Download or read book The Profession and Practice of Adult Education written by Sharan B. Merriam and published by Jossey-Bass. This book was released on 1997 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book fills the gap for a comprehensive, authoritative introduction to the field of adult and continuing education. Two of the most respected authors in the field, Sharan B. Merriam and Ralph G. Brockett, provide an insightful analysis of this rapidly developing field and a thorough grounding in its guiding concepts, purposes, and practices of programs. Comprehensive in scope, The Profession and Practice of Adult Education, offers a philosophical overview of adult education, clearly defines the field and its development, reviews goals and purposes, outlines the delivery of programs by agencies and organizations, examines major concepts and trAnds, and presents a vision for the future.Merriam and Brockett examine the role professional associations, literature and information resources, and the academic preparation of adult educators play in the ongoing professionalization of the field. They explore such critical questions as What are the objectives to achieving unity in a field as diverse as adult education?, and Are there advantages for adult education aligning itself more closely with education? Should the primary focus be on the individual or society? The authors take a broader global perspective on the troublesome issue of opportunity, access, and participation. The authors explore the area of adult education outside the mainstream of practice by examining who nontraditional educators are and what they do. They place special emphasis on social change as an objective of adult education. The book also touches on adult education as a forum for the international exchange of ideas and experiences and reveals what the field is like in other parts of the world. In the concluding chapter, Merriam and Brockett offer a vision of the future of adult education for the next millennium.
Book Synopsis The National Education Goals Report by : United States. National Education Goals Panel
Download or read book The National Education Goals Report written by United States. National Education Goals Panel and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document, one of four volumes comprising the 1995 Goals Report, is the fifth in a series of annual reports. This core report for 1995 focuses on approximately two dozen indicators that show the progress made by the United States toward the National Education Goals. National performance has improved in five areas, gotten worse in seven, and, in eight areas, no significant changes in national performance have occurred. Progress has occurred in the areas of student readiness and mathematics achievement; participation in Advanced Placement examinations such as English, mathematics, science, and history; and early prenatal care. However, there has been some decline in the area of providing safe environments conducive to learning. The report focuses on the essential role that families play in helping to achieve the National Education Goals and suggests ways in which schools can involve them in partnerships. State and national progress on the core indicators is presented in detail. Twenty-five figures and eight tables as well as the 1995 National Education Goals Report Questionnaire are included. Appendices contain technical notes and a list of the National Education Goals panel staff. (LMI)
