areas, including the need to be aware of cultural sensitivities and conditions unique to many arid regions. The integration of existing resources with the addition of new water sources, such as desalination of brackish water and seawater, along with reusing treated wastewater, will be required to meet future water supply needs. Also, changing climatic conditions will force water management systems to be more robust so that future water supply demands can be met as droughts become more intense and rainfall events become more intense. A range of water management techniques are described and discussed in order to illustrate the methods for integrating these measures within the context of arid lands conditions.
