Book excerpt: Briefly reviews the basic principles of metal forming but major emphasis is on the latest developments in the design of metal-forming operations and tooling. Discusses the position of metal forming in manufacturing and considers a metal-forming process as a system consisting of several interacting variables. Includes an overall review and classification of all metal-forming processes. The fundamentals of plastic deformation - metal flow, flow stress of metals and yield criteria - are discussed, as are significant practical variables of metal- forming processes such as friction, temperatures and forming machines and their characteristics. Examines approximate methods of analyzing simple forming operations, then looks at massive forming processes such as closed-die forging, hot extrusion, cold forging/ extrusion, rolling and drawing (discussion includes the prediction of stresses and load in each process and applications of computer-aided techniques). Recent developments in metal-forming technology, including CAD/CAM for die design and manufacture, are discussed, and a review of the latest trends in metal flow analysis and simulations.

Book excerpt: Two accomplished metalsmiths, both with extensive teaching careers, have joined forces to provide a comprehensive survey of the ways to form sheet metal. The 256-page text covers a huge swath, from a basic dapped disk through synclasting, anticlasting and spiculums to a raised vessel. Along the way, special attention is given to anticlastic forming and the vocabulary first introduced by their mentor, Heikki Seppä. Creative Metal Forming includes 35 detailed exercises to explain the basics and as well as advanced nuances of each category. Metalsmiths Michael Good and Nancy Linkin have each contributed demonstrations of their forming techniques.

Book excerpt: Following the long tradition of the Schuler Company, the Metal For ming Handbook presents the scientific fundamentals of metal forming technology in a way which is both compact and easily understood. Thus, this book makes the theory and practice of this field accessible to teaching and practical implementation. The first Schuler "Metal Forming Handbook" was published in 1930. The last edition of 1966, already revised four times, was translated into a number of languages, and met with resounding approval around the globe. Over the last 30 years, the field of forming technology has been rad ically changed by a number of innovations. New forming techniques and extended product design possibilities have been developed and introduced. This Metal Forming Handbook has been fundamentally revised to take account of these technological changes. It is both a text book and a reference work whose initial chapters are concerned to pro vide a survey of the fundamental processes of forming technology and press design. The book then goes on to provide an in-depth study of the major fields of sheet metal forming, cutting, hydroforming and solid forming. A large number of relevant calculations offers state of the art solutions in the field of metal forming technology. In presenting tech nical explanations, particular emphasis was placed on easily under standable graphic visualization. All illustrations and diagrams were compiled using a standardized system of functionally oriented color codes with a view to aiding the reader's understanding.

Book excerpt: Results of presented of tests to determine the effect of brake forming in various tempers on the strength of Alclade 75S-T aluminum-alloy sheet in the direction parallel to the brake. The tensile and compressive strengths of Alclad 75S-T sheet, formed in the O and W tempers, were either increased or little affected as compared with those of similarly treated unformed material. When Alclad 75S-T sheet "as received" was formed, however, the tensile yield stress was reduced about 7 percent for the with-grain direction and 1 percent for the cross-grain direction, whereas the tensile ultimate and compressive yield strength stresses were increased somewhat. The elongation was always slightly reduced as a result of forming.

Book excerpt: The basic aim of the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on "New Trends in Nonlinear Dynamics and Pattern-Forming Phenomena: The Geometry of Nonequilibrium" was to bring together researchers from various areas of physics to review and explore new ideas regarding the organisation of systems driven far from equilibrium. Such systems are characterized by a close relationship between broken spatial and tempo ral symmetries. The main topics of interest included pattern formation in chemical systems, materials and convection, traveling waves in binary fluids and liquid crystals, defects and their role in the disorganisa tion of structures, spatio-temporal intermittency, instabilities and large-scale vortices in open flows, the mathematics of non-equilibrium systems, turbulence, and last but not least growth phenomena. Written contributions from participants have been grouped into chapters addressing these different areas. For additional clarity, the first chapter on pattern formation has been subdivided into sections. One of the main concerns was to focus on the unifying features between these diverse topics. The various scientific communities repre sented were encouraged to discuss and compare their approach so as to mutually benefit their respective fields. We hope that, to a large degree, these goals have been met and we thank all the participants for their efforts. The workshop was held in Cargese (Corsica, France) at the Institut d'Etudes Scientifiques from August 2nd to August 12th, 1988. We greatly thank Yves Pomeau and Daniel Walgraef who, as members of the organising committee, gave us valuable advice and encouragements.

Book excerpt: We study the spatially resolved properties of star-forming galaxies at redshift z 2 - 3 on scales 1 kpc using a combination of morphological and kinematic analyses in an effort to characterize the major mechanisms of galaxy formation in the young universe. Using a sample of 216 galaxies which have been spectroscopically confirmed to lie between redshifts z = 1.8 - 3.4 in the GOODS-N field we demonstrate that rest-UV morphology (as seen by the Hubble Space Telescope) is statistically uncorrelated with physical properties such as star formation rate and is therefore unable to support the hypothesis that the prevalence of irregular morphologies indicates a high major merger fraction. Further, we present a sample of 13 galaxies observed with the OSIRIS integral field spectrograph and the Keck laser-guide star adaptive optics system which demonstrate the prevalence of high velocity dispersions 80 km/s and generally little in the way of spatially resolved velocity gradients, inconsistent with favored rotating disk models. We discuss the implications of these results for galaxy formation models, including gas accretion via cold flows and gravitational instability of early gas-rich galactic disks. There is some evidence for a trend towards stronger rotational signatures in galaxies with more massive stellar populations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of virtual manufacturing has been developed in order to increase the industrial performances, being one of the most ef cient ways of reducing the m- ufacturing times and improving the quality of the products. Numerical simulation of metal forming processes, as a component of the virtual manufacturing process, has a very important contribution to the reduction of the lead time. The nite element method is currently the most widely used numerical procedure for s- ulating sheet metal forming processes. The accuracy of the simulation programs used in industry is in uenced by the constitutive models and the forming limit curves models incorporated in their structure. From the above discussion, we can distinguish a very strong connection between virtual manufacturing as a general concept, ?nite element method as a numerical analysis instrument and constitutive laws, aswellas forming limit curves as a speci city of the sheet metal forming processes. Consequently, the material modeling is strategic when models of reality have to be built. The book gives a synthetic presentation of the research performed in the eld of sheet metal forming simulation during more than 20 years by the members of three international teams: the Research Centre on Sheet Metal Forming—CERTETA (Technical University of Cluj-Napoca, Romania); AutoForm Company from Zürich, Switzerland and VOLVO automotive company from Sweden. The rst chapter presents an overview of different Finite Element (FE) formu- tions used for sheet metal forming simulation, now and in the past.
