Book Synopsis The Logical Foundations of Mathematics by : William S. Hatcher
Download or read book The Logical Foundations of Mathematics written by William S. Hatcher and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-09 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Logical Foundations of Mathematics offers a study of the foundations of mathematics, stressing comparisons between and critical analyses of the major non-constructive foundational systems. The position of constructivism within the spectrum of foundational philosophies is discussed, along with the exact relationship between topos theory and set theory. Comprised of eight chapters, this book begins with an introduction to first-order logic. In particular, two complete systems of axioms and rules for the first-order predicate calculus are given, one for efficiency in proving metatheorems, and the other, in a "natural deduction" style, for presenting detailed formal proofs. A somewhat novel feature of this framework is a full semantic and syntactic treatment of variable-binding term operators as primitive symbols of logic. Subsequent chapters focus on the origin of modern foundational studies; Gottlob Frege's formal system intended to serve as a foundation for mathematics and its paradoxes; the theory of types; and the Zermelo-Fraenkel set theory. David Hilbert's program and Kurt Gödel's incompleteness theorems are also examined, along with the foundational systems of W. V. Quine and the relevance of categorical algebra for foundations. This monograph will be of interest to students, teachers, practitioners, and researchers in mathematics.

Book Synopsis Foundations of Mathematics and other Logical Essays by : Frank Plumpton Ramsey
Download or read book Foundations of Mathematics and other Logical Essays written by Frank Plumpton Ramsey and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-15 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is Volume V in a series of eight on the Philosophy of Logic and Mathematics. Originally published in 1931, this study offers a collection of logical essays around the topic of the foundations of mathematics. Though mathematical teaching was Ramsey's profession, philosophy was his vocation. Reared on the logic of Principia Mathematica, he was early to see the importance of Dr. Wittgenstein's work (in the translation of which he assisted); and his own published papers were largely based on this. But the previously unprinted essays and notes collected in this volume show him moving towards a kind of pragmatism, and the general treatise on logic upon which at various times he had been engaged was to have treated truth and knowledge as purely natural phenomena to be explained psychologically without recourse to distinctively logical relations.

Book Synopsis Foundations of Combinatorics with Applications by : Edward A. Bender
Download or read book Foundations of Combinatorics with Applications written by Edward A. Bender and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 2013-01-18 with total page 789 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This introduction to combinatorics, the foundation of the interaction between computer science and mathematics, is suitable for upper-level undergraduates and graduate students in engineering, science, and mathematics. The four-part treatment begins with a section on counting and listing that covers basic counting, functions, decision trees, and sieving methods. The following section addresses fundamental concepts in graph theory and a sampler of graph topics. The third part examines a variety of applications relevant to computer science and mathematics, including induction and recursion, sorting theory, and rooted plane trees. The final section, on generating functions, offers students a powerful tool for studying counting problems. Numerous exercises appear throughout the text, along with notes and references. The text concludes with solutions to odd-numbered exercises and to all appendix exercises.

Book Synopsis Foundations of Primary Mathematics Education by : Fiona Budgen
Download or read book Foundations of Primary Mathematics Education written by Fiona Budgen and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2020-07-28 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many pre-service teachers admit to feeling unsure about the mathematics they will have to teach in primary school. Others find it difficult to know how to apply the theories of teaching and learning they study in other courses to the teaching of mathematics. This book begins by outlining some of the key considerations of effective mathematics teaching and learning. These include understanding student motivation, classroom management, overcoming maths anxiety and developing a positive learning environment. The authors also introduce the curriculum and assessment processes, and explore the use of ICT in the maths classroom. Part B outlines in a straightforward and accessible style the mathematical content knowledge required of a primary teacher. The content extends beyond the primary level to Year 9 of the Australian Curriculum as, while primary teachers may not have to teach this content, knowing it is a key part of being a strong teacher and will assist pre-service teachers to meet the requirements of the LANTITE (the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education students). Featuring graphics and worked examples and using clear and friendly language throughout, this is the essential introduction for students wishing to begin teaching primary mathematics with confidence and enthusiasm. 'The writing style is clean and uncomplicated; exactly what my maths education students need. The blend of theories, curriculum, planning, assessment and mathematical content knowledge strikes the balance that is missing in many texts.' -- Dr Geoff Hilton, University of Queensland
