Book excerpt: Preface ALL who relish "Samuel Rutherford's Letters" will welcome the reprint of this volume, entitled, when first printed, "Collection of Valuable Sermons Preached by him at Sacramental Occasions, in the years 1630, 1634, and 1637." I have added two discourses to the collection, one preached in 1630, and another in 1633, and also what is commonly called a Communion Address, delivered in London. All breathe the same spirit as the famous "Letters," and are full of racy remark and illustration, bearing on scriptural doctrine and Christian experience. The Sermons were not published by himself, but from the notes of hearers, and so there are some awkward sentences and clauses. But still they are exceedingly valuable. The first nine sermons were originally printed at Glasgow, "from an old manuscript." The rest have frequently appeared in various forms. A Sermon, which bears the title, "The Cruel Watchman," and a fragment, "Christ's Voice from Heaven," are not genuine, and so are not included in this collection. His only other Sermons are that on Luke 8:22, preached before the House of Commons, 1644, and that on Daniel 6:26, preached before the House of Lords, 1645. ANDREW A. BONAR. GLASGOW, 1876. Preface to the Second Edition THE first issue of two thousand copies has been sold off within a year. In the meantime, two more of S. Rutherford's Sacramental Sermons have been sent to the Editor by friends who had them in their possession, and were happy to offer this addition to the First Twelve. They are given in this volume. Book Synopsis A Communion Sunday in Scotland ca. 1780 by : Robin A. Leaver
Download or read book A Communion Sunday in Scotland ca. 1780 written by Robin A. Leaver and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2009-11-02 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sources for 17th, 18th, and early 19th-century Eucharistic practices in the Church of Scotland are scarce, in part because each minister was free to draw up the form and content of the services he conducted. In addition, many 19th and 20th century liturgical scholars chose to dismiss this form of public worship, instead focusing on the earlier tradition of the Book of Common Order. A Communion Sunday in Scotland ca. 1780: Liturgies and Sermons addresses the dearth of these liturgical studies by presenting a modern edition of a late 18th-century published account of Communion Sunday in the Church of Scotland. Robin A. Leaver edits and annotates several sermons, prayers, and congregational songs by the Reverend John Logan (1747?-1788), together with relevant background information and comparative documents. Citing Logan's sermons, liturgies, and psalms as a representative model, Leaver demonstrates that there was a developed liturgical structure and form in the Church of Scotland, in which preaching, psalmody, and prayer expressed Calvinist/Presbyterian theology within established patterns of worship. Leaver also provides an overview of Scottish Eucharistic practices from the 16th to the 19th centuries. Appendixes offering a list of Scottish Psalm Tunes and a translation of the Palatinate Liturgy (1563) are followed by a comprehensive bibliography, making this a valuable reference.
Book Synopsis Cultures of Care by : Chris R. Langley
Download or read book Cultures of Care written by Chris R. Langley and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-05-11 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cultures of Care: Domestic Welfare, Discipline and the Church of Scotland, c. 1600–1689 explores voluntary networks of charity and their interaction with the Reformed Church of Scotland. Whereas most previous histories have assessed the growth of institutional charity, this book contends that the Reformed Church of Scotland was heavily reliant on informal, domestic modes of self-help throughout the seventeenth century. The existence and widespread acceptance of informal care dramatically changes our understanding of the impact of the Calvinist Reformation. Local ecclesiastical and secular leaders did not have a concerted policy to affect or ameliorate informal networks of care. Reformed authorities were members of these networks, as well as agents to police them, collapsing distinctions between informal and formal modes of Calvinist authority.
Book Synopsis The Supremacy of God in the Theology of Samuel Rutherford by : Guy M. Richard
Download or read book The Supremacy of God in the Theology of Samuel Rutherford written by Guy M. Richard and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2009-02-17 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the first modern in-depth study of the theology of one of the most influential figures in post-Reformation Scotland, Samuel Rutherford (c. 1600-1661). Although much has been written over the years about Rutherford's political thought or about his nearly mystical piety, very little actually has appeared in print about his theology. Among those hwo have written Rutherford's theology in the past, none have done so in a comprehensive, systematic manner, and none have devoted any attention at all to examining Rutherford's Latin treatises. The current work seeks to fill both lacunae, by presenting Rutherford's theology, beginning with the doctrine of assurance, and by drawing chiefly upon what is arguably his magnum opus theologiae, the Examen Arminianismi. The Examen, which consists of lectures Rutherford delivered to his divinity students at St. Andrews University, is the closest thing he has to a proper systematic theology text. But because it is also a polemical treatise, aimed primarily against the Arminians, the Examen provides a context for us to engage not only with the seventeenth-century dispute over Arminianism, but also with the more contemporary debate of Calvin vs. the Calvinists.

Book Synopsis Enforcing Reformation in Ireland and Scotland, 1550–1700 by : Crawford Gribben
Download or read book Enforcing Reformation in Ireland and Scotland, 1550–1700 written by Crawford Gribben and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-29 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last few years have witnessed a growing interest in the study of the Reformation period within the three kingdoms of Britain, revolutionizing the way in which scholars think about the relationships between England, Scotland and Ireland. Nevertheless, it is a fact that the story of the British Reformation is still dominated by studies of England, an imbalance that this book will help to right. By adopting an international perspective, the essays in this volume look at the motives, methods and impact of enforcing the Protestant Reformation in Ireland and Scotland. The juxtaposition of these two countries illuminates the similarities and differences of their social and political situations while qualifying many of the conclusions of recent historical work in each country. As well as Investigating what 'reformation' meant in the early modern period, and examining its literal, rhetorical, doctrinal, moral and political implications, the volume also explores what enforcing these various reformations could involve. Taken as a whole, this volume offers a fascinating insight into how the political authorities in Scotland and Ireland attempted, with varying degrees of success, to impose Protestantism on their countries. By comparing the two situations, and placing them in the wider international picture, our understanding of European confessionalization is further enhanced.
Book Synopsis Sacraments, Ceremonies and the Stuart Divines by : Bryan D. Spinks
Download or read book Sacraments, Ceremonies and the Stuart Divines written by Bryan D. Spinks and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book surveys developments in sacramental and liturgical discourse and discord, exploring the writings of English and Scottish divines, and focusing on baptism and the Lord's Supper. The reigns of James I and Charles I coincided with divergence and development in teaching on the sacraments in England and Scotland and with growing discord on liturgical texts and the ceremonial. Uniquely focusing on both nations in a single study, Bryan Spinks draws on theological treatises, sermons, catechisms, liturgical texts and writings by Scottish theologians hitherto neglected. Exploring the European roots of the churches of England and Scotland and how they became entwined in developments culminating in the Solemn League and Covenant and Westminster Directory, this book presents an authoritative study of sacramental and liturgical debate, developments, and experiments during the Stuart period.
