Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As an approach to the diverse and shifting learning needs of today, the learning society labours under a definitional generosity which has led to three different models evolving with competing claims. This book traces the history of the concept and lucidly lays out these three interpretive models: learning for work, learning for citizenship and learning for democracy. The book's close scrutiny concludes with an analysis that synthesizes and sharpens our understanding of the learning society. With due consideration given to the emerging critique and with chapters from public bodies engaged in implementing learning society principles, Inside the Learning Society offers a comprehensive appraisal of ideas and practices. This is a book of great significance for anyone concerned about or involved in the future of education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is for every teacher or trainer-- whose computer skills may be limited-- who wants to understand the Internet educationally, and use it in his or her courses. As institutional pressures mount to integrate the Internet into teaching, this book provides a framework and a hands-on introduction to what's involved, whether it's adapting materials and teaching styles for the Web, or designing a virtual course. This book provides: + an introduction to the key educational concepts needed to adapt teaching methods and materials to the medium of the Internet + an introduction to both basic and advanced Internet skills-from using e-mail to collaborative conferencing + a framework for harnessing the Internet to achieve educational goals, and successfully exploiting its resources, features and applications to promote effective learning The framework starts from the premise that teachers should progressively apply Internet technology as their skills and confidence develop. It develops the concept of "augmented" teaching styles-supplementing traditional teaching with Intenet based options; demonstrates how to use modules as the building blocks for Web-based learning; and shows how to use the Internet to deliver individualized learning, by enhancing personal communication between teacher and student, and addressing the diversity of learning styles. The book abounds with inspiring and thought-provoking examples of Internet course materials developed by a wide variety of teachers and trainers, including modules and forms created by the authors who have extensive experience in delivering Internet-based courses. A glossary of terms and directory of Internet sites and resources complete the book, which is also supported by a related Web site.

Book excerpt: A Journey Called Aging presents an insightful exploration of the years between the entry into older adulthood and death. This text examines the significant changes and major landmarks of older persons between 60 and 90. Grounded by a developmental framework based on empirical research, this book presents a new way of looking at older adulthood, describing the older adult years in intensely human terms through both anecdotes and research-based findings to engage the reader as both guide and traveler. Using a series of sequential stages as a framework, A Journey Called Aging discusses the experiences of older adults addressing the challenges and opportunities presented at each stage. This clear analysis can be used as a guide to help persons plan their own odyssey through the older years. Topics in A Journey Called Aging include: research and results of the study entering older adulthood the long stable stage of Extended Middle Age Early Transition Older Adult Lifestyle Later Transition the stable stage near the end of life the final transition A Journey Called Aging is crucial reading for professionals who work with older adults, including pastors, attorneys, facilities managers, and program directors; gerontology educators and students; and older adults themselves, their families, and those who care for and about them.

National Advisory Council on Extension and Continuing Education and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report points out that the U.S. is virtually alone among industrialized countries in having no officially recognized body through which a dialog can be sustained on adult education matters. Furthermore, the delivery system is too often prevented from delivering needed services by its near-total dependence on tuition income. Activities of the National Advisory Council speak to these and other national issues, describing public hearings, meetings with concerned officials and representatives, and recommendations for action. The report recommends to the President that the Executive Branch activate its leadership potential in educational planning, policy, and program development for the unserved and underserved adult learner; expand the scope of NIE (National Institute of Education) research activities; and encourage ICA (International Communications Agency) support for adult and continuing education. The Congress is requested to reauthorize Title 1 of the Higher Education Act to improve ways of meeting adult learning needs. Congress, the report emphasizes, should find ways to encourage and support those who are unable to study full-time and who are discriminated against economically. Appendixes include an executive summary and discussion of federal policies for postsecondary continuing education, an analysis of the current federal role in support of such education, and a summary of public hearings on Title 1. (CP).
