Book excerpt: The results of a radiological survey of the former Haist property, Tonawanda, New York, are presented in this report. The property served as a repository for uranium ore tailings during the period 1944--46. It was released for unrestricted use following a survey conducted in 1958 by the Health and Safety Laboratory (HASL), operated then by the Atomic Energy Commission. The property is now owned by Ashland Oil, Inc., and is used for oil refining operations. The survey was undertaken to determine whether the present radiological status of the property is consistent with current radiation protection guidelines and to determine the extent of movement of radioactive residues from the property via natural means such as surface run-off. The survey included measurement of external gamma and surface beta-gamma radiation levels on and near the site; radium and uranium concentrations in the soil on the site; concentrations of radium, uranium, and thorium in water samples collected on the site and in the drainage paths between the site and the Niagara River; radium concentrations in mud samples taken from the drainage areas; and radon daughter levels in the only building on the site. The results indicate that the residues on the site do not pose an immediate health hazard, assuming that residues remain in place (except for normal drainage) and that the site continues to be used in the manner in which it is presently used. However, potential health hazards could result from some uses of the site. In particular, if buildings were to be constructed in certain areas on the site, significant concentrations of radon daughters could develop in these structures.

Book excerpt: The US Department of Energy (DOE) has implemented a program to decontaminate radioactively contaminated sites that were formerly utilized by the Manhattan Engineer District (MED) and/or the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) for activities that included handling of radioactive material. This program is referred to as the ''Formerly Utilized Sites Remedial Action Program'' (FUSRAP). Among these sites are Jones Chemical Laboratory, Ryerson Physical Laboratory, Kent Chemical Laboratory, and Eckhart Hall of The University of Chicago, Chicago, Illinois. Since 1977, the University of Chicago decontaminated Kent Chemical Laboratory as part of a facilities renovation program. All areas of Eckhart Hall, Ryerson Physical Laboratory, and Jones Chemical Laboratory that had been identified as contaminated in excess of current guidelines in the 1976-1977 surveys were decontaminated to levels where no contamination could be detected relative to natural backgrounds. All areas that required defacing to achieve this goal were restored to their original condition. The radiological evaluation of the sewer system, based primarily on the radiochemical analyses of sludge and water samples, indicated that the entire sewer system is potentially contaminated. While this evaluation was defined as part of this project, the decontamination of the sewer system was not included in the purview of this effort. The documentation included in this report substantiates the judgment that all contaminated areas identified in the earlier reports in the three structures included in the decontamination effort (Eckhart Hall, Ryerson Physical Laboratory, and Jones Chemical Laboratory) were cleaned to levels commensurate with release for unrestricted use.

Book excerpt: During the Manhattan Engineer District/Atomic Energy Commission (MED/AEC) Era, the building located at 1716 West Pershing Road, Chicago, Illinois, was used for storage of government materials. This building was referred to as the 39th Street Warehouse. Personnel involved with the facility recall that this building was used, at least in part, for storage of radioactive materials. Records indicate that some contaminated animal cages were stored outside behind the building. Records of survey performed in 1949 indicate that contamination was found in the building, the yard, and on equipment remaining in the building. These records indicate that contaminated items were removed, but no records concerning the decontamination of the building could be found. Due to the uncertainty of the decontamination of the facility, a radiation survey of the building was undertaken from July 11 to July 14, 1977. The purpose of this survey was to determine if any detectable contamination remains as a result of any MED/AEC occupancy. The survey results show that no radioactivity above background was detected throughout the Former GSA 39th Street Warehouse. Air sampling results indicate normal radon concentration levels. The results of the soil sample analysis show no elevated readings above the natural background levels present in the soil from this region.
