Book excerpt: Y focusing on the life and work of Fortunato Depero (Fondo, Trento, 1892 – Rovereto, 1960) it will aim to offer a new assessment of what has been termed "the Avant-garde of avant-gardes": Italian Futurism.0This visual and literary movement, which was launched with the Manifesto published by Filippo Tommaso Marinetti on 20 February 1909 in the French newspaper Le Figaro, has found its place in history due to the radical nature of its ideas: abolishing all references to the art of the past (considered to be pure "passatismo"), exalting dynamism, the machine, speed and war, freeing words from grammatical structure and multiplying viewpoints in order to express the dynamic interaction of the material with the surrounding space. 0During its most active years, between 1909 and 1915, Futurism made an innovative and dynamic contribution to European visual art and literature. The outbreak of World War I resulted in a break in its activities with many of the Futurists participating in the combat and the death of Boccioni. Prior to this, in 1913, Fortunato Depero went to Rome where he met Marinetti and visited the exhibition on Boccioni at the Galleria Sprovieri. His encounter there with the work of Boccioni and Balla led to a transformation in his artistic output as he assimilated Boccioni’s visual dynamism and Balla’s sense of tension deriving from the abstraction of forms. In the spring of 1915 Depero joined the Futurist movement.0Exhibition: Fundación Juan March, Madrid, Spain (10.10.2014-18.01.2015).

Book excerpt: Italian futurist Fortunato Depero's 1927 'Deperio Futurista' is universally recognized as a landmark avant-garde example of the 'book as object'. Filled with bold typographic experimentation, daring layouts and featuring work in nearly artistic medium, it is widely known as 'The Bolted Book' because it is famously bound together by two large industrial aluminum bolts.0This new edition is the first exact copy of Depero's groundbreaking monograph produced since its original publication ninety years ago. This exact facsimile - featuring five types of paper and meticulously recreated bolts - includes a wealth of Depero's influential paintings, sculptures, textile and architectural designs - any or all of which can be removed and displayed as individual pieces of art. The accompanying Reader's Guide explores the extraordinary legacy of the project, setting the book in its proper context and making it available as a source of inspiration for a new generation.

Book excerpt: During the post-war years Fortunato Depero was one of the key figures of the second Futurist movement, not only in the field of painting but also in graphics, stage sets, the applied arts and experimental writing. This catalogue of the American exhibition, one of the most thorough and up-to-date monographs of the eclectic Italian Futurist artist, is arranged in four sections: The Avant-garde Period 1914-1917 (Plastic Complexes, We Abstract Futurists, Synthetic Architectural Forms), The Aesthetics of Magic 1917-1927 (The Automaton and the Picto-plastic Drama, The New Fantastic), The Magician's House 1919-1927 (The House of Futurist Art. International Exhibitions, Graphic Design), America, America 1928-1932 and more (Metropolitan Visions, Advertising, America Again). A definitive picture of Depero's long career, raging from the early days, to the important Futurist period of the "Casa del Mago"/The Wizard's House (the studio-laboratory created by the artist at Roverero during the time of his enthusiastic participation in the Futurist movement), until the New York period in the thirties, when he was active in costumes, sets and important drawings on urban-industrial themes.
Book Synopsis The Visible Word by : Johanna Drucker
Download or read book The Visible Word written by Johanna Drucker and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drucker skillfully traces the development of this critical position, suggesting a methodology closer to the actual practices of the early avant-garde artists based on a rereading of their critical and theoretical writings. After reviewing theories of signification, the production of meaning, and materiality, she analyzes the work of four poets active in the typographic experimentation of the 1910s and 1920s: Ilia Zdanevich, Filippo Marinetti, Guillaume Apollinaire, and Tristan Tzara. Drucker explores the context for experimental typography in terms of printing, handwriting, and other practices concerned with the visual representation of language. Her book concludes with a brief look at the ways in which experimental techniques of the early avant-garde were transformed in both literary work and in applications to commercial design throughout the 1920s and early 1930s.

Book Synopsis Fascist Spectacle by : Simonetta Falasca-Zamponi
Download or read book Fascist Spectacle written by Simonetta Falasca-Zamponi and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-09-01 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This richly textured cultural history of Italian fascism traces the narrative path that accompanied the making of the regime and the construction of Mussolini's power. Simonetta Falasca-Zamponi reads fascist myths, rituals, images, and speeches as texts that tell the story of fascism. Linking Mussolini's elaboration of a new ruling style to the shaping of the regime's identity, she finds that in searching for symbolic means and forms that would represent its political novelty, fascism in fact brought itself into being, creating its own power and history. Falasca-Zamponi argues that an aesthetically founded notion of politics guided fascist power's historical unfolding and determined the fascist regime's violent understanding of social relations, its desensitized and dehumanized claims to creation, its privileging of form over ethical norms, and ultimately its truly totalitarian nature.
