Book excerpt: "This document describes the proposed outcome of the re-evaluation of the herbicide (2,4-dichlorophenoxy)acetic acid, commonly known as 2,4-D, and its end-use products for non-turf use in Canada. This document follows and supplements a previous assessment of the turf uses of 2,4-D published in 2005. Both assessments considered the potential impact of 2,4-D on the health and safety of users and others incidentally exposed when these products are used as well as the potential environmental impact associated with using 2,4-D."--Document.

Download or read book Re-evaluation of S-ethyl Dipropylthiocarbamate (EPTC). written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: S-ethyl dipropylthiocarbamate (EPTC) is a thiocarbamate herbicide (resistance management group 8) that inhibits lipid synthesis (not acetyl CoA carboxylase inhibition). It works by systemic action. EPTC is registered for the control of a variety of annual grasses, broadleaf weeds and selected perennial weeds in terrestrial feed, food and oilseed crops and as a domestic class product for use in ornamentals in a residential setting. Health Canada's Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) is proposing that the use of EPTC and its end-use products is acceptable for continued registration with the implementation of additional mitigation measures to further protect workers, residents and the environment. This document summarizes the health and environmental risk assessments as well as the proposed mitigation measures resulting from the re-evaluation of EPTC. By way of this document, the PMRA is soliciting comments from interested parties on the proposed regulatory decision for EPTC.--Document.

Book Synopsis International Code of Conduct on Pesticide Management - Guidance on Pesticide Legislation - Second edition by : Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
Download or read book International Code of Conduct on Pesticide Management - Guidance on Pesticide Legislation - Second edition written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2020-10-09 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the guidelines is to provide guidance to governments that seek to review, update or design national pesticide legislation. It should be emphasized, however, that legislation alone cannot ensure effective pesticide management and adequate protection of the environment and public health. Governments will need to have in place the necessary institutional infrastructure for registering pesticides and enforcing legislation. Further, governments also need effective supporting policies and tools to promote sustainable pest and pesticide management. This may include promoting Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and Integrated Vector Management (IVM) through training programmes and incentive schemes, increasing availability and use of low risk products, fostering scientific research, carrying out public education campaigns and providing training for inspectors, retailers and professional users. A solid legislative framework should underpin the selected institutional framework, policies and tools. This document supersedes the Guidelines for Legislation on the Control of Pesticides of 1989.

This book was released on 2018-09-03 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The understanding that some pesticides are more hazardous than others is well established. Recognition of this is reflected by the World Health Organization (WHO) Recommended Classification of Pesticides by Hazard, which was first published in 1975. The document classifies pesticides in one of five hazard classes according to their acute toxicity. In 2002, the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS) was introduced, which in addition to acute toxicity also provides classification of chemicals according to their chronic health hazards and environmental hazards.

Book excerpt: "In May 2009, the Government of Canada, through the Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) of Health Canada, asked the Council of Canadian Academies to appoint an expert panel to answer the question, "What is the scientific status of the use of integrated testing strategies in the human and environmental regulatory risk assessment of pesticides?" The charge to the Panel was further specified in a series of sub-questions: [1] What is the state of the science of the tools and data sources associated with integrated testing strategies? [2] What is the current status of the use of integrated testing strategies for the risk assessment of pesticides, pharmaceuticals, industrial chemicals, and other chemical substances by regulatory agencies around the world? [3] Could there be potential impacts on the public's perception and confidence in regulatory risk assessment and risk management decisions for pesticides if integrated testing strategies were implemented?"--P. xiii-xiv.

Book Synopsis Regulation of Biological Control Agents by : Ralf-Udo Ehlers
Download or read book Regulation of Biological Control Agents written by Ralf-Udo Ehlers and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-02-03 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a comprehensive compilation of registration requirements necessary for authorisation of biological control agents (viruses, bacteria, fungi, active substances of natural origin and semiochemicals) in OECD countries. It also reviews data requirements for invertebrate agents (insect, mites and nematodes) and provides proposals for harmonisation of the regulation process and guidelines for completion of application forms. Based on results of the EU REBECA Policy Support Action, which gathered experts from academia, regulation authorities and industry, risks and benefits of the specific agents were reviewed and proposals for a more balanced registration process elaborated, including recommendations for acceleration of the authorisation process and discussions on trade-off effects and policy impacts. All these aspects are covered in detail in this book, which points the way forward for enhanced utilisation of biological control agents.
Book Synopsis Pesticide Policy and Politics in the European Union by : Emanuela Bozzini
Download or read book Pesticide Policy and Politics in the European Union written by Emanuela Bozzini and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-03-23 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the regulation of pesticides in the European Union in order to reveal the complex, controversial, and contested nature of an assessment system proudly declared by the EU to be ‘the strictest in the world’. The current regulatory framework is based on Regulation 1107/2009, which substantially reformed the previous system. The analysis describes the new criteria and procedures for the authorization of active substances to be used in the production of pesticides, traces the lengthy policy formulation process, and identifies factors that made policy change possible. Further, the book illustrates the current controversies that characterise the implementation of Regulation 1107/2009: the ban of pesticides harmful to pollinators, the renewal of the authorization of glyphosate, and the definition of criteria for the assessment of endocrine disruption. The author provides information on policy outcomes and highlights persisting shortcomings in the enforcement of EU regulation. This book will appeal to students and scholars from a variety of disciplines, including political science, political sociology, and public policy.

Pesticides play a vital role in crop protection, although their excessive use poses a potential health hazard and a threat to food security and human and environmental safety. This book overviews developments on pesticides and pests that are relevant to agriculture in the Indian sub-continent, Asia and the world at large. These topics impact free world trade both directly and indirectly. The volume brings together the latest information about chemical, botanical, biorational pesticides and bioagents, international specifications for pesticide formulations, pesticide-environment interaction, and amendments to prevent leaching losses of pesticides in soil, among other topics. The issues of pest resistance, herbicide resistant or tolerant crops, and the changing global climate are also addressed. This book is a valuable collection of chapters that will serve as a reference point for students, scientists, policy-makers and other stakeholders interested in pesticides and pest control.
