Book excerpt: After a decade of silence, Dee and Ben reunite for a road trip they once promised to take. It’s going to be a bumpy ride. Dee Matthews is the cohost of the smash-hit podcast Did I Forget To Tell You?, where she interviews family, friends, and past lovers. Nothing is off limits, except for one man (known on the show only as Name Redacted) who happens to be her high school best friend Ben. During their senior year spring break, Dee and Ben took a road trip to visit Ben’s grandma. They buried a time capsule in her backyard, pledging to return in ten years to open it. Then their friendship fell apart in spectacular fashion. They haven’t spoken to each other since. Ben Porter’s life since that moment has been unexciting but comfortable, until his grandma reveals a family secret that flips his whole world upside down. Her dying wish is for him to stop doing what is safest and go after what he really wants. He starts by showing up on Dee’s doorstep with every intention of fulfilling their long-ago promise. Despite her reservations, Dee can’t say no. This trip could be her chance to give her listeners the Name Redacted interview they’ve been begging for—and finally put her unresolved feelings for Ben to rest. As the miles fly by, Dee and Ben's friendship reignites. But the closer they get to reaching their destination, the more apparent it becomes that their attraction to each other cannot be ignored. Their last adventure ended in disaster, and they’re about to find out if any hope of a future together is in the rear view mirror.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Set against the backdrop of the black struggle in society, Slow Fade to Black is the definitive history of African-American accomplishment in film--both before and behind the camera--from the earliest movies through World War II. As he records the changing attitudes toward African-Americans both in Hollywood and the nation at large, Cripps explores the growth of discrimination as filmmakers became more and more intrigued with myths of the Old South: the "lost cause" aspect of the Civil War, the stately mansions and gracious ladies of the antebellum South, the "happy" slaves singing in the fields. Cripps shows how these characterizations culminated in the blatantly racist attitudes of Griffith's The Birth of a Nation, and how this film inspired the N.A.A.C.P. to campaign vigorously--and successfully--for change. While the period of the 1920s to 1940s was one replete with Hollywood stereotypes (blacks most often appeared as domestics or "natives," or were portrayed in shiftless, cowardly "Stepin Fetchit" roles), there was also an attempt at independent black production--on the whole unsuccessful. But with the coming of World War II, increasing pressures for a wider use of blacks in films, and calls for more equitable treatment, African-Americans did begin to receive more sympathetic roles, such as that of Sam, the piano player in the 1942 classic Casablanca. A lively, thorough history of African-Americans in the movies, Slow Fade to Black is also a perceptive social commentary on evolving racial attitudes in this country during the first four decades of the twentieth century.

Book excerpt: "Powerful. Disturbing. Heartbreaking. Smart. Occasionally gentle, often brutal. And always enthralling. An atypical setting, an actual historical event, masterfully layered characters and a sophisticated, seamless narrative -- An Untitled Lady is a standout, gripping historical romance, unlike any Regency you've ever read."--USA Today "The social turmoil in Manchester leading to the Peterloo Massacre of 1819 is the unusual setting for Penttila's quietly stunning, memorable debut novel. A very highly recommended book."--Historical Novel Society Shocking family news forces Madeline Wetherby to abandon her plans to marry an earl and settle for upstart Manchester merchant Nash Quinn. When she discovers that her birth father is one of the weavers her husband is putting out of work-and a radical leader-Maddie must decide which family she truly desires, the man of her heart or the people of her blood. An earl’s second son, Nash chose a life of Trade over Society. When protest marches spread across Lancashire, the pressure on him grows. If he can’t make both workers and manufacturers see reason he stands to lose everything: his business, his town, and his marriage. As Manchester simmers under the summer sun, the choices grow more stark for Maddie and Nash: Family or justice. Love or money. Life or death. Historical fiction with romantic elements. Set in Manchester, England, in 1819.

Book excerpt: Drawing on his experience as a student of ecology, his career in natural resource management, and his lifelong love of nature, Robert B. Weeden shows how living beings and their environments—foxes, bears, trees, ponds—have shaped the course of his life. An avid journal-keeper with a poetic sensibility, here Weeden has collected his thoughts and musings of the past thirteen years into an epistolary memoir that teaches us how everything is connected: pick up a feather and you will find the universe. By turns smart, funny, and touching, Small Forays into Big Spaces converses with other writers and scientists about topics ranging including natural history and human prehistory, creative imagination, humans’ evolving ideas of home, and the way we think of ourselves as both biological and cultural creatures. Above all, this book is an invitation to join the author in his small forays, and be inspired to create your own beginnings, full of childlike wonder at the miracle of life on Earth. Intended for lovers of nature, observers of the world, poets or poets-at-heart, and scientists reconnecting to the foundational aspects of our universe, Small Forays into Big Spaces is a book to take with you on life’s journeys, and to come back to time and time again.
