Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theory of turbulence in an incompressible fluid is formulated using methods similar to those of quantum field theory. A systematic perturbation theory is set up, and the terms in the perturbation series are shown to be in one to one correspondence with certain diagrams analogous to Feynman diagrams. From a study of the diagrams it is shown that the perturbation series can be rearranged and partially summed in such a way as to reduce the problem to the solution of three simultaneous integral equations for three functions, one of which is the second order velocity correlation function. The equations have the form of infinite power series integral equations, and the first few terms in the power series are derived from an analysis of the diagrams to sixth order. Truncation of the integral equations at the lowest nontrivial order yields Chandrasekhar's equation, and truncation at a higher order yields the equations discussed by Kraichnan. (Author).

Book excerpt: The spontaneous formation of well organized structures out of germs or even out of chaos is one of the most fascinating phenomena and most challenging problems scientists are confronted with. Such phenomena are an experience of our daily life when we observe the growth of plants and animals. Thinking of much larger time scales, scientists are led into the problems of evolution, and, ultimately, of the origin of living matter. When we try to explain or understand in some sense these extremely complex biological phenomena it is a natural question, whether pro cesses of self-organization may be found in much simpler systems of the un animated world. In recent years it has become more and more evident that there exist numerous examples in physical and chemical systems where well organized spatial, temporal, or spatio-temporal structures arise out of chaotic states. Furthermore, as in living of these systems can be maintained only by a flux of organisms, the functioning energy (and matter) through them. In contrast to man-made machines, which are to exhibit special structures and functionings, these structures develop spon devised It came as a surprise to many scientists that taneously-they are self-organizing. numerous such systems show striking similarities in their behavior when passing from the disordered to the ordered state. This strongly indicates that the function of such systems obeys the same basic principles. In our book we wish to explain ing such basic principles and underlying conceptions and to present the mathematical tools to cope with them.
Book Synopsis The Theory of Homogeneous Turbulence by : G. K. Batchelor
Download or read book The Theory of Homogeneous Turbulence written by G. K. Batchelor and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1953 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a reissue of Professor Batchelor's text on the theory of turbulent motion, which was first published by Cambridge Unviersity Press in 1953. It continues to be widely referred to in the professional literature of fluid mechanics, but has not been available for several years. This classic account includes an introduction to the study of homogeneous turbulence, including its mathematic representation and kinematics. Linear problems, such as the randomly-perturbed harmonic oscillator and turbulent flow through a wire gauze, are then treated. The author also presents the general dynamics of decay, universal equilibrium theory, and the decay of energy-containing eddies. There is a renewed interest in turbulent motion, which finds applications in atmospheric physics, fluid mechanics, astrophysics, and planetary science.

Download or read book Navier-Stokes Turbulence written by Wolfgang Kollmann and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2024 with total page 848 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This updated/augmented second edition retains it class-tested content and pedagogy as a core text for graduate courses in advanced fluid mechanics and applied science. The new edition adds revised sections, clarification, problems, and chapter extensions including a rewritten section on Schauder bases for turbulent pipe flow, coverage of Cantwell’s mixing length closure for turbulent pipe flow, and a section on the variational Hessian. Consisting of two parts, the first provides an introduction and general theory of fully developed turbulence, where treatment of turbulence is based on the linear functional equation derived by E. Hopf governing the characteristic functional that determines the statistical properties of a turbulent flow. In this section, Professor Kollmann explains how the theory is built on divergence free Schauder bases for the phase space of the turbulent flow and the space of argument vector fields for the characteristic functional. The second segment, presented over subsequent chapters, is devoted to mapping methods, homogeneous turbulence based upon the hypotheses of Kolmogorov and Onsager, intermittency, structural features of turbulent shear flows and their recognition. Adds section on Plancherel’s theorem and a detailed problem on analytic solution of functional differential equations; Extends chapter nine on characteristic functionals to greater explain the role of convection; Reinforces concepts with problems on the theory and particular examples of turbulent flows such as periodic pipe flow. . .

Book Synopsis Theories of Turbulence by : Martin Oberlack
Download or read book Theories of Turbulence written by Martin Oberlack and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-05-04 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term "turbulence” is used for a large variety of dynamical phenomena of fluids in motion whenever the details of the flow appear to be random and average properties are of primary interest. Just as wide ranging are the theoretical methods that have been applied towards a better understanding of fluid turbulence. In this book a number of these methods are described and applied to a broad range of problems from the transition to turbulence to asymptotic turbulence when the inertial part of the spectrum is fully developed. Statistical as well as nonstatistical treatments are presented, but a complete coverage of the subject is not attempted. The book will be of interest to scientists and engineers who wish to familiarize themselves with modern developments in theories of turbulence. The fact that the properties of turbulent fluid flow are addressed from very different points of view makes this volume rather unique among presently available books on turbulence.
Book Synopsis A New Hypothesis on the Anisotropic Reynolds Stress Tensor for Turbulent Flows by : László Könözsy
Download or read book A New Hypothesis on the Anisotropic Reynolds Stress Tensor for Turbulent Flows written by László Könözsy and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-02-26 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives a mathematical insight--including intermediate derivation steps--into engineering physics and turbulence modeling related to an anisotropic modification to the Boussinesq hypothesis (deformation theory) coupled with the similarity theory of velocity fluctuations. Through mathematical derivations and their explanations, the reader will be able to understand new theoretical concepts quickly, including how to put a new hypothesis on the anisotropic Reynolds stress tensor into engineering practice. The anisotropic modification to the eddy viscosity hypothesis is in the center of research interest, however, the unification of the deformation theory and the anisotropic similarity theory of turbulent velocity fluctuations is still missing from the literature. This book brings a mathematically challenging subject closer to graduate students and researchers who are developing the next generation of anisotropic turbulence models. Indispensable for graduate students, researchers and scientists in fluid mechanics and mechanical engineering.
