Book excerpt: Foundational Knowledge for the Practice of Family Medicine in West Africa is a selection of introductory concepts from literature using literature search and review; a collection of lectures from eminent family physicians from South Africa, Canada, United Kingdom, and United States; lecture notes; seminal essays; and journal articles that guided the author through the transition from general practice to family medicine in the 1980s and 1990s. The concept of family medicine in West Africa was a paradigm shift from a specialty conception of a conglomeration of independent specialties in general practice to a unique specialty with its own distinct identity with a fundamental principle based on the biopsychosocial model. The specialty draws a distinctive identity from its approach to care by placing emphasis on the contextual setting of the patient, starting with the family and extending to the sociocultural and economic environment. This composite approach to health care was new and confusing to the uninitiated medical graduate undergoing a residency training taught in the traditional biomedical reductionist model and to other medical specialists who asked what new knowledge we were bringing to the table that other specialists were not already teaching. As for those teachers of family medicine in the subregion, it was quite clear as to the need for this conceptual framework in family medicine as opposed to the limitation of general practice. This book documents the struggle to position family medicine as a separate specialty of medicine in West Africa.

Book excerpt: Becoming the Success Master Being a diagnostician is like espionage. After many years of interviewing thousands of people failing to thrive, I realized that too many of them just stumble through life like playing a game of poker without knowing the rules. Nimble Jack is one of the casualties of this dilemma, who, wisely enough, sought out a personal coach. He is the hero and inspiration for this book. He invited me regularly to his office as his personal coach and also to act as a proxy in handling challenging cases in his role as counselor for his company. He mastered my dynamic model of influence and the psychology of winning which are prime levers that drove his performance from good to great. After reading this book, you'll understand why, in spite of good education and holding a job, you may still be echelons away from becoming the success master or star you are destined to be.

Book excerpt: The experiences of African Americans in urban communities are distinct from those of other ethnic groups, and to be truly understood require an in-depth appreciation of the interface between micro- and macro-level factors. This sweeping text, an outgrowth of a groundbreaking urban social work curriculum, focuses exclusively on the African American experience through field education, community engagement, and practice. It presents a framework for urban social work practice that encompasses a deep understanding of the challenges faced by this community. From a perspective based on empowerment, strengths, resilience, cultural competence, and multiculturalism, the book delivers proven strategies for social work practice with the urban African American population. It facilitates the development of creative thinking skills and the ability to "meet people where they are" skills that are often necessary for true transformation to take root. The book describes an overarching framework for understanding and practicing urban social work, including definitions and theories that have critical implications for working with people in such communities. It encompasses the contributions of African American pioneers regarding a response to such challenges as poverty, oppression, and racism. Focusing on the theory, practice, and policy aspects of urban social work, the book examines specific subsets of the urban African American population including children, adults, families, and older adults. It addresses the challenges of urban social work in relation to public health, health, and mental health; substance abuse; criminal justice; and violence prevention. Additionally, the book discusses how to navigate the urban built environment and the intersection between African Americans and other diverse groups. Chapters include outcome measures of effectiveness, case studies, review questions, suggested activities, and supplemental readings. KEY FEATURES: Fills a void in the literature on urban social work practice with African Americans Presents the outgrowth of a renowned urban curriculum, field education, research, community engagement, and practice Fulfills the requirements of the CSWE in the Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards regarding diversity Synthesizes micro, mezzo, and macro content in each chapter Provides contributions from African American pioneers in urban social work practice Accompanying Instructor's Manual and PowerPoint Slides

It also explores the public health impacts of such classical thoughts from a completely new angle. In Ayurveda, there are huge gaps between knowledge and its practical application. The book identifies these gaps to provide a new perspective on Ayurvedic wisdom in light of contemporary scientific advances.
