Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Paddy left for Dublin, a strange feeling came over Cate; for the first time in her life, she was actually scared. She told her daughter to watch over the other children while she went out to take a meal to Mr. McClary. Cate knocked on his door, waited, and then noticed the light was on under the door. She knocked harder this time until she felt something hard hit the back of her head. On the second blow, she fell to the ground. She raised her head and tried to make out the image of the person standing above her. As days passed, Paddy knew what he had to do. "Maureen, come help your da with the bed." Paddy took the bed apart piece by piece and put it in his large truck. Maureen's tears fell down her face as each post came down. She remembered her ma, the times she snuggled with her, and the comfort she felt just being next to her. As Paddy finished each piece, he held back his anger for the one that killed his precious Cate. As Paddy and Maureen arrived at Weston, they were greeted by Lady Emily Weston. The bed was sold to her and she requested that Maureen accompany her dad on the journey. Emily first met Maureen when she walked into the furniture store and heard the young girl crying. Little did Emily know that this girl would make such a change in her life!

Book excerpt: Ashbys are an English country-squire family living at their centuries-old family estate Latchetts, in the village of Clare, near the south coast of England. Beatrice Ashby (Aunt Bee) takes care of the estate and of the four children of her late brother Bill. Since Bill and his wife died, Bee has kept the estate going by turning the family stable into a profitable business, combining breeding, selling and training horses with riding lessons. When Bill's oldest son Simon turns twenty-one, he will inherit Latchetts and a large trust fund left by his mother. Simon had a twin brother, Patrick, but soon after their parents died, he disappeared, leaving what was taken as a suicide note. Brat Farrar is a young man recently returned to England from America. As an orphan boy he ended up in the western US, where he worked at ranches and stables for several years and became an expert horseman until a fall injured his leg and he was left with a limp. On a street in London, someone completely unknown to Brat greets him as "Simon". This stranger is Alec Loding, a second-rate actor who knows the Ashby family intimately. He comes up with a plan to use Brat's resemblance to Simon and Patrick to his benefit. Brat should impersonate the missing twin, Patrick and as the elder brother, claim the trust and the estate. Alec would coach Brat on background details for a share of the profit. Brat is reluctant but eventually agrees, especially when he hears about the horses.

Download or read book José Ferrer written by Mike Peros and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2020-08-19 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: José Ferrer (1912–1992) became the first Puerto Rican actor to win the Best Actor Academy Award for the 1950 film version of Cyrano de Bergerac. His iconic portrayal of the lovelorn poet/swordsman had already won him the Tony in 1947, and he would be identified with Cyrano for the rest of his life. Ferrer was a theatrical dynamo with limitless energy; in 1952 he directed Stalag 17, The Fourposter, and The Shrike (which he starred in) on Broadway, while New York City movie marquees were heralding his appearance in Anything Can Happen. At his apex in the 1950s, Ferrer was in constant demand both in theater and movies. He capitalized on his Oscar with such triumphs as Moulin Rouge and The Caine Mutiny. Not content with merely acting, Ferrer soon became a force behind the camera, acting and directing such critically well-received films as The Shrike and The Great Man. Success proved difficult to sustain. In the late 1950s, such ambitious theatrical productions as Edwin Booth and Juno were critical and commercial flops, while film studios also lost their patience with him. By the mid-1960s, Ferrer took whatever roles he could get in films, television, or regional theater. In addition, Ferrer had a turbulent personal life. His first marriage to actress Uta Hagen ended in divorce and scandal. His personal and professional relationship with his Othello costar Paul Robeson landed Ferrer before the House Un-American Activities Committee. Ferrer’s marriage to actress/dancer Phyllis Hill was marred by his infidelity, while his initial wedded bliss with singer Rosemary Clooney eroded as his career began to ebb while hers started to peak. In spite of everything, Ferrer managed to endure and was working practically right up to his death. Ferrer maintained his pride in his Puerto Rican heritage, donating his Oscar to the University of Puerto Rico while championing the work of Latino poets and playwrights. He continuously evolved, striving to remain relevant, stretching his talents (including cabaret, operas, musicals, and yes, ballet!), and writing the occasional guest column for major newspapers. Ferrer’s life is an American success story and a testament to reinvention and resilience.

Book Synopsis Before the Parade Passes By by : John Anthony Gilvey
Download or read book Before the Parade Passes By written by John Anthony Gilvey and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2005-11 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Golden Age of the Broadway musical, few director-choreographers could infuse a new musical with dance and movement in quite the way Gower Champion could. From his earliest Broadway success with Bye Bye Birdie to his triumphant and bittersweet valedictory, 42nd Street, musicals directed by Champion filled the proscenium with life. At their best, they touched the heart and stirred the soul with a skillful blend of elegance and American showmanship. He began his career as one-half of "America's Youngest Dance Team" with Jeanne Tyler and later teamed with his wife, dance partner, and longtime collaborator, Marge Champion. This romantic ballroom duo danced across America in the smartest clubs and onto the television screen, performing story dances that captivated the country. They ultimately took their talent to Hollywood, where they starred in the 1951 remake of Show Boat, Lovely to Look At, and other films. But Broadway always called to Champion, and in 1959 he was tapped to direct Bye Bye Birdie. The rest is history. In shows like Birdie, Carnival, Hello, Dolly!, I Do! I Do!, Sugar, and 42nd Street, luminaries such as Chita Rivera, Dick Van Dyke, Carol Channing, Mary Martin, Robert Preston, Tony Roberts, Robert Morse, Tammy Grimes, and Jerry Orbach brought Champion's creative vision to life. Working with composers and writers like Jerry Herman, Michael Stewart, Charles Strouse, Lee Adams, and Bob Merrill, he streamlined the musical making it flow effortlessly with song and dance from start to finish. John Gilvey has spoken with many of the people who worked with Champion, and in Before the Parade Passes By he tells the life story of this most American of Broadway musical director-choreographers from his early days dancing with Marge to his final days spent meticulously honing the visual magic of 42nd Street. Before the Parade Passes By is the life story of one man who personified the glory of the Broadway musical right up until the moment of his untimely death. When the curtain fell to thunderous applause on the opening night of 42nd Street, August 25, 1980, legendary impresario David Merrick came forward, silenced the audience, and announced that Champion had died that morning. As eminent theatre critic Ethan Mordden has firmly put it, "the Golden Age was over." Though the Golden Age of the Broadway musical is over, John Gilvey brings it to life again by telling the story of Gower Champion, one of its most passionate and creative legends.

Book Synopsis Lives in Land – Mucking excavations by : Christopher Evans
Download or read book Lives in Land – Mucking excavations written by Christopher Evans and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2015-12-31 with total page 585 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The excavations led by Margaret and Tom Jones on the Thames gravel terraces at Mucking, Essex, undertaken between 1965 and 1978 are legendary. The largest area excavation ever undertaken in the British Isles, involving around 5000 participants, recorded around 44,000 archaeological features dating from the Beaker to Anglo-Saxon periods and recovered something in the region of 1.7 million finds of Mesolithic to post-medieval date. While various publications have emerged over the intervening years, the death of both directors, insufficient funding, many organizational complications and the sheer volume of material evidence have severely delayed full publication of this extraordinary palimpsest landscape. Lives in Land is the first of two major volumes which bring together all the evidence from Mucking, presenting both the detail of many important structures and assemblages and a comprehensive synthesis of landscape development through the ages: settlement histories, changing land-use, death and burial, industry and craft activities. The long time-gap since completion of the excavations has allowed the authors the unprecedented opportunity to stand back from the density of site data and place the vast sum of Mucking evidence in the wider context of the archaeology of southern England throughout the major periods of occupation and activity. Lives in Land begins with a thorough evaluation of the methods, philosophy and archival status of the Mucking project against the organizational and funding background of its time, and discusses its fascinating and complex history through a period of fundamental change in archaeological practice, legislation, finance, research priorities and theoretical paradigms in British Archaeology. Subsequent chapters deal with the prehistoric landscape, each focusing on the major themes that emerge by major period from analysis and synthesis of the data. The authors draw on archival material including site notebooks and personal accounts from key participants to provide a detailed but lively account of this iconic landscape investigation.
