Book excerpt: Representations of fashionable femininity have multiplied throughout the 20th century, with complex versions of feminine identity being found in fashion store advertising, magazines, photography, and museum collections. This book examines the relationship between women's fashion, female representation and femininity in Britain throughout the 1900s. The authors unpick the dynamics of the fashion system and set fashion into the context of British social life, using the oral history accounts of women of all classes to highlight the meanings of particular fashions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Through a Local Prism, Loubna H. Skalli explores the forces of global cosmopolitanism, European and American, as they collide with local definitions of self, gender, and community in the Arab and Muslim culture. Since the late 1980's, Morocco, a post-colonial Muslim country, has faced dramatic political, economic, and sociocultural changes. Utilizing Moroccan women's magazines, Skalli explores the tensions and intersections between global forces and local traditions with close attention to their impact on gender definitions among Arab Muslims. Drawing on communication, media, and cultural theories, Skalli's research redefines culture, gender, and national identity in the context of the globalized world. The focus on the Middle East makes this book of great interest to scholars and students of cultural studies, communications, and women's studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Boy, has this been one heck of a spiritual journey! Little did I know that the path leading to the Kingdom of God would take me into and through the bowels of hell, but I made it.there and back. All I can say is thank God for God, His goodness, grace and mercy." -From the Introduction to "High Yellow".But A Black Woman Forever More! A Poetic Anthology of a Spiritual Journey It is said that to know one's self is the key to reaching new horizons and maximizing human potential-and it's true. But, truly knowing one's self without knowing one's spiritual identity is akin to a person who is physically blind driving a car. It's absolutely impossible. In "High Yellow".But A Black Woman Forever More! A Poetic Anthology of a Spiritual Journey, author Deborah M. Cofer highlights her efforts and sacrifices as she explores her inner self, others, and the world around her. Every poem is its own unique story of "bringing to the surface, hashing out, understanding, and making peace with" struggle in order to arrive at new heights in her evolution, both as a woman and as a member of the human race. Cofer's poetic accounts are both powerful and deeply profound.

Book excerpt: For any woman who last saw forty on her speedometer comes a sparkling new primer for aging—the French way—with grace and style. Frenchwomen of a certain age (over forty) are captivating and complex. They appear younger than their years and remain stylish throughout their lives. They look at birthdays as a celebration of a life well-lived and perhaps a good reason to go shopping before they dress to perfection for a celebration of another anniversaire. American-born journalist and blogger Tish Jett has lived among the French for years and has studied them and stalked them to learn their secrets. Exploring how their wardrobe, beauty, diet, and hair rituals evolve with time and how some aspects of their signature styles never change, Jett shows how Frenchwomen know their strengths, hide their weaknesses, and never talk about their fears, failures, or flaws. After all, in France, beauty, style, and charm have no expiration dates!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women's Voices in Ireland examines the letters and problems sent in by women to two Irish women's magazines in the 1950s and 60s, discussing them within their wider social and historical context. In doing so, it provides a unique insight into one of the few forums for female expression in Ireland during this period. Although in these decades more Irish women than ever before participated in paid work, trade unions and voluntary organizations, their representation in politics and public and their workforce participation remained low. Meanwhile, women who came of age from the late 1950s experienced a freedom which their mothers and aunts - married or single, in the workplace or the home - had never known. Diary and letters pages and problem pages in Irish-produced magazines in the 1950s and 60s enabled women from all walks of life to express their opinions and to seek guidance on the social changes they saw happening around them. This book, by examining these communications, gives a new insight into the history of Irish women, and also contributes to the ongoing debate about what women's magazines mean for women's history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores multiple facets of femininity for marriage in India. Using language as an entry point, it looks at how and why media representations of gender identities are constructed the way they are. It works with a unique synthesis of second-wave feminist discourse and empirical linguistic research to look at how the social institution of marriage becomes the site of interaction between language, ideology, psyche and culture. This volume also brings together the personal histories and views of women who discuss how media, modernity and social norms shape their ideas about marriage and selfhood. Deconstructing perceptions of femininity in contemporary India, the book will be of great interest to scholars and researchers of sociology, gender studies, linguistics, media and cultural studies and psychoanalysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our knowledge base is a product of Christianity, which has dominated Western thought processes for nearly two millennia. Now it has spread throughout the world. From obscure beginnings Christianity triumphed. A miracle, perhaps, but miracles have human explanations. Those given here are well documented. The religion that triumphed was far removed from the teaching of its founder. Each generation of Christians reverts back to Jesus teaching anew. Jesus Forever Reborn recognizes Christianity as a cultural phenomenon revitalized by each individual believer. From Justin Martyr to Jan Hus to John Wesley to Benedict Joseph Labre to Martin Luther King to you, this process continues. Christianity is a vitalforce. It’s not static. Proof of validity of Christianity is that it is the cultural base of a quarter of the world’s population. Indeed, it satisfies many souls. Moreover, although our own beliefs may be somewhat hazy we have absorbed the core values Jesus taught. Unfortunately, it is possible, for those with strong beliefs in a blessed afterlife, to be careless of damage done to the environment in this one. Nowadays it’s not the end of the world that is neigh but the end of humanity on planet Earth. Our current challenge is choice between self indulgence and our grandchildren’s very existence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines how regulatory and liability mechanisms have impacted upon product safety decisions in the pharmaceutical and medical devices sectors in Europe, the USA and beyond since the 1950s. Thirty-five case studies illustrate the interplay between the regulatory regimes and litigation. Observations from medical practice have been the overwhelming means of identifying post-marketing safety issues. Drug and device safety decisions have increasingly been taken by public regulators and companies within the framework of the comprehensive regulatory structure that has developed since the 1960s. In general, product liability cases have not identified or defined safety issues, and function merely as compensation mechanisms. This is unsurprising as the thresholds for these two systems differ considerably; regulatory action can be triggered by the possibility that a product might be harmful, whereas establishing liability in litigation requires proving that the product was actually harmful. As litigation normally post-dates regulatory implementation, the 'private enforcement' of public law has generally not occurred in these sectors. This has profound implications for the design of sectoral regulatory and liability regimes, including associated features such as extended liability law, class actions and contingency fees. This book forms a major contribution to the academic debate on the comparative utility of regulatory and liability systems, on public versus private enforcement, and on mechanisms of behaviour control.
