Book Synopsis The Riders Come Out at Night by : Ali Winston
Download or read book The Riders Come Out at Night written by Ali Winston and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2024-03-12 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Over the last 60 years, more has been done in Oakland to reform policing than any other American city-and yet, Oakland has failed to reign in the tendencies of its police to prey upon, rather than protect, its communities. Why is this, and what does it mean both for Oakland, and for America? THE RIDERS COME OUT AT NIGHT will be the first authoritative account of the Oakland Police Department's troubling history of violence, secrecy, and mismanagement, and the city's unfulfilled promise to implement constitutional policing. By examining cases of police violence and corruption in one of America's most iconic cities, the Polk Award-winning investigative duo, Ali Winston & Darwin BondGraham, illustrate why criminal justice reform has proven an elusive goal for the entire nation. Their investigation will introduce readers to "The Riders," a band of corrupt cops running riot through the city, and to Keith Batt, a "fresh out of the academy" rookie assigned to patrol with the Riders. Winston & BondGraham deftly maneuver between the worlds of intransigent police culture to City Hall, where a lack of political will to see through reforms (and local prosecutors who failed to hold officers accountable) conspire to keep these cycles of brutality in place. Through never-before-seen reporting and interviews, the authors paint a portrait of a city-and nation-in crisis, and the steps needed to finally, once and for all, effectively address policing in the Unites States"--

Book Synopsis Global status report on road safety 2023 by : World Health Organization
Download or read book Global status report on road safety 2023 written by World Health Organization and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2023-12-12 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Global status report on road safety 2023 shows that the number of annual road traffic deaths has fallen slightly to 1.19 million. The report shows that efforts to improve road safety are having an impact, and that significant reductions in road traffic deaths can be made if proven measures are applied. Despite this, the price paid for mobility remains too high. Road traffic injuries remain the leading killer of children and young people aged 5-29 years. More than half of fatalities occur among pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists, in particular those living in low and middle-income countries. Urgent action is needed if the global goal of at least halving road traffic deaths and injuries by the year 2030 is to be achieved.
Book Synopsis Fourteen Points for the Twenty-First Century by : Richard H. Immerman
Download or read book Fourteen Points for the Twenty-First Century written by Richard H. Immerman and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2020-06-23 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the United States entered World War I, President Woodrow Wilson declared to Congress that the objective was not merely to bring "a new balance of power," but rather to bring a "just and secure peace" to the world by the end of the conflict. In this famous speech, known as "The Fourteen Points," Wilson offered the world a road map toward a more equitable international system in the midst of unprecedented global conflict, including ideas on the interconnectedness of democracy, trade, and the concept of a forum for peaceably resolving international disputes. Even decades after the end of the First World War, Wilson's ideas remained important and influenced many of his successors. But now, in the twenty-first century, there are forces at work in the world that Wilson could never have imagined, and those forces call for a new plan toward peace. In Fourteen Points for the Twenty-First Century: A Renewed Appeal for Cooperative Internationalism, Richard H. Immerman and Jeffrey A. Engel bring together a diverse group of thinkers who take up Wilson's call for a new world order by exploring fourteen new directions for the twenty-first century. The contributors—scholars, policymakers, entrepreneurs, poets, doctors, and scientists—propose solutions to contemporary challenges such as migration, global warming, health care, food security, and privacy in the digital age. Taken together, these points challenge American leaders and policymakers to champion an international effort, not to make America great again, but to work cooperatively with other nations on the basis of mutual respect.
