Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foundations of Lifelong Education deals with the interdisciplinary foundations of lifelong education and examines a number of basic issues concerning lifelong education, such as why education should be treated as a lifelong process, or how the functions of lifelong education are related to historical and contemporary developments in society. The goals, contents, and processes of learning appropriate to the aspirations of lifelong education are also explored, as well as the extent to which lifelong education is feasible and practicable in different socio-economic and ideological conditions. Comprised of eight chapters, this book begins with an overview of methodological considerations in the present study, such as the nature of the foundations content; general steps that may be followed for constructing discipline-based foundations; and the ways of incorporating several elements of interdisciplinarity into the study. The reader is then introduced to the sociological and philosophical aspects of lifelong education, along with the historical background on the concept of lifelong education. In addition to sociology and philosophy, lifelong education in relation to anthropology, ecology, psychology, and economics is also analyzed. The book concludes by presenting illustrative analyses and syntheses of the ideas discussed in the preceding chapters based on selected disciplines. This monograph is intended for educators, social reformers, and educational policymakers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a comprehensive and critical analysis of the philosophical foundations of adult education. Six major systems of educational thought -- liberal education, progressivism, behaviorism, humanistic education, radicalism, and conceptual analysis -- provide the framework for an examination of the views of prominent adult educators and major programs in adult education. This much-needed work contributes to our understanding of the personalities, issues, and programs in the field of education; it also stimulates readers to clarify their own personal philosophy of education. A bibliographic essay presents the developments in each of the six systems over the past 15 years. Three major areas -- phenomenology, critical theory, and feminist theory -- are discussed within this framework.

We immerse ourselves in stories, observe the intricacies of the world, and seek educational opportunities. But lifelong learning is far more than acquiring information or completing a degree. It is a happy quest informing the habits of our minds and the affections of our hearts. And for the Christian, the goal is richer and deeper joy, to the glory of God and the eternal good of others. In Foundations for Lifelong Learning, longtime pastor John Piper casts Christian education as the process of growing in our ability to navigate God's word and world. Piper introduces readers to 6 vital habits— observe accurately, understand clearly, evaluate fairly, feel appropriately, apply wisely, and express compellingly. Ultimately readers will be encouraged to find Christ in and above all things—seriously and joyfully glorifying God, no matter their vocational calling. Appeals to Students and Educators: Explores 6 habits to inspire a lifetime of learning, wisdom, and wonder Offers a Biblical Perspective: Teaches how lifelong learning ultimately connect to God, his word, and our world Countercultural: Explains how one's vocation, degree, and monetary success are not always representations of quality lifelong learning Written by John Piper: Author of Don't Waste Your Life; Come, Lord Jesus; Desiring God; and Providence

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent decades, education at all levels has been seriously impoverished by a growing obsession with standards, targets, skills and competences. According to this model, only a circumscribed range of basic cognitive skills and competences are the business of education, whose main role is to provide employability credentials for people competing for jobs in the global economy. The result is a one-dimensional, economistic and bleakly utilitarian conception of the educational task. In Mindfulness and Learning: Celebrating the Affective Dimension of Education, Terry Hyland advances the thesis that education stands in need of a rejuvenation of its affective function – the impact it has on the emotional, social, moral and personal development of learners. Drawing on the Buddhist conception of mindfulness, he advances a powerful argument for redressing this imbalance by enhancing the affective domain of learning. Mindfulness and Learning: Celebrating the Affective Dimension of Education shows how the concept and practice of ‘mindfulness’ – non-judgmental, present moment awareness and experience – can enrich learning at all levels. Mindfulness thus contributes to the enhanced achievement of general educational goals, and helps remedy the gross deficiency of the affective/emotional aspects of contemporary theory and practice. The author outlines a mindfulness-based affective education (MBAE) programme and shows how it might be introduced into educational provision from the early years to adult education with a view to harmonising the cognitive-affective balance across the system.
