Book excerpt: PREFACE. THE Author of this very practical treatise on Scotch Loch - Fishing desires clearly that it may be of use to all who had it. He does not pretend to have written anything new, but to have attempted to put what he has to say in as readable a form as possible. Everything in the way of the history and habits of fish has been studiously avoided, and technicalities have been used as sparingly as possible. The writing of this book has afforded him pleasure in his leisure moments, and that pleasure would be much increased if he knew that the perusal of it would create any bond of sympathy between himself and the angling community in general. This section is interleaved with blank shects for the readers notes. The Author need hardly say that any suggestions addressed to the case of the publishers, will meet with consideration in a future edition. We do not pretend to write or enlarge upon a new subject. Much has been said and written-and well said and written too on the art of fishing but loch-fishing has been rather looked upon as a second-rate performance, and to dispel this idea is one of the objects for which this present treatise has been written. Far be it from us to say anything against fishing, lawfully practised in any form but many pent up in our large towns will bear us out when me say that, on the whole, a days loch-fishing is the most convenient. One great matter is, that the loch-fisher is depend- ent on nothing but enough wind to curl the water, -and on a large loch it is very seldom that a dead calm prevails all day, -and can make his arrangements for a day, weeks beforehand whereas the stream- fisher is dependent for a good take on the state of the water and however pleasant and easy it may be for one living near the banks of a good trout stream or river, it is quite another matter to arrange for a days river-fishing, if one is looking forward to a holiday at a date some weeks ahead. Providence may favour the expectant angler with a good day, and the water in order but experience has taught most of us that the good days are in the minority, and that, as is the case with our rapid running streams, -such as many of our northern streams are, -the water is either too large or too small, unless, as previously remarked, you live near at hand, and can catch it at its best. A common belief in regard to loch-fishing is, that the tyro and the experienced angler have nearly the same chance in fishing, -the one from the stern and the other from the bow of the same boat. Of all the absurd beliefs as to loch-fishing, this is one of the most absurd. Try it. Give the tyro either end of the boat he likes give him a cast of ally flies he may fancy, or even a cast similar to those which a crack may be using and if he catches one for every three the other has, he may consider himself very lucky. Of course there are lochs where the fish are not abundant, and a beginner may come across as many as an older fisher but we speak of lochs where there are fish to be caught, and where each has a fair chance. Again, it is said that the boatman has as much to do with catching trout in a loch as the angler. Well, we dont deny that. In an untried loch it is necessary to have the guidance of a good boatman but the same argument holds good as to stream-fishing...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A distinctive, regal breed of scenthound derived from the centuries-old packs of France, the English Foxhound is an uncommon choice as a family companion, especially when compared to that small foxhound we know as the Beagle. The English Foxhound, first and foremost, is a thoroughbred hunting dog, prized for his athletic ability and stamina. The chapter on the breed's history paints a romantic picture of the breed running ahead of British redcoats on the field as well as hunting alongside America's first president, George Washington. Deciding whether the English Foxhound is the right dog for you is the focus of the chapter on the breed's characteristics. This packhound is more biddable than his American cousin (the American Foxhound), though a bit larger, and requires a king's portion of exercise, socialization, and daily attention. Because the English Foxhound was bred to run for long distances in the company of other foxhounds, his nature cannot be changed, and potential owners must decide whether they have the inclination to share their lives with such an active scenthound. For owners who decide to add an English Foxhound to their families, they will discover a happy-go-lucky, friendly companion dog that adores the company of children and enjoys being involved in the family's activities.Inside this Comprehensive Owner's Guide, new owners will find a well-prepared chapter on locating a reputable breeder and selecting a healthy, sound puppy. Given the rarity of the breed, new owners will require patience to find an English Foxhound puppy (or adult), but all breeders attest that it's worth the wait. Chapters on puppy-proofing the home and yard, purchasing the right supplies for the puppy as well as house-training, feeding, exercise, and grooming are illustrated with photographs of handsome adults and puppies. In all, there are over 135 full-color photographs in this useful and reliable volume. The author's advice on obedience training will help the reader better mold and train into the most well-mannered dog in the neighborhood. The extensive and lavishly illustrated chapter on health provides up-to-date detailed information on selecting a qualified veterinarian, vaccinations, preventing and dealing with parasites, infectious diseases, and more. Sidebars throughout the text offer helpful hints, covering topics as diverse as historical dogs, breeders, or kennels, toxic plants, first aid, crate training, carsickness, fussy eaters, and parasite control. Fully indexed.

This book was released on 2019-03-22 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bluetick Coonhound is a breed of Coonhound that originates from the United States of America. The breed was developed in Louisiana by mixing the English Foxhound, the Cur dog, the American Foxhound, the Black and Tan Coonhound and the 'Bleu de Gascogne' hound which originates from southwest France. The Bluetick Coonhound was originally registered as a variant of the English Foxhound and was only recognized as an individual breed in late 1940s. The Bluetick Coonhound gets its 'blue' coloring from black ticking on a white background, which gives the illusion of a navy blue coloration. The breed has a moderate length and glossy coat that will have the unique 'blue' in sporadic patches across its coat. The Bluetick Coonhound was bred to be able to efficiently hunt raccoons and other small prey. Due to their hunting history, the breed is highly hardy, athletic and energetic. The breed is known to be challenging to socialize with other small household animals, such as cats, as the Bluetick Coonhound has a tendency to 'hunt' them. However once trained, the Bluetick Coonhound is known to be a very mindful and affectionate breed that does extremely well in a household environment. Before purchasing any pet it is important to understand that as a pet owner you are responsible for the care and wellbeing of your pet. It is important to try and learn as much as you can about the animal you are considering to keep as a pet to make sure that your lifestyle, household and financial status are suited to provide your pet with the best possible care. This guide has been designed to provide you with both precise and concise information about a Bluetick Coonhound's basic needs to help you provide your pet with the best quality care practices. This guide will give an in-depth explanation on training your Bluetick Coonhound, raising your Bluetick Coonhound from a puppy, grooming, health care and everything in between! "The Bluetick Coonhound: A Complete and Comprehensive Beginners Guide to: Buying, Owning, Health, Grooming, Training, Obedience, Understanding and Caring for Your Bluetick Coonhound," by Michael Stonewood is the perfect purchase or gift for a first time Bluetick Coonhound owner. This guide includes sections on caring for a puppy, breeding, health care, training, the basic cost of owning a Bluetick Coonhound and much more. This book is the second edition - the first edition was published by 'Dog Care Professionals.'
