Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new volume, the third in Wiley-Scrivener's series on formation testing, reviews pressure transient interpretation and contamination analysis methods, providing numerous practical discussions and examples with rigorous formulations solved through exact, closed form, analytical solutions. This new volume in the "Formation Testing" series further develops new methods and processes that are being developed in the oil and gas industry. In the 1990s through 2000s, the author co-developed Halliburton's commercially successful GeoTapTM real-time LWD/MWD method for formation testing, and also a parallel method used by China Oilfield Services, which enabled the use of data taken at early times, in low mobility and large flowline volume environments, to support the important estimation of mobility, compressibility and pore pressure, which are necessary for flow economics and fluid contact boundaries analyses (This work was later extended through two Department of Energy Small Business Innovation Research awards.). While extremely significant, the effect of high pressures in the borehole could not be fully accounted for. The formation tester measures a combination of reservoir and mud pressure and cannot ascertain how much is attributed to unimportant borehole effects. The usual approach is "simply wait" until the effects dissipate, which may require hours, which imply high drilling and logging costs, plus increased risks in safety and tool loss. The author has now modeled this "supercharge" effect and developed a powerful mathematical algorithm that fully accounts for mud interations. In short, accurate predictions for mobility, compressibility and pore pressure can now be undertaken immediately after an interval is drilled without waiting. This groundbreaking new work is a must-have for any petroleum, reservoir, or mud engineer working in the industry, solving day-to-day problems that he or she encounters in the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first flight test phase of the NASA Dryden Flight Research Center Autonomous Formation Flight project has successfully demonstrated precision autonomous station-keeping of an F/A-18 research airplane with a second F/A-18 airplane. Blended inertial navigation system (INS) and global positioning system (GPS) measurements have been communicated across an air-to-air telemetry link and used to compute relative-position estimates. A precision research formation autopilot onboard the trailing airplane controls lateral and vertical spacing while the leading airplane operates under production autopilot control. Four research autopilot gain sets have been designed and flight-tested, and each exceeds the project design requirement of steady-state tracking accuracy within 1 standard deviation of 10 ft.

Achieving the optimal solution to reservoir problems involves employing sophisticated simulation techniques, executing complex well-completion actions and following up with constant attention to the changes within a reservoir. Renowned petroleum engineer George Stewart offers in-depth information in his latest book, Wireline Formation Testing and Well Deliverability. A companion to his recent book, Well Test Design & Analysis, this newest technical volume covers the widest range of possible issues for reservoir engineering. Stewart's exhaustive explanations include the nuances of radial flow theory, examples of when to run production logs, and to well testing for drawdown in a commingled reservoir. The volume includes a CD containing chapters 13-17.

Book excerpt: Well Test Analysis for Multilayered Reservoirs with Formation Crossflow introduces the fundamentals of well test analysis of a multilayered reservoir with formation crossflow. The effects of reservoir parameters on wellbore pressure and flow rate are examined, as is a proper method that has been established to analyze well test data that leads to better determinations on the reservoir parameters for each layer of the reservoir. Focusing on multilayer models for data analysis, this reference explains the reasons for the existence of single-phase crossflow in multilayer reservoirs, exploring methods to establish them and presenting practical applications to utilize and implement for today's more complex reservoirs. Aiding in better well testing operations and models, this book is a one-stop solution for today's reservoir and production engineer, helping them understand every layer of their reservoir. - Includes real-world examples of well testing through multilayered reservoirs, whether with crossflow or with formation crossflow - Provides strong guidance and criteria of research on reservoir dynamic performance, such as physical models and mathematical models - Includes a new unsteady crossflow model for vertical interference testing in low-permeability zones - Describes interpretation methods for different cases in multilayer reservoirs, including a new model called semipermeable walls for stratified reservoirs, drawdown test procedures and layer-by-layer test procedures that are useful for shales between layers

Book excerpt: This monograph emphasizes modifications in flow behavior that are caused by formation heterogeneity, making the exposition useful to both the novice looking for a general understanding and the experienced analyst looking to improve, or find alternatives to, existing methodology. Organizes a diverse body of information that is scattered throughout the international petroleum and groundwater literature. Illustrates the limitation of most current interpretational procedures, which are based upon theories developed for homogeneous rock, rather than formations, and presents the basic mathematical theories that have been advanced to describe pressure behavior in heterogeneous rock. Covers a wide variety of heterogeneities, including: lateral permeability variation, vertical stratification, and natural fractures. Also discusses sealing faults, interbedded shales, sand pinch-outs, and finite drainage areas. The influence of gas-oil and water-oil contacts within well drainage areas on the pressure performance. Actual text data are used to illustrate theoretical developments.
