Book excerpt: For over a century ceramics have been found and collected from various sites in the Philippines. The presence and distribution of these wares throughout the archipelago testify to the country's strategic location on the ancient maritime trade route and to its interaction with its southern Chinese as well as Southeast Asian neighbors. Of particular interest has been the excavation of grave goods, remnants of the burial culture of the Filipinos before the arrival of the European colonizers. Among these are the much-prized white ware and qingbai ware from Jiangxi, Fujian, and Guangdong provinces in China, as well as white ware of Thai and Vietnamese provenance. Published in connection with an exhibition presented by the Oriental Ceramic Society of the Philippines in Manila in March 1993, this book shows the bulk of the exhibition. comprised of the delicate blue-tinged white qingbai porcelain from Jingdezhen in Jiangxi province and produced in large numbers during the Southern Song period (A.D. 1127-1279). The exceptionally fine craftmanship and variety of shapes are amply illustrated in this book. Included are five previously unpublished papers by Rita C. Tan, Li Zhi-yan, Rosemary E. Scott, Allison I. Diem, and Roxanna M. Broun relating to the characteristics of white ware and to their excavation in the Philippines supplement the catalogue of illustrations.

Book excerpt: The 7,107 islands of the Philippines archipelago represent a wide range of habitats from tidal sand bars to mighty mountain ranges; from coral reefs through rainforests to summit grasslands. The country's isolation from mainland Asia also gives it a high number of endemic plant and animal species. Nigel Hicks' stunning photographs and vivid text explores each of the natural environments and habitats. He describes and illustrates species of the open seas, of the coral reefs and sandy shallows, and of the many different types of forests including the 37 species of mangrove tree found in the Philippines. He gives an overview of the protected areas that safeguard a cross-section of these vital environments and discusses the conservation issues past and present. Wild Philippines provides an authoritative and entertaining study of the wide spectrum of wildlife on the land and in the seas of this diverse country.

Book excerpt: Written with high school and undergraduate students as the target audience, this volume is ideal for anyone interested in Philippine history. It pieces together evidence from the precolonial era, illustrating the country's relationship with its neighboring Asian countries, its functioning social system, its widespread literacy, and developed system of writing. Its discussion of the precolonial era acknowledges the significant role women played in Philippine society, one that changed significantly with the coming of the friars. Its summary of over 350 years of colonial rule by Spain and almost 50 years by the United States helps the reader to understand why the Philippines is uniquely different from its Asian neighbors. It illustrates how Filipinos responded to colonialization, their active participation in the making of the nation and the shaping of Philippine society, and most importantly, the courage and resiliency of the Filipino people.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philippines, Filipinos, Filipinas, Pinoy, Pinay, Pilipino, Pilipina. Confused? It seems everybody has a name for the inhabitants of the Philippines, including the Pinoys themselves. But don't worry. On the first page of this delightful guide to the etiquette, customs and taboos of more than 7,000 islands that is the Philippines, you'll find the best traveling tip you need to use when among the smiling and talkative people of this tropical paradise. Did we say talkative? That's an understatement! Filipinos are the most bubbly and communicative and therefore caring and friendliest people in Southeast Asia. This former U.S. colony has adopted American vocabulary, accents and lifestyles more than any other country in the region. Filipinos are also the Asian leaders in abbreviations which liberally sprinkle their conversation ("my D.I. is in the C.R."). They are also masters of inventing new words--witty and amusing--for just about everything from food to the foibles and weaknesses of their fellow countrymen. To ensure that you, the foreign resident, fleeting visitor or armchair traveler, enjoy your stay in the Philippines, we present a light hearted but practical guide to the do's and don'ts of this dynamic country. DON'T tell your best friend that he's got food stuck between his teeth. DO slouch in the back of your taxi as you leave the motel after a romantic afternoon. And DON'T throw water over the guy downstairs singing his heart out. He's just serenading his ladylove on the fourth floor. Want to know more? Then DO buy this book!
