The author argues that the best solution for clarifying the attainable bound of the error and disturbance is to invoke the estimation process from the measurement outcomes such as signals from a photodetector in a quantum optical system. The error and disturbance in terms of the Fisher information content have been successfully formulated and provide the upper bound of the accuracy of the estimation. Moreover, the attainable bound of the error and disturbance in quantum measurement has been derived. The obtained bound is determined for the first time by the quantum fluctuations and correlation functions of the observables, which characterize the non-classical fluctuation of the observables. The result provides the upper bound of our knowledge obtained by quantum measurements. The method developed in this thesis will be applied to a broad class of problems related to quantum measurement to build a next-generation clock standard and to successfully detect gravitational waves.

The nature of quantum measurement has become understood much bet ter during this new period of activity, the understanding being expressed by the concept of decoherence. This term means a physical process lead ing from a pure quantum state (wave function) of the system prior to the measurement to its state after the measurement which includes classical elements. More concretely, decoherence occurs as a result of the entangle ment of the measured system with its environment and results in the loss of phase relations between components of the wave function of the measured system. Decoherence is essentially nothing else than quantum measurement, but considered from the point of view of its physical mechanism and resolved in time. The present book is devoted to the two concepts of quantum measure ment and decoherence and to their interrelation, especially in the context of continuous quantum measurement.

The position fluctuations of the oscillator—a glass nanostring—are measured with an imprecision that is sufficient to resolve its quantum zero-point motion within its thermal decoherence time. The concomitant observation of measurement back-action, in accordance with Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle, verifies the principles of linear quantum measurements on a macroscopic mechanical object. The record of the measurement is used to perform feedback control so as to suppress both classical thermal motion and quantum measurement back-action. These results verify some of the central and long-standing predictions of quantum measurement theory applied to a macroscopic object. The act of measurement not only perturbs the subject of the measurement—the mechanical oscillator—but also changes the state of the light used to make the measurement. This prediction is verified by demonstrating that the optical field, after having interacted with the mechanical oscillator, contains quantum correlations that render its quadrature fluctuations smaller than those of the vacuum – i.e., the light is squeezed. Lastly, the thesis reports on some of the first feedback control experiments involving macroscopic objects in the quantum regime, together with an exploration of the quantum limit of feedback control. The book offers a pedagogical account of linear measurement theory, its realization via optical interferometry, and contains a detailed guide to precision optical interferometry..

Book excerpt: Quantum measurement invasiveness is a feature of quantum phenomena, i.e. associated with the fact that measurements can affect quantum systems in a manner which cannot be described by classical physics. In this thesis we will investigate measurement invasiveness through the Leggett-Garg inequality and another inequality based on the non-disturbance condition, both of which, when violated, witness measurement invasiveness. First, we will study a model for the violation of the Leggett-Garg inequality, which will allow us to provide an operational characterization of measurement invasiveness through a parameter called the measurability of the physical system. This parameter controls Leggett-Garg inequality violation and can be associated with experimental tests of this inequality, helping one to understand and interpret them. We will also investigate, through this model, the relationship between measurement invasiveness and a specific definition of macroscopicity, related to the \size" of spin systems. We will then seek to study an application of measurement invasiveness in the context of protocols for parameter estimation or quantum metrology. A general relationship between the Fisher information and temporal quantum correlations will be established, allowing one to characterize the robustness of metrological scenarios against the presence of noise. This relationship will also serve as a guideline for a connection between measurement invasiveness and (nearly-) optimal metrological scenarios. We will also establish a relationship between measurement invasiveness and a definition of a measure of macroscopic coherence. Lastly, we will propose a protocol for testing measurement noninvasiness based on the non-disturbance condition for spin systems of arbitrary size. This inequality allows one to argue against the possibility of its violation being due to the classical disturbance of measurements. We will show that the maximum value for the violation of this inequality Corresponds to the number of particles which constitutes the system.

In addition to the traditional quantum mechanical paradoxes, concerning the quantum theory of measurement, the book also discusses the new difficulties that the physics of chaos is causing to the widely accepted correspondence principle, and suggests that the Boltzmann dream, the dream that the fracture between dynamics and thermodynamics might be healed, cannot become true within the framework of the current physics, and that the establishment of a new physics is necessary for that ambitious purpose to be achieved.
