Book Synopsis Ecosystem Management in the Boreal Forest by : Sylvie Gauthier
Download or read book Ecosystem Management in the Boreal Forest written by Sylvie Gauthier and published by PUQ. This book was released on 2009 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest Ecosystem Management. A management approach that aims to maintain healthy and resilient forest ecosystems by focusing on a reduction of differences between natural and managed landscapes to ensure long-term maintenance of ecosystem functions and thereby retain the social and economic benefits they provide to society. That is the definition of forest ecosystem management proposed in this book, which provides a summary of key ecological concepts supporting this approach. The book includes a review of major disturbance regimes that shape the natural dynamics of the boreal forest and gives examples from different Canadian boreal regions. Several projects implementing the forest ecosystem management approach are presented to illustrate the challenges created by current forestry practices and the solutions that this new approach can provide. In short, knowledge and understanding of forest dynamics can serve as a guide for forest management. Planning interventions based on natural dynamics can facilitate reconciliation between forest harvesting needs and the interests of other forest users.
Book Synopsis Forest Insect- and Disease-caused Impacts to Timber Resources of West-central Canada, 1988-1992 by : James Peter Brandt
Download or read book Forest Insect- and Disease-caused Impacts to Timber Resources of West-central Canada, 1988-1992 written by James Peter Brandt and published by Canadian Forest Service, Northern Forestry Centre. This book was released on 1995 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Describes the impacts caused by major forest insects (defoliators and bark beetles) and diseases (excluding those caused by fungi) to the timber resources of the Prairie Provinces and Northwest Territories in terms of wood volume losses due to tree mortality and growth reduction for the 1988-92 period. Most impacts were calculated using an automated system based on defoliation or infestation maps produced by geographic information systems and related inventory data. Results are presented for losses due to the following: spruce budworm (Choristoneura fumiferana), jack pine budworm (C. pinus pinus), forest tent caterpillar (Malacosoma disstria), large aspen tortrix (C. conflictana), bruce spanworm (Operophtera bruceata), mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae), spruce beetle (D. rufipennis), Douglas-fir beetle (D. pseudotsugae), Lodgepole pine dwarf mistletoe (Arceuthobium americanum), and wood decay.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers presented in this book cover the range of forest insect pest management activities in Canada. The first section contains papers on the current status of insect pests by region, including data on insect populations and extent of defoliation caused by the insect. The next section covers pest management technology, including the use of insecticides, insect viruses, fungal pathogens, growth regulators, antifeedants, pheromones, natural predators, and aerial spraying. The third section contains papers on the application of technology and equipment for forest pest control, and includes papers on the impacts of insecticides on the forest environment. The fourth section describes operational control programs by province. The final paper presents future strategies for the management of forest pests. An author index is included.

Book Synopsis Distribution of Severe Dwarf Mistletoe Damage in West-central Canada by : James Peter Brandt
Download or read book Distribution of Severe Dwarf Mistletoe Damage in West-central Canada written by James Peter Brandt and published by Special Report. This book was released on 1998 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The distribution of lodgepole pine and jack pine stands severely damaged by lodgepole pine dwarf mistletoe, Arceuthobium americanum Nutt. Ex Engelm., is described for Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. The distribution of affected stands is based on aerial and ground surveys of jack (Pinus banksiana Lamb.) and lodgepole pone (P. contorta Dougl, ex Loud. var latifolia Engelm.) forests conducted between 1984 and 1996. Depending on method of determination, between 455 000 and 585 000 ha of jack pine forests and 80 000 - 85 000 ha of lodgepole pine forests were severely diseased by dwardf mistletoe. These areas account for about 5% of the total area of pine in the study area. Annual losses due to reductions in growth and tree mortality were estimated at 2 347 000 m3. Most diseased jack pine stands occurred in the Boreal Plains ecozone, while diseased lodgepole pine stands occurred approximately equally in both the Boreal Plains and the Montane Cordillera ecozones. The report includes maps and a CD-Rom containing an Arc/Info export-format file of the coverage of pine areas severely damaged by dwarf mistletoe in west-central Canada.

Book Synopsis Forest Health Monitoring in West-central Canada in 1996 by : James Peter Brandt
Download or read book Forest Health Monitoring in West-central Canada in 1996 written by James Peter Brandt and published by Canadian Forest Service, Northern Forestry Centre. This book was released on 1997 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summarizes 1996 results of forest health monitoring activities in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and the Northwest Territories, based on assessments made on 17 permanent biomonitoring plots and assessments of major forest disturbances. Brief descriptions are given of major forest disturbances in the region, including forest tent caterpillar defoliation, lodgepole pine dwarf mistletoe infestation, spruce budworm defoliation, and forest fires. Current climatic data from across the region are compared to 30-year normals for a number of parameters. Details of the assessments completed on the 17 permanent biomonitoring plots are also presented, and the state of regeneration on the plots is discussed. In addition, the current status of quarantine pests in Canada of concern to the forestry sector is described.
