Book excerpt: Fourier Transforms and Convolutions for the Experimentalist provides the experimentalist with a guide to the principles and practical uses of the Fourier transformation. It aims to bridge the gap between the more abstract account of a purely mathematical approach and the rule of thumb calculation and intuition of the practical worker. The monograph springs from a lecture course which the author has given in recent years and for which he has drawn upon a number of sources, including a set of notes compiled by the late Dr. I. C. Browne from a series of lectures given by Mr. J . A. Ratcliffe of the Cavendish Laboratory. The book begins with an introduction to Fourier Transform. It provides a definition o Fourier Transform, describes its applications, and presents the formal mathematical statement of the transform. Separate chapters discuss the elementary transform, extended functions, and direct applications of Fourier transforms. The final two chapters deal with limitations, products, and convolutions; and the differentiation of Fourier transforms.

Book excerpt: This book presents in a unified way the various fast algorithms that are used for the implementation of digital filters and the evaluation of discrete Fourier transforms. The book consists of eight chapters. The first two chapters are devoted to background information and to introductory material on number theory and polynomial algebra. This section is limited to the basic concepts as they apply to other parts of the book. Thus, we have restricted our discussion of number theory to congruences, primitive roots, quadratic residues, and to the properties of Mersenne and Fermat numbers. The section on polynomial algebra deals primarily with the divisibility and congruence properties of polynomials and with algebraic computational complexity. The rest of the book is focused directly on fast digital filtering and discrete Fourier transform algorithms. We have attempted to present these techniques in a unified way by using polynomial algebra as extensively as possible. This objective has led us to reformulate many of the algorithms which are discussed in the book. It has been our experience that such a presentation serves to clarify the relationship between the algorithms and often provides clues to improved computation techniques. Chapter 3 reviews the fast digital filtering algorithms, with emphasis on algebraic methods and on the evaluation of one-dimensional circular convolutions. Chapters 4 and 5 present the fast Fourier transform and the Winograd Fourier transform algorithm.

Book excerpt: Long employed in electrical engineering, the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) is now applied in a range of fields through the use of digital computers and fast Fourier transform (FFT) algorithms. But to correctly interpret DFT results, it is essential to understand the core and tools of Fourier analysis. Discrete and Continuous Fourier Transform

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does the contact area of two stiff objects look like when they are pressed against each other and how large is the force? The Dutch company VORtech uses a software package called CONTACT to answer such questions, which involves a lot of convolution operations. This work shows how convolutions between matrices can be performed much faster by using a technique called fast Fourier transform'. The first part provides a theoretical explanation of Fourier transforms and convolutions. Barrowes' method for computing the product of a matrix of a specific form with a vector is also explained since it is closely related to convolutions. In the second part, the performance of the standard convolution method is compared to Barrowes' method and the fast Fourier transform method, regarding both memory usage and run time. Implementation details using the Intel(r) Math Kernel Library are also given. Experiments show that using fast Fourier transforms can result in significant speed-ups. Possible optimizations are explained and tested, which results in a few general recommendations for using fast Fourier transforms optimally.

Book excerpt: The object of this book is two-fold -- on the one hand it conveys to mathematical readers a rigorous presentation and exploration of the important applications of analysis leading to numerical calculations. On the other hand, it presents physics readers with a body of theory in which the well-known formulae find their justification. The basic study of fundamental notions, such as Lebesgue integration and theory of distribution, allow the establishment of the following areas: Fourier analysis and convolution Filters and signal analysis time-frequency analysis (gabor transforms and wavelets). The whole is rounded off with a large number of exercises as well as selected worked-out solutions.

Book excerpt: This book is derived from lecture notes for a course on Fourier analysis for engineering and science students at the advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate level. Beyond teaching specific topics and techniques—all of which are important in many areas of engineering and science—the author's goal is to help engineering and science students cultivate more advanced mathematical know-how and increase confidence in learning and using mathematics, as well as appreciate the coherence of the subject. He promises the readers a little magic on every page. The section headings are all recognizable to mathematicians, but the arrangement and emphasis are directed toward students from other disciplines. The material also serves as a foundation for advanced courses in signal processing and imaging. There are over 200 problems, many of which are oriented to applications, and a number use standard software. An unusual feature for courses meant for engineers is a more detailed and accessible treatment of distributions and the generalized Fourier transform. There is also more coverage of higher-dimensional phenomena than is found in most books at this level.

Book excerpt: Fourier transform theory is of central importance in a vast range of applications in physical science, engineering, and applied mathematics. This new edition of a successful student text provides a concise introduction to the theory and practice of Fourier transforms, using qualitative arguments wherever possible and avoiding unnecessary mathematics. After a brief description of the basic ideas and theorems, the power of the technique is then illustrated by referring to particular applications in optics, spectroscopy, electronics and telecommunications. The rarely discussed but important field of multi-dimensional Fourier theory is covered, including a description of computer-aided tomography (CAT-scanning). The final chapter discusses digital methods, with particular attention to the fast Fourier transform. Throughout, discussion of these applications is reinforced by the inclusion of worked examples. The book assumes no previous knowledge of the subject, and will be invaluable to students of physics, electrical and electronic engineering, and computer science.

Book excerpt: The convolution transform includes as special cases such familiar transforms as the Laplace, Fourier-sine, Fourier-cosine, Hankel, Meier, and Weierstrass (or Gauss). As a consequence any general theory about it may serve as a unifying influence for the evergrowing literature concerning integral transforms. Originally published in 1955.
