Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The material presented in this book has been compiled for the convenience of the reader. The aim of the book is to provide a handy source of formulas, conversion factors and constants for everyday use. The formulas and tables are amended by examples in all of those cases where their use is not self explanatory. The material has been selected to be helpful whenever it is inconvenient or not possible to consult tables available at the library. Section 1 provides the fundamental tools of mathematics needed in all areas of the physical sciences. Section 2 summarizes the SI system, lists conversion factors and provides precise values of fundamental constants. Sections 3 and 4 review the basic terms of spectroscopy, atomic structure and wave mechan ics. These sections serve as a guide to the interpretation of modern literature. Section 5 is a resource for work in the laboratory. Data and formulas are given to be of assistance in the use of frequently encountered equipment such as vacuum systems and electronic devices. Material constants and other data are listed for information and as an aid for estimates or problem solving. The assistance of the Springer-Verlag during the various stages of the development of this book is gratefully acknowl edged. The authors like to thank Dr. F. L. Boschke for his many helpful suggestions. Helmut J. Fischbeck Kurt H. Fischbeck Contents Basic mathematical facts and figures ............................... .

Book excerpt: Have you ever wondered how Einstein, a regular man, can come up with radical ideas that shape the world to be what it is today?Albert Einstein is a familiar name to many in the scientific and non-scientific community due to his revolutionary ideas such as the Theory of Relativity, Special Relativity and significant contributions to the development of Quantum Mechanics. As such, many aspire to be like him and wonder how they can do that. The author believes that one needs to condition his/her mind to be able to think like the world-renowned Mathematical Physicist, Albert Einstein. The road to being successful can be challenging and it requires grit, confidence and guidance from the right people. Hence, this book is as a must-have guide to readers who wish to be one of the best scientists in the world!Related Link(s)

Book excerpt: The 2009 International Symposium on Rule Interchange and Applications (RuleML 2009), collocated in Las Vegas, Nevada, with the 12th International Business Rules Forum, was the premier place to meet and to exchange ideas from all ?elds of rules technologies. The aims of RuleML 2009 were both to present new and interesting research results and to show successfully deployed rule-basedapplications.This annualsymposium is the ?agshipevent of the Rule Markup and Modeling Initiative (RuleML). The RuleML Initiative (www.ruleml.org) is a non-pro?t umbrella organi- tion of several technical groups organized by representatives from academia, industry and public sectors working on rule technologies and applications. Its aim is to promote the study, research and application of rules in heterogeneous distributed environments such as the Web. RuleML maintains e?ective links with other major international societies and acts as intermediary between v- ious ‘specialized’ rule vendors, applications, industrial and academic research groups, as well as standardization e?orts from, for example, W3C, OMG, and OASIS. To emphasize the importance of rule standards RuleML 2009 featured, besides a number of tutorials on various rule aspects, a tutorial and a workshop dedicated to the newly released W3C Rule Interchange Format (RIF).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Query reformulation refers to a process of translating a source query—a request for information in some high-level logic-based language—into a target plan that abides by certain interface restrictions. Many practical problems in data management can be seen as instances of the reformulation problem. For example, the problem of translating an SQL query written over a set of base tables into another query written over a set of views; the problem of implementing a query via translating to a program calling a set of database APIs; the problem of implementing a query using a collection of web services. In this book we approach query reformulation in a very general setting that encompasses all the problems above, by relating it to a line of research within mathematical logic. For many decades logicians have looked at the problem of converting "implicit definitions" into "explicit definitions," using an approach known as interpolation. We will review the theory of interpolation, and explain its close connection with query reformulation. We will give a detailed look at how the interpolation-based approach is used to generate translations between logic-based queries over different vocabularies, and also how it can be used to go from logic-based queries to programs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do we recognize that the number . 93371663 . . . is actually 2 IoglQ(e + 7r)/2 ? Gauss observed that the number 1. 85407467 . . . is (essentially) a rational value of an elliptic integral-an observation that was critical in the development of nineteenth century analysis. How do we decide that such a number is actually a special value of a familiar function without the tools Gauss had at his disposal, which were, presumably, phenomenal insight and a prodigious memory? Part of the answer, we hope, lies in this volume. This book is structured like a reverse telephone book, or more accurately, like a reverse handbook of special function values. It is a list of just over 100,000 eight-digit real numbers in the interval [0,1) that arise as the first eight digits of special values of familiar functions. It is designed for people, like ourselves, who encounter various numbers computationally and want to know if these numbers have some simple form. This is not a particularly well-defined endeavor-every eight-digit number is rational and this is not interesting. However, the chances of an eight digit number agreeing with a small rational, say with numerator and denominator less than twenty-five, is small. Thus the list is comprised primarily of special function evaluations at various algebraic and simple transcendental values. The exact numbers included are described below. Each entry consists of the first eight digits after the decimal point of the number in question.

Book excerpt: Although numerical data are, in principle, universal, the compilations presented in this book are extensively annotated and interleaved with text. This translation of the second German edition has been prepared to facilitate the use of this work, with all its valuable detail, by the large community of English-speaking scientists. Translation has also provided an opportunity to correct and revise the text, and to update the nomenclature. Fortunately, spectroscopic data and their relationship with structure do not change much with time so one can predict that this book will, for a long period of time, continue to be very useful to organic chemists involved in the identification of organic compounds or the elucidation of their structure. Klaus Biemann Cambridge, MA, April 1983 Preface to the First German Edition Making use of the information provided by various spectroscopic tech niques has become a ·matter of routine for the analytically oriented organic chemist. Those who have graduated recently received extensive training in these techniques as part of the curriculum while their older colleagues learned to use these methods by necessity. One can, therefore, assume that chemists are well versed in the proper choice of the methods suitable for the solution of a particular problem and to translate the experimental data into structural information.

Book excerpt: In the mid-eighteenth century, Swiss-born mathematician Leonhard Euler developed a formula so innovative and complex that it continues to inspire research, discussion, and even the occasional limerick. Dr. Euler's Fabulous Formula shares the fascinating story of this groundbreaking formula—long regarded as the gold standard for mathematical beauty—and shows why it still lies at the heart of complex number theory. In some ways a sequel to Nahin's An Imaginary Tale, this book examines the many applications of complex numbers alongside intriguing stories from the history of mathematics. Dr. Euler's Fabulous Formula is accessible to any reader familiar with calculus and differential equations, and promises to inspire mathematicians for years to come.
