Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Changes in recreation values after wildfire in the northern Rocky Mountains were determined by estimating the difference in the present net value of recreation activity with and without fire. To estimate the value of recreation activity at burned and unburned sites, a contingent market valuation approach was used. Hypothetical market transactions were created by soliciting bids from recreationists, which they based on phorographs of recreation sites depicting scenes before and after two kinds of fire--one of low intensity and the other of high intensity. They were asked what they would pay for the situation they most preferred. The results suggest that net value changes in recreation resources are generally low, and possibly insignificant in economic efficiency analyses of fire management programs.

Book excerpt: In the last decade, the fire management program of the Forest Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture, has come under closer scrutiny because of ever-rising program costs. The Forest Service has responded by conducting several studies analyzing the economic efficiency of its fire management program. Some components of the analytical models have been difficult to develop, particularly changes in the net value and output of timber caused by wildfire.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wildfire is a naturally recurring phenomenon in the forests of the Northern Rockies. Historical accounts of earliest explorations contain references to areas denuded by fire, and the massive forest fires of this century have been documented. Written records before 1800 are sketchy, but charcoal in the ground, burned stumps, and fire scars in tree cross sections provide evidence of a forest-fire history predating the oldest living vegetation in the Northern Rockies. Thus, it is generally accepted that these forests have evolved in the presence of repeated fires. --First paragraph.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The health of many Rocky Mountain ecosystems is in decline because of the policy of excluding fire in the management of these ecosystems. Fire exclusion has actually made it more difficult to fight fires, and this poses greater risks to the people who fight fires and for those who live in and around Rocky Mountain forests and rangelands. This paper discusses the extent of fire exclusion in the Rocky Mountains, then details the diverse and cascading effects of suppressing fires in the Rocky Mountain landscape by spatial scale, characteristic, and vegetation type. Also discussed are the varied effects of fire exclusion on some important, keystone ecosystems and human concerns.

The Mack Lake fire, a plume-dominated fire, is shown as a solid line, and the Sundance fire. A wind-driven fire, is shown as a dashed line. As the name implies, a crown fire is a fire carried through the crowns of living forests. Before reaching this condition, a fire can go through several stages of development. Typically, a fire may Spread for some time in sur face fuels such as grass, forest litter, or shrubs, without interacting with the overstory. It may even smolder in forest duff for days or weeks until burning conditions improve and the fire becomes active and begins to Spread. Beighley and Bishop (1990) provide an excellent description of the transition from surface fire to crown fire in high-elevation forests. Favor able conditions for a crown fire include.
