This book was released on 1977 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite severe disturbance caused by the construction of a British fort in the 19th-century, the area covered by the cloverleaf bastion and perhaps other areas of the fort at Coteau-du-Lac can be shown to have been occupied or used periodically for some 5,000 years. The presence of certain diagnostic artifacts permits the identification of at least four prehistoric occupations of the site: the Brewerton and probably the Vergonnes phases of the Laurentian tradation; another later Archaic manifestation represented by Lamoka points; a Middle Woodland occupation represented by Point Peninsula pottery and human remains; and a Late Woodland presence, poorly but surely in evidence due to five Iroquoian potsherds.

Download or read book The Ceramics of Lower Fort Garry written by Lynne Sussman and published by National Historic and Northern Affa. This book was released on 1979 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ceramics from Lower Fort Garry were retrieved from 31 operations, most of which represent individual structures. The variety of ceramic objects includes tableware, commercial containers, storage vessels, kitchen ware, flowerpots, decorative objects, dolls and toy dishes. The largest group, represented by the tableware, was manufactured in England and dates from ca. 1836 to the beginning of the 20th century. A large percentage of this pottery was made by the Spode/Copeland company of Staffordshire. With the exception of several commercial containers manufactured in England, the remainder of the collection is unmarked. On the basis of their function, decoration and manufacturing techniques, they are dated to the second half of the 19th century. Their country of origin is not known, though many of the decorative articles appear to be continental. All the pottery discussed in this report is believed to have been associated with the fort during its Hudson's Bay Company occupation.

Download or read book Clay Tobacco-pipes, with Particular Reference to the Bristol Industry written by Iain C. Walker and published by National Historic Parks and Sites Branch, Parks Canada. This book was released on 1977 with total page 1036 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study considers clay tobacco-pipe manufacture with specific reference to the industry in Bristol. As a background, the basic archaeological usefulness of clay pipes as a means to date sites is outlined, the introduction of tobacco to Europeans considered, and the various methods of tobacco-taking over the centuries examined. An extensive examination of clay-pipe manufacturing processes in France, The Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Great Britain and the US is made, along with a history of the pipe industry in most of these countries. The pipemaking industries in five centres; Liverpool, Chester, Glasgow, Montreal, and East London, are considered and related to the Bristol situation. Also considers production costs for clay pipes and wages earned by pipemakers. The origins, rise, decline, re-emergence, and final demise of the Bristol clay-pipe industry is examined in detail in the light of documentary and archaeological evidence. Trends are noted from the apprenticeship rolls, burgess books, poll-books, and trade directories and the interrelationships of the evidence are evaluated. Also considers the historical and socio-economic background of the ghetto of St. Jude's, a pipemaking area.

Centre, Supply and Services Canada. This book was released on 1979 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 19th-century glassware from the Roma site falls into nine major categories on the basis of function. In descending order of artifact concentration, these are: liquor bottles; medicinal bottles; miscellaneous glassware; perfume and cosmetic containers, and sauce bottles (equal quantities); lamp chimneys and mirrors (equal quantities); stoppers, and ink bottles. Approximately 100 identifiable objects are represented, the majority of which were excavated from the MacDonald store, although they do not necessarily date from its period of occupation. The collection is typical of the 19th century, and includes a cross-section of many of the types of utilitarian glasswares which were available at the same time and which could have been purchased at a general store. While some of the glassware may have been manufactured in Canada, it also appears to have been imported from the United States, England, and in one case, Scotland.
