Book excerpt: Volume one (which is a revised reprint of a book first published in 1997 that sold 10,000 copies) covers a wide variety of 4WD tracks (some of them very tough indeed). The book has no photographs but includes a free CD which has photos taken all along the routes and details for the GPS user. (This was intended as an additional selling point, but I suspect it is a bit beyond the average 4WD driver.) The author, Andy Cockroft, is very well known and active in 4WD circles. The North Island books have always been slower sellers than their South Island equivalents because there just aren't that many good places to go to, though one would think there are more 4WDs in the north. Maybe they are all stuck in traffic jams in Remuera.

Book excerpt: This volume introduces 93 new 4WD roads and tracks throughout the South Island, described in the same meticulous detail as in the first volume. Some are on public land, some on private land where owners are prepared to share their environment with recreational four-wheel-drivers. Full contact information is supplied. Among the routes are several longer trips for the serious off-roader, as well as a number of easily accessible expeditions for the day-tripper. As before, each route description comes with a map and all the information needed to ensure that every journey is an exciting -- and safe -- adventure. The plain-English guide to competent off-road driving in Part One has been expanded and updated. Of course in your enthusiasm and excitement about hitting the dirt tracks of the back country, you may not read all the information about getting to know your vehicle, essential and optional extras, preparing for a trip, driving techniques for difficult terrain, recovering a vehicle in trouble -- and all the other basic down-to-each advice the authors provide. We recommend you do, and furthermore, we guarantee that you'll be very grateful to have a copy of this book in your glovebox next time you are stranded in river gravel or have sunk to your axles in some good South Island mud and don't know what to do next!

Book excerpt: This is a completely revised edition of the original South Island off-road guidebook, 4WD South Island: 77 Off Road Adventures, which hit the bookshops in 1996. Thousands of copies of that book, and of the second volume, 4WD South Island: 93 New Off Road Adventures, are in thousands of gloveboxes, and from your feedback we know they are getting plenty of use. As well as re-traveling and revising the original 77 routes, the authors have now included 30 new ones from all over the South Island. The tracks move through farmland and bush valleys, climb to the crater rims of Banks Peninsula, follow historic stagecoach or stock routes, wind through beech forests and ancient rainforests, across the blasted, treeless tussock lands of Otago and up and down Canterbury' S braided rivers. Some of them will challenge even the most intrepid adventurer, while others will serve as an introduction for the newcomer to the wonderful world of four-wheel-driving. For those new to the series, this book is for those of you who own a 4WD or are planning to buy or rent one and are itching to put it to the test greater than the battle of the supermarket parking lot. It will tell you not only how to get to some of the South Island's finest 'wild places', but more important, how to get home again safely. The guide to competent off-road driving in Park One, which has been expanded and updated, covers everything you will need to know about your vehicle, driving techniques for difficult terrain, recovering a vehicle in trouble--and it offers lots more down-to-earth and practical advice.

Book excerpt: In 1959 an earthquake in central Vancouver Island devastated the lakeside community of Pyrite Ridge. The seismic event triggered landslides that isolated the town and killed sixteen people, while a geological phenomenon known as a segue caused the lake to drop an astonishing 150 metres. Perched on the precipice of a yawning abyss and cut off from the world by tons of rubble, Pyrite Ridge became a place of myth and lore. After finding a newspaper attached to a red balloon that supposedly came from the town, Travis Sivart, an Air Force officer struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder, sets out to investigate the legend of Pyrite Ridge. After an arduous journey he stumbles upon the community, now known as The Segway, which is inhabited by an eclectic group of thirty people. Travis spends a week in the town, learning of its remarkable history and interacting with the unforgettable residents. Everyone has their own compelling tale of how they came to The Segway, creating an extraordinary tapestry that causes Travis to question his own sanity. Is there a connection between his personal demons and the tragic events of 1959? Life at the Precipice seamlessly blends fact, fiction, and popular science in a unique combination of drama and humor that will have readers wondering if the mysterious town of The Segway actually exists.

Extreme adventure, near misses, good sorts, and one beautiful country – Wildboy has it all! Fast going off the rails and hanging out with the wrong crowd, Brando Yelavich, a plucky 20-year-old from Auckland's North Shore, decided he needed to change his life. He needed a mission. He was going to walk around New Zealand. Brando reached Cape Reinga on 23 August 2014 after a gruelling journey of over 8000 kilometres, traversed almost completely on foot over 600 days – the first time it had ever been done. It was an outlandish odyssey of physical and mental fortitude. He slept under the stars and lived off the land. He almost drowned on several occasions and experienced near-hypothermia. He gained 20 kilograms. But the transformation ran much deeper. As much for fans of Bear Grylls or Cheryl Strayed's Wild as it is for those of the off-the-grid outdoors Kiwi experience, Wildboy is a ripping adventure story with an inspiring life change at its heart.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating study of the specialized vehicles, kit and techniques of the Long-Range Desert Group who pioneered long-range desert warfare in World War II and worked closely with the embryonic SAS. The Long Range Desert Group was one of the most famous special units of World War II, operating heavily modified vehicles deep behind enemy lines to gather intelligence and support the raids of David Stirling's new Special Air Service. When war broke out, a pre-war explorer and army officer, Ralph Bagnold, convinced Middle East Command of the need for a reconnaissance force to penetrate into Italian-held desert. Bagnold tested four types of vehicles over rocks and through soft sand to find the best one for his new unit. He selected the Chevrolet WB (30 CWT) as the signature vehicle of the Long Range Desert Group because it is 'fast, simple and easy to handle'. With left-hand steering, horizontal grill and round fenders on the rear wheels, these trucks proved themselves popular and effective. The durability of the Chevrolets was demonstrated in January 1941 with an audacious raid on the Italian fort/air strip at Murzuk, hundreds of miles behind enemy lines. This book explains the detail of all the vehicles of the LRDG, as well as their modifications, driving techniques and special kit for surviving behind enemy lines in one of the most hostile environments on earth.
