Book excerpt: Using data collected in 2005 from the Higher Education Research Institute (HERI) at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), the study showed that when compared to their coeducated peers, graduates of girlsâ high schools had increased academic engagement; higher academic self-confidence, particularly in their math and science abilities; and greater political engagement. When reflecting on those results, we wondered: what differences would exist between girlsâ school graduates and their coeducated peers with data collected ten years later? The present report provides valuable insight into the experiences of students at all-girls schools, specifically relating to their academic skills and engagement, science confidence, community engagement, cultural competency, and political engagement. Commissioned by the National Coalition of Girlsâ Schools (NCGS), it follows the model of Sax et al. (2009), employing similar methodology and using data from HERIâs Freshman Survey, a national survey of students preparing to enter their first year of university. Collected in 2016, the dataset includes responses from 5,888 female incoming students, 1,134 of whom graduated from 105 independent all-girls high schools. In this report, we examine academic and social characteristics of these students and use multilevel modeling to understand how studentsâ demographic characteristics (e.g. race/ethnicity, parent education, and family income) and high school characteristics (e.g. student-teacher ratio, enrollment size, etc.) account for differences between the two groups. Considering the recommendations and following in the footsteps of previous research of its kind, this study identifies benefits and outcomes of all-girls schooling. [Introduction, ed]

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When it comes to motivating people to learn, disadvantaged urban adolescents are usually perceived as a hard sell. Yet, in a recent MetLife survey, 89 percent of the low-income students claimed "I really want to learn" applied to them. What is it about the school environmentâ€"pedagogy, curriculum, climate, organizationâ€"that encourages or discourages engagement in school activities? How do peers, family, and community affect adolescents' attitudes towards learning? Engaging Schools reviews current research on what shapes adolescents' school engagement and motivation to learnâ€"including new findings on students' sense of belongingâ€"and looks at ways these can be used to reform urban high schools. This book discusses what changes hold the greatest promise for increasing students' motivation to learn in these schools. It looks at various approaches to reform through different methods of instruction and assessment, adjustments in school size, vocational teaching, and other key areas. Examples of innovative schools, classrooms, and out-of-school programs that have proved successful in getting high school kids excited about learning are also included.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents and examines key issues not only on addressing changing student demographics and needs but also on aligning institutional and student expectations, connecting student-oriented services systemically, organizing and fostering student services for learning, and creating and delivering services for students to achieve success on campus. While the essential supportive role student services plays in student retention and success is generally understood, this book provides several constructive approaches and key indicators that service providers can use to challenge their campuses for better results in achieving student success. While this book does not define what student success is for all institutions or suggest that one size fits all institutions, it does emphasize that student learning and achieving student success on campus is everyone’s business. The chapter contributors share their wisdom on and experience in creating a student-centered culture and emphasize student services as the primary approach for putting students first in the campus community. Written for student service providers, academic departments, and others responsible for the support, direction, and coordination of services to students—vice presidents, deans, directors, and department chairs—readers will learn how to encourage a variety of desired outcomes, including student persistence, satisfaction, learning, and personal development. Also included is a systems perspective that will help readers evaluate and align services for students with the goals of both the students and the institution.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Co-published with and Students need more than just academic skills for success in college and career, and the lack of an explicit instructional focus on the “soft skills” critical to postsecondary success poses a challenge for many students who enter college, especially the underprepared. Based upon a multi-campus, cross-disciplinary collaboration, this book presents the resulting set of habits-of-mind-based strategies that demonstrably help not only low-income, ESL, and first-generation college students overcome obstacles on the path to degree completion; these strategies equally benefit all students. They promote life-long, integrative learning and foster intellectual qualities such as curiosity, openness, flexibility, engagement, and persistence that are the key to developing internalized and transferrable competencies that are seldom given direct attention in college classrooms. This contributed volume, written with full-time and adjunct faculty in mind, provides the rationale for this pedagogical approach and presents the sequential instructional cycle that begins by identifying students’ assets and progressively focusing on specific habits to develop their capacity to transfer their learning to new tasks and situations.Faculty from both two-year and four-year colleges provide examples of how they implement these practices in English, math, and General Education courses, and demonstrate the applicability of these practices across course types and disciplines.Chapters address key factors of college success, including:* The link between habits of mind and student retention and achievement* Using an assets-based approach to teaching and learning* Supporting and engaging students* Creating inclusive learning communities* Building confidence and self-efficacy* Promoting transfer of learning* Teacher networks and cross-disciplinary collaborationBy foregrounding habits of mind as an instructional lens, this book makes a unique contribution to teaching in developmental and general education settings.

This book was released on 2012-02-23 with total page 839 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than two decades, the concept of student engagement has grown from simple attention in class to a construct comprised of cognitive, emotional, and behavioral components that embody and further develop motivation for learning. Similarly, the goals of student engagement have evolved from dropout prevention to improved outcomes for lifelong learning. This robust expansion has led to numerous lines of research across disciplines and are brought together clearly and comprehensively in the Handbook of Research on Student Engagement. The Handbook guides readers through the field’s rich history, sorts out its component constructs, and identifies knowledge gaps to be filled by future research. Grounding data in real-world learning situations, contributors analyze indicators and facilitators of student engagement, link engagement to motivation, and gauge the impact of family, peers, and teachers on engagement in elementary and secondary grades. Findings on the effectiveness of classroom interventions are discussed in detail. And because assessing engagement is still a relatively new endeavor, chapters on measurement methods and issues round out this important resource. Topical areas addressed in the Handbook include: Engagement across developmental stages. Self-efficacy in the engaged learner. Parental and social influences on engagement and achievement motivation. The engaging nature of teaching for competency development. The relationship between engagement and high-risk behavior in adolescents. Comparing methods for measuring student engagement. An essential guide to the expanding knowledge base, the Handbook of Research on Student Engagement serves as a valuable resource for researchers, scientist-practitioners, and graduate students in such varied fields as clinical child and school psychology, educational psychology, public health, teaching and teacher education, social work, and educational policy.

Book Synopsis Beyond Benchmarks by : Mae Susanne Chaplin
Download or read book Beyond Benchmarks written by Mae Susanne Chaplin and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The continued loss of academic engagement within marginalized student populations leads to a real and pressing need for curriculum grounded in multicultural pedagogy, social justice, and equity. A multicultural curriculum was developed for implementation with a group of 63 gth grade students typically defined as "at-risk" by their school district. All of the participants in this study were two or more years below grade-level according to their English Language Arts performance on their ih grade California Standards Tests, and 48 of these participants were further categorized as English Language Learners. Throughout the course of a two-week unit of study in American History, the 63 students were monitored through the use of pre and post tests, reflective journals, informal interviews, and class-work to determine the influences a multicultural curriculum would have on their behavior, academic performance, and attitudes. It was discovered that students were not only more engaged with the curriculum after the implementation of the multicultural unit, but they were more academically successful and well-behaved as well. These findings further support the idea that systemic change in American education is necessary in order to foster academic engagement in marginalized student populations. Additionally, these findings call for a broader use of educational policies and practices geared to promote the ideals of social justice and equity throughout other content areas and curriculum. KEYWORDS: academic engagement, English Language Learners, marginalized, multicultural curriculum, social justice and equity

This book was released on 2020-01-18 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Healthy mental, emotional, and behavioral (MEB) development is a critical foundation for a productive adulthood. Much is known about strategies to support families and communities in strengthening the MEB development of children and youth, by promoting healthy development and also by preventing and mitigating disorder, so that young people reach adulthood ready to thrive and contribute to society. Over the last decade, a growing body of research has significantly strengthened understanding of healthy MEB development and the factors that influence it, as well as how it can be fostered. Yet, the United States has not taken full advantage of this growing knowledge base. Ten years later, the nation still is not effectively mitigating risks for poor MEB health outcomes; these risks remain prevalent, and available data show no significant reductions in their prevalence. Fostering Healthy Mental, Emotional, and Behavioral Development in Children and Youth: A National Agenda examines the gap between current research and achievable national goals for the next ten years. This report identifies the complexities of childhood influences and highlights the need for a tailored approach when implementing new policies and practices. This report provides a framework for a cohesive, multidisciplinary national approach to improving MEB health.
