Book excerpt: The study concentrates on changes in Canada's approach to European integration after the watershed of 1989, examining the 1990 EC-Canada Transatlantic Declaration and the emergence of a Single European Market in 1993. Finally, it outlines the choices available to Canadian policy makers in the late 1990s as they sought to widen relations with the EU by proposing a trans-Atlantic free trade zone. This book details important stages in the evolution of Canada-EU economic, political, and security relations, a bilateral relationship that is destined to grow closer in the years ahead.

Download or read book Foreign Ownership Restrictions and Liberalization Reforms written by David Conklin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-12 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1997, this volume examines why foreign investment restrictions put in place during the 1950s and 1960s have been largely removed in recent years. Illustrations from ten countries are used to demonstrate the liberalizing movement, and the author analyzes the differences among sectors with regard to rationales and changes in rationales suggesting why many societies have chosen to retain certain restrictions even with the general liberalization. On this basis recommendations are presented in the book with regard to alternative mechanisms for achieving the original national objectives.

Book excerpt: The shift in orientation toward relatively open trading systems was reflected in the attitudes and participation of developing countries in the Uruguay Round. They involved themselves fully in formulating the rules of the new trading system, and also made significant offers both in the conventional area of reducing tariff protection on manufactures trade, and in the "new" areas, such as trade in services, trade in agriculture, and trade-related intellectual property.

Book Synopsis Global Competitive Strategies in the New World Economy by : Hafiz Mirza
Download or read book Global Competitive Strategies in the New World Economy written by Hafiz Mirza and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 1998 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introductory comments by Mirza (international business, U. of Bradford, UK) substantiate the suspicion that "globalization" and "regionalization" are indeed ambiguous concepts. In their thrust toward a general theory of gravity to explain this relationship in trade between countries, 29 representatives of academia and transnational corporations (TNCs) address facets of the new global economy: foreign direct investment, other international flows, and the role of governments and TNCs. Beyond a three chapter overview, 16 papers address regionalism in Europe, North America, and Asia. The final piece on integration strategies asks: "MNCs: From multidomestic to global and transnational firms?" Includes 20 figures, 20 tables, and maps of growth zones. Book Synopsis The Long Shadow of Informality by : Franziska Ohnsorge
Download or read book The Long Shadow of Informality written by Franziska Ohnsorge and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2022-02-09 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A large percentage of workers and firms operate in the informal economy, outside the line of sight of governments in emerging market and developing economies. This may hold back the recovery in these economies from the deep recessions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic--unless governments adopt a broad set of policies to address the challenges of widespread informality. This study is the first comprehensive analysis of the extent of informality and its implications for a durable economic recovery and for long-term development. It finds that pervasive informality is associated with significantly weaker economic outcomes--including lower government resources to combat recessions, lower per capita incomes, greater poverty, less financial development, and weaker investment and productivity.
Book Synopsis Informal Venture Capital by : Annareetta Lumme
Download or read book Informal Venture Capital written by Annareetta Lumme and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-09 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Small businesses in virtually all industrialized countries find it increasingly difficult to obtain finance from institutional sources. Banks have become more risk-averse; venture capital funds, previously of only marginal significance, are now often concentrating their investments on established companies; and management buyouts and buyins and pressures to reduce government spending have resulted in a reduction in public policy initiatives. In this context there is a growing interest in the role of the informal venture capital market as an alternative source of risk finance for small business. Informal Venture Capital: Investors, Investments and Policy Issues in Finland investigates the phenomenon of `business angels' - wealthy private individuals who invest in small businesses - who are increasingly recognized throughout the developed world as representing the most important source of venture capital for entrepreneurial businesses in their start-up and early growth stages. This volume answers key questions about these investors, and contributes significant new evidence on aspects of the informal venture capital market which have not been examined in previous studies. It further provides an authoritative assessment of the effectiveness of policy initiatives to stimulate the supply of informal venture capital, based on the experiences in Finland.
Book Synopsis Informal cross-border trade in Africa: How much? Why? And what impact? by : Bouet, Antoine
Download or read book Informal cross-border trade in Africa: How much? Why? And what impact? written by Bouet, Antoine and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2018-12-21 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Informal cross-border trade (ICBT) represents a prominent phenomenon in Africa. Several studies suggest that for certain products and countries, the value of informal trade may meet or even exceed the value of formal trade. This paper provides a review of existing efforts to measure informal trade. We list 18 initiatives aimed at measuring ICBT in Africa. The paper also summarizes discussions conducted with many stakeholders in Africa between December 2016 and May 2018 regarding the measurement, the determinants, and the implications of ICBT. The methodologies used to measure ICBT in Africa differ widely, but they do confirm that informal trade in Africa is both sizeable and volatile. Both evidence on the determinants of ICBT and discussions with stakeholders suggest that policies should aim to reduce the existing costs associated with formal trade and provide positive incentives for traders and producers to move into the formal economy in order to avoid the loss of economic potential stemming from informal trade.
