Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Field Book of Western Wild Flowers In this little book a very large number of the commoner wild flowers growing in the United States, west of the Rocky Mountains, are pictured and described. It is the first attempt to supply a popular field book for the whole West. The field is vast, including within its limits all sorts of climate and soil, producing thousands of flowers, infinite in variety and wonderful in beauty, their environment often as different as that of Heine's Pine and Palm. In such strange homes as the Grand Canyon and the Petrified Forest of Arizona, or the deserts of Utah and southern California, we find the oddest desert plants, forced to curious expedients in order to sustain life amidst almost perpetual heat and drought, but often displaying blossoms of such brilliance and delicacy that they might well be envied by their more fortunate sisters, flourishing beside shady waterfalls, in a "happy valley" like Yosemite, or a splendid mountain garden, such as spreads in many-colored parterres of bloom around the feet of Mt. Rainier. On the wind-swept plains hundreds of flowers are to be found; many kinds of hardy plants brighten the salty margins of the sea cliffs, or bloom, at the edge of the snow on rocky mountain peaks, while;quantities of humble, everyday flowers border our country roadsides or tint the hills and meadows with lavish color. The field includes the States of Washington, Oregon, California, Idaho, Nevada, Utah and Arizona and to designate this whole field the term West is used in this book. The term Northwest designates Washington, Oregon, northern Idaho, and northern California, and the term Southwest covers southern California and Arizona. The flowers found only in the Rocky Mountains are not included, and it may be noted here that exceedingly few of the western flowers cross the Rockies and are found in the East. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Western Flower Guide: Wild Flowers of the Rockies and West to the Pacific The preparation of a Pacific Coast Wild Flower Guide OI tne present small proportions has naturally involved a large exercise Of elimination. The flowers herein illustrated number 250, and the brief descriptions in non-technical language include besides these a few more whose resem blance to certain Of those depicted makes identification relatively easy. The selection Of the subjects has been based mainly upon the hold which such flowers have upon the popular heart on the Pacific Coast, and also to some extent by the part they have played in the human life Of the region. A few introduced plants - not uncommon in other parts Of the world, and some of them even homely - have been included in the descriptions, because their abundance, their uses, or their habits make them subjects Of interest to travelers and the general student. While the region covered in the Guide is principally the three Coast States, California, Oregon, and Washington, in many cases the plants described are also found eastward in the States from Idaho south to Arizona, and in some cases as far east as Colorado, New Mexico, and Texas. Plains and valleys, seaside and mountains, as well as the Southwestern desert region (a marvellously rich floral field for a part Of the year) are represented. While this book has been prepared out Of a personal acquaintance of many years with the field, the author desires to acknowledge his indebtedness to the following works upon which he has had occasion to draw for special descriptions and points - Gray' s Synoptical Flora of North America, Jepson' s Flora Of California (in course of publication), Hall's Compositae of Southern California and Yosemite Flora, Parson's Wild Flowers Of California, Armstrong's Western Wild Flowers, Meehan's Native Flowers and Ferns Of the United States, and the valuable-monographs of Chestnut, Coville, Havard, and Barrows on the Indian uses of native plants. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wild Flower Book: For Young People The little girl who tells this story goes from the city to live in the country with her grandmother. There, through the spring, summer, and the cool, crisp autumn, she roams through woods, meadows and swamps, and sees many things that pique her curiosity. Most often it is the wild flowers she wishes to know about; although she notices the birds, the trees, and even a bullfrog. She sees that the sky changes, and wonders why the dewdrops cling so long to blades of grass. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wild Flowers At Bethlehem. Now the hour hath come, and the Babe is born, And our hope-filled hearts beat high and fast; For we know this is Joy's supremest hour, And this time of grace cannot always last. Let us haste away to the manger crib, To lay our hearts at the Infant's feet, To place our hopes in the Mother's hands, And unite in the mystic scene so sweet. Let us shrink not back from the midnight air, But joyfully follow the shepherds afar: We will keep within pace of the Orient band, And steadily walk in the trail of the star. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rocky Mountain Wild Flowers, 1930 In catering to the public through the medium of this catalog, we Wish to say it is our earnest desire to be worthy of the confidence of every patron, that every order, regardless of how small or how large, will be filled with the most scrupulous care with the best quality and size of varieties, and true to name. All flower lovers should appreciate the opportunity they now have of becoming familiar with the beautiful wild flowers of the Rocky Mountain region. There is no practical reason why many of our most beautiful wild flowers should not be much in evidence in cultivated gardens, combining as they do, ease of culture with an airiness and grace, and beautiful soft, re fined colors, which places them in a class entirely by them selves. We endeavor to give sufficient cultural instructions to make success reasonably certain, and if followed, our patrons will experience no difficulty in attaining satisfactory results. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wild Flowers of Western Canada Silver - feather is a better name because of its plume-like leaves, silvered beneath by long, silky hairs and usually green on top. Sometimes, however, the upper surface has also a thin, silky covering. This variation with its cause is nicely shown by two patches beside the house of the Writer. One is close to the foundation on the south side in poor soil, exposed to full sunlight, and the leaves are gray green. The other is on the west side in rich loam, getting no sun'. Until after eleven o'clock, and here the upper surface is bright green. The yellow flowers are produced over a long season, as they spring from the axils of small leaves on the strawberry-like runners sent out in profusion. These runners are usually from one to three feet long, and from them new plants start every few inches. A mat of vegetation is soon formed. In producing and directing their runners, the plants exhibit something very like intelligence, as the following instance will show. On the shore of a little lake in 1919 grew a vigorous Silver - weed. The dry' season lowered the water until a strip of sandy bottom eight feet wide was exposed. The plant was crowded behind and on either side by competing neighbors, but in front lay this land of promise, so, with coneen trated energy, a. Single runner was pushed out straight towards it. By the twenty - fourth of August an advance of over five feet had been made, and eighteen young plants established on the line of march were aiding the parent in its forward movement. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wild Flowers Worth Knowing A still more popular edition of what has proved to the author to be a surprisingly popular book has been pre pared by the able hand of Mr. Asa Don Dickinson, and is now offered in the hope that many more people will find the wild flowers in Nature's garden all about us well worth knowing. For flowers have distinct objects in life and are everything they are for the most justifiable of reasons, i. E. The perpetuation and the improvement of their species. The means they employ to accomplish these ends are so various and so consummately clever that, in learning to understand them, we are brought to realize how similar they are to the fundamental aims of even the human race. Indeed there are few life principles that plants have not worked out satisfactorily. The problems of adapting oneself to one's environment, of insuring healthy families, of starting one's children well in life, of founding new colonies in distant lands, of the cooperative method of conducting business as opposed to the individualistic, of laying up treasure in the bank for future use, of punishing vice and rewarding virtue - these and many other problems of mankind the flowers have worked out with the help of insects, through the ages To really understand what the wild flowers are doing, what the scheme of each one is, besides looking beautiful. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Wild Flowers in Their Native Haunts The botanical and local descriptions accompanying the plates, have been furnished by the artist, Mr. E. Whitefield. The verses, begin ning She sleeps. Inserted in Love beyond the Grave, were presented for publication by a friend. With these exceptions, the author is alone responsible for every thing in the volume which has not the name of its writer affixed. To the friends who have assisted her in this undertaking, she would fain offer her heart-warm thanks. Of the high value of their aid, every intelligent reader can judge, but of the spontaneous kind ness with which that aid was afforded, this is not the place to speak, since it would be invading the rights and encroaching upon the privi leges of that friendship which claims to belong to social, even more than to literary life. It is only necessary to add that every thing contained in the volume was written expressly for it, with the exception of a few short poems, selected from the author's early writings, which after appearing under other Signatures, are now for the first time claimed.
