Book excerpt: The mound known as Canhasan Hueyuek 1, in the Konya Plain of south-central Turkey, has revealed a series of settlements running through the Chalcolithic period (c5500-3000 BC). This first volume detailing work carried out between 1961 and 1967, lays out the fundamental stratigraphy of the site and the major structural developments of the Chalcolithic period. Future volumes will examine the phases of discontinuity at the site (unique in the south and western Anatolian record) in more detail, with discussion of ceramic and environmental evidence.
Book Synopsis The Iranian Plateau during the Bronze Age by : Collectif
Download or read book The Iranian Plateau during the Bronze Age written by Collectif and published by MOM Éditions. This book was released on 2020-03-19 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book compiles a portion of the contributions presented during the symposium “Urbanisation, commerce, subsistence and production during the third millennium BC on the Iranian Plateau”, which took place at the Maison de l’Orient et de la Méditerranée in Lyon, the 29-30 of April, 2014. The twenty papers assembled provide an overview of the recent archaeological research on this region of the Middle East during the Bronze Age. The socio-economic transformation from rural villages to towns and nations has prompted many questions into this evolution of urbanisation. What was the impact of interactions between cultures in the Iranian Plateau and the surrounding regions (Mesopotamia, the South Caucasus, Central Asia, Indus Valley)? What was the overall context during the Bronze Age on the Iranian Plateau? What was the extent and means of the expansion of the Kuro-Araxe culture? How did the Elamite Kingdom become established? What new knowledge has been contributed by the recent excavations and studies undertaken in the east of Iran? What was the influence of the Indus Valley culture, known as an epicentre of urbanisation in South Asia? What are the unique characteristics of the ancient cultures in Iran? While the urbanisation of early Mesopotamia has been the subject of much debate for several decades, this topic has only recently been raised in respect to the Iranian Plateau. This volume is the product of an international community from Iranian, European, and American institutions, consisting of recognised specialists in the archaeology of the Iranian Bronze Age. It provides an overview of the latest research, including abundant results from current on-going excavations. The current state of archaeological research in Iran, comprising many dynamic questions and perspectives, is presented here in the form of original contributions on the first emergence of towns in the Near and Middle East.

Book Synopsis The Standards of Mesopotamia in the Third and Fourth Millennia BCE by : Renate Marian van Dijk-Coombes
Download or read book The Standards of Mesopotamia in the Third and Fourth Millennia BCE written by Renate Marian van Dijk-Coombes and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2023-04-05 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Depictions of standards form a fundamental part of the visual repertoire of ancient Mesopotamia. These depictions can offer great insight into the thought world of the peoples with which they are associated, because different standards were associated with different deities, and could be found in multiple contexts. In this book, Renate Marian van Dijk-Coombes examines the standards which are represented in the visual culture of the third and fourth millennia BCE, covering the Uruk, Early Dynastic, Akkadian and Neo-Sumerian periods. She analyses each of the different standards, how they looked, what they symbolised and the context(s) in which they were found. In addition, developments and changes in the representation of these standards are traced across the periods under discussion.

With its markedly broad range of types and quality, it provides insight into both the early history of the sanctuary and the nature of the export wares of this major Greek pottery center. In addition, the pottery provides some interesting new material for Corinthian vase painting in general, and adds to our knowledge of certain vase painters in particular. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first international meeting of the Archaeozoology of Southwest Asia and Adjacent Areas (ASWA) working group of the International Council for Archaeozoology (ICAZ) took place at the University of Groningen in 1992. Ever since, ASWA meetings have served as an inspiring gathering for those conducting archaeozoological research in Southwest Asia, the Eastern Mediterranean, North Africa, Central Asia and the Caucasus. This book contains sixteen papers presented at the 12th ASWA meeting hosted at its inaugural institution, the University of Groningen, Groningen Institute of Archaeology, as a continuation of the usual series and to celebrate the career of Dr. Hijlke Buitenhuis, associated member and alumnus of the institute, co-organizer of the first ASWA meeting. Like other ASWA proceedings before it, this volume is full of novel theoretical and methodological approaches and new research results, tackling a large variety of topics, from the geometric morphometrics of sheep in the Pre-Pottery Neolithic Period to Predynastic fishing in the Upper Nile, to the biogeography of hartebeest and hemione, and covering the vast region stretching between Hungary in the west and Azerbaijan in the east. The volume also features an opening article by ASWA founding member M.A. Zeder on the future of archaeozoology in the region. In honor of Dr. Hijlke Buitenhuis, his full bibliography is featured herein.
