Book Synopsis Shakespeare and the Authorship of the Sonnets by : Dennis Hirsch
Download or read book Shakespeare and the Authorship of the Sonnets written by Dennis Hirsch and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2024-02-28 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The persona of Edward de Vere represents a contrast to the canonical, Stratfordian image of Shakespeare. His adulterous affair with a teenage girl half his age, his complicity in acts of treason against Queen Elizabeth, and the bankruptcy of his earldom due to his lavish spending all combine to paint a picture of a man contrary to the Stratfordian ideal. However, it is this unattractive portrayal of him that supports the argument that de Vere wrote the sonnets, since the sonnets themselves offer up underlying messages of ridicule, deception, avarice, and sexual obsession that doggedly champion the author's own best interests above others. This work presents an Oxfordian reading of the sonnets and the problematic life of Edward de Vere, the 17th Earl of Oxford.

Book Synopsis Poetry and Paternity in Renaissance England by : Tom MacFaul
Download or read book Poetry and Paternity in Renaissance England written by Tom MacFaul and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-06-17 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Becoming a father was the main way that an individual in the English Renaissance could be treated as a full member of the community. Yet patriarchal identity was by no means as secure as is often assumed: when poets invoke the idea of paternity in love poetry and other forms, they are therefore invoking all the anxieties that a culture with contradictory notions of sexuality imposed. This study takes these anxieties seriously, arguing that writers such as Sidney and Spenser deployed images of childbirth to harmonize public and private spheres, to develop a full sense of selfhood in their verse, and even to come to new accommodations between the sexes. Shakespeare, Donne and Jonson, in turn, saw the appeal of the older poets' aims, but resisted their more radical implications. The result is a fiercely personal yet publicly-committed poetry that wouldn't be seen again until the time of the Romantics.

Book Synopsis The Sonnets and Narrative Poems of William Shakespeare by : William Shakespeare
Download or read book The Sonnets and Narrative Poems of William Shakespeare written by William Shakespeare and published by Everyman's Library. This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If William Shakespeare had never written a single play, if his reputation rested entirely upon the substantial and sterling body of nondramatic verse he left behind, he would still hold the position he does in the hierarchy of world literature. The strikingly modern sonnets–intimate, baroque, and expansive at once; the invigorating narratives drawn from classical subjects; and the flawless lyricism represented by a poem like “The Phoenix and the Turtle”–permanently deepen our understanding of the multiplicity and extravagant energy of our greatest poet.
