Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because of the pervasive and substantial decline of Atlantic salmon populations in Maine over the past 150 years, and because they are close to extinction, a comprehensive statewide action should be taken now to ensure their survival. The populations of Atlantic salmon have declined drastically, from an estimated half million adult salmon returning to U.S. rivers each year in the early 1800s to perhaps as few as 1,000 in 2001. The report recommends implementing a formalized decision-making approach to establish priorities, evaluate options and coordinate plans for conserving and restoring the salmon.

This book was released on 1999 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present here the results of our initial effort to use FIA data to assess biodiversity in Maine's forests. Biodiversity is a complex issue and, from the start, it was apparent that the FIA data are inadequate for examining all facets of biodiversity. Nevertheless, the FIA provides the most comprehensive and detailed data on Maine's forests and can be used to measure some indicators of forest biodiversity, in particular those related to tree species and stand characteristics.

Book excerpt: Human-induced climate change is an important environmental issue worldwide, as scientific studies increasingly demonstrate that human activities are changing the Earth's climate. Even if dramatic reductions in emissions were made today, some human-induced changes are likely to persist beyond the 21st century. The Kyoto Protocol calls for emissions reporting that separates out management-induced changes in greenhouse gases from those changes caused by indirect human effects (e.g., carbon dioxide fertilization, nitrogen deposition, or precipitation changes), natural effects, and past practices on forested agricultural lands. This book summarizes a September 2003 workshop where leaders from academia, government and industry came together to discuss the current state of scientific understanding on quantifying direct human-induced change in terrestrial carbon stocks and related changes in greenhouse gas emissions and distinguishing these changes from those caused by indirect and natural effects.

This book was released on 2002 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Sustainable forestry is right where organic gardening was a generation ago--at the very beginning of working out the techniques and technologies that will let logging thrive at a scale appropriate to both the human and natural communities that depend on the forest. This book is at--if you will pardon the expression--the absolute cutting edge of that process." Bill McKibben, author ofThe End of Nature, Hope, Human and Wild, Enough, and other books If the future really mattered . . . How would forests be managed to improve, rather than degrade, future timber values? How would trees be cut to minimize damage to the residual forest? How would foresters measure success towards minimizing damage? How would loggers be paid to lower logging impacts? How would forests be managed in a way that ensures the survival of all native species? How would woodlot owners be able to afford this type of management? Low-Impact Forestry: Forestry as if the Future Matteredanswers these questions and more. Using Maine as a case study, this book offers forestry goals and guidelines that emphasize quality and value while conserving biodiversity and supporting communities for the long term.
