The process examined is a conventional silver-catalyzed process without methanol recycle. In this process, methanol is converted to Formaldehyde over a silver catalyst at conditions that prioritizes complete conversion over selectivity, making a methanol distillation column unnecessary. The final product obtained is Formalin, a 37 wt% Formaldehyde solution. This report was developed based essentially on the following reference(s): Keywords: Formalin, silver catalyst, formaldehyde solution, complete conversion

The process examined employs combined reforming for syngas generation similarly to the technologies developed by the following companies: Lurgi, Toyo, KBR, Johnson Matthey/Davy and Haldor-Topsoe. In this process, natural gas is converted into syngas in two steps: steam reforming and autothermal reforming. In the steam reformer, the natural gas reacts with steam and, in the secondary (autothermal) reformer, it reacts with oxygen. The syngas generated is then converted to Methanol. This report examines one-time costs associated with the construction of a United States-based plant and the continuing costs associated with the daily operation of such a plant. More specifically, it discusses: * Capital Investment, broken down by: - Total fixed capital required, divided in production unit (ISBL); infrastructure (OSBL) and contingency - Alternative perspective on the total fixed capital, divided in direct costs, indirect costs and contingency - Working capital and costs incurred during industrial plant commissioning and start-up * Production cost, broken down by: - Manufacturing variable costs (raw materials, utilities) - Manufacturing fixed costs (maintenance costs, operating charges, plant overhead, local taxes and insurance) - Depreciation and corporate overhead costs * Raw materials consumption, products generation and labor requirements * Process block flow diagram and description of industrial site installations (production unit and infrastructure) This report was developed based essentially on the following reference(s): (1) US Patent 8629190, issued to Lurgi in 2014; (2) US Patent 8388864, issued to Lurgi in 2013 Keywords: Synthesis Gas, Lurgi MegaMethanol, Johnson Matthey, JM Davy Technologies, Toyo, Kellogg Brown and Root, KBR, Johnson Matthey/Davy, Haldor-Topsoe

This book was released on 2018 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The formaldehyde (formalin) is important compound, as its uses are too wide, like in polymers, urea formaldehyde production and sterilization in medical equipment. The focus of this project is on developing and designing a chemical plant for the production of 40, 000 tons per year of formaldehyde of 55% purity from methanol by partial oxidation using highly selective catalyst (iron-molybdate) process. Partial oxidation process was chosen among other alternatives including partial oxidation using silver catalyst, CO hydrogenation in gas phase and liquid phase.[sic] that has the most acceptable and easily provided operating conditions as well as the production of highest conversion and formaldehyde selectivity and purity. Detailed process flow diagrams of both reaction and absorption processes were developed. Subsequently, material and energy balances were performed on a basis of 1074 ton mol per year of methanol is needed in order to get the desired production of 40, 000 ton per year of formaldehyde. The three main equipment of the process, which are the steam reformer, heat exchanger and absorber were then designed in details. Cost was estimated for this three major equipment and the entire plant cost was analyzed. Moreover, ethical, safety, and environmental issues related to the selected process were investigated and HAZOP was studied for the designed equipment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Density functional methods form the basis of a diversified and very active area of present days computational atomic, molecular, solid state and even nuclear physics. A large number of computational physicists use these meth ods merely as a recipe, not reflecting too much upon their logical basis. One also observes, despite of their tremendeous success, a certain reservation in their acceptance on the part of the more theoretically oriented researchers in the above mentioned fields. On the other hand, in the seventies (Thomas Fermi theory) and in the eighties (Hohenberg-Kohn theory), density func tional concepts became subjects of mathematical physics. In 1994 a number of activities took place to celebrate the thirtieth an niversary of Hohenberg-Kohn-Sham theory. I took this an occassion to give lectures on density functional theory to senior students and postgraduates in the winter term of 1994, particularly focusing on the logical basis of the the ory. Preparing these lectures, the impression grew that, although there is a wealth of monographs and reviews in the literature devoted to density func tional theory, the focus is nearly always placed upon extending the practical applications of the theory and on the development of improved approxima tions. The logical foundadion of the theory is found somewhat scattered in the existing literature, and is not always satisfactorily presented. This situation led to the idea to prepare a printed version of the lecture notes, which resulted in the present text.

This book was released on 2015-09-10 with total page 535 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the devastation that follows a major disaster, there is a need for multiple sectors to unite and devote new resources to support the rebuilding of infrastructure, the provision of health and social services, the restoration of care delivery systems, and other critical recovery needs. In some cases, billions of dollars from public, private and charitable sources are invested to help communities recover. National rhetoric often characterizes these efforts as a "return to normal." But for many American communities, pre-disaster conditions are far from optimal. Large segments of the U.S. population suffer from preventable health problems, experience inequitable access to services, and rely on overburdened health systems. A return to pre-event conditions in such cases may be short-sighted given the high costs - both economic and social - of poor health. Instead, it is important to understand that the disaster recovery process offers a series of unique and valuable opportunities to improve on the status quo. Capitalizing on these opportunities can advance the long-term health, resilience, and sustainability of communities - thereby better preparing them for future challenges. Healthy, Resilient, and Sustainable Communities After Disasters identifies and recommends recovery practices and novel programs most likely to impact overall community public health and contribute to resiliency for future incidents. This book makes the case that disaster recovery should be guided by a healthy community vision, where health considerations are integrated into all aspects of recovery planning before and after a disaster, and funding streams are leveraged in a coordinated manner and applied to health improvement priorities in order to meet human recovery needs and create healthy built and natural environments. The conceptual framework presented in Healthy, Resilient, and Sustainable Communities After Disasters lays the groundwork to achieve this goal and provides operational guidance for multiple sectors involved in community planning and disaster recovery. Healthy, Resilient, and Sustainable Communities After Disasters calls for actions at multiple levels to facilitate recovery strategies that optimize community health. With a shared healthy community vision, strategic planning that prioritizes health, and coordinated implementation, disaster recovery can result in a communities that are healthier, more livable places for current and future generations to grow and thrive - communities that are better prepared for future adversities.

Book excerpt: The leguminous plant Fabaceae, contains fibers, vitamins and mineral constituents. In traditional medicine, several parts of plants of the family of Fabaceae are responsible and useful for the treatment of various ailments. The authors explore the medicinal and chemical properties of Fabaceae and its different uses. The Oxytropic campestris complex is explored as well. The authors also review the detection of plant based adulterants in plant food products via the use of DNA based methods and markers. Numerous methods based on DNA analysis have contributed immensely in the food industry to monitor adulterations of food products of plant or animal origin.
