Digitalisation, including ICT-enabled technologies (ICT-ETs) such as robotics and artificial intelligence (AI), are likely to have major impacts on the nature and location of work over the next 10 years. Technologies are diffusing much faster than in the past and many people are talking about a 'Fourth Industrial Revolution'. It is expected to fundamentally change where we work, how we work, who will work and how people will perceive work. The European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA) therefore commissioned a foresight project on ICT and work location to develop scenarios of the future and identify potential new and emerging OSH risks. This is in line with the current European Commission strategic documents (EC, 2014; EC, 2017a), which identify the need for a proactive approach to identifying future risks to workers' safety and health in a continuously changing world of work. It also supports the implementation of a decent European Digital Single Market in line with the principles of the European Pillar of Social Rights, which constitutes the broader policy framework for action in the area of social protection and basic rights and includes the right to fair working conditions (EC, 2017b).

Book excerpt: Work and workplaces are constantly changing. This may give rise to new risks and challenges to workers' safety and health, which must be anticipated and addressed. Through its foresight projects, EU-OSHA aims to anticipate changes -- technological, societal, political and economic -- that may result in the emergence of new occupational safety and health (OSH) challenges. The objective is to support timely prevention of future OSH risks, thus ensuring that tomorrow's workplaces are safe and healthy.

Book excerpt: The City of Manchester, once the birthplace of the 1st Industrial Revolution, is today a pioneering hub of the 4th Industrial Revolution (Industry 4.0), offering Industry 4.0 solutions in advanced materials, engineering, healthcare and social sciences. Indeed, the creation of some of the city’s greatest academic institutions was a direct outcome of the industrial revolution, so it was something of a homecoming that the Sustainable Smart Manufacturing (S2M) Conference was hosted by The University of Manchester in 2019. The conference was jointly organised by The University of Manchester, The University of Lisbon and The Polytechnic of Leiria – the latter two bringing in a wealth of expertise in how Industry 4.0 manifests itself in the context of sustainably evolving, deeply-rooted cities. S2M-2019 instigated the development of 61 papers selected for publication in this book on areas of Smart Manufacturing, Additive Manufacturing and Virtual Prototyping, Materials for Healthcare Applications and Circular Economy, Design Education, and Urban Spaces.

Book excerpt: This handbook brings together an international group of experts to offer a comprehensive resource on occupational stress. Including both theoretical and practical perspectives, it examines ways to reduce and treat stress, as well as the physiological, psychosocial, and neural underpinnings of it. Through 24 original and carefully selected essays, the authors offer new insights, resources, and tools to better understand, manage and treat stress in a professional environment. The book’s chapters are divided into 5 parts that address the conceptualisation of stress; present theoretical models (including the contribution of animal models); examine the psychological and physiological aspects of stress and ways to assess it; delve into psychosocial risks at work and their assessment (means and methods); and investigate how to cope with stress at work, including resilience training. Aspects such as the effects of leadership, simulation training, and stress-tests for hiring are also presented and discussed. The volume ends by exploring broader considerations regarding stress and culture, stress and occupational sectors (with a chapter focusing on studentship), and the pharmacology of stress. This handbook is an essential reference for researchers in organisational psychology, as well as business and management and education, who are interested in stress. Healthcare workers and therapists who treat stress will also find an invaluable resource in this far-reaching yet accessible collection.

Book excerpt: Available online: https://pub.norden.org/temanord2021-507/ The psychosocial work environment encompasses a wide variety of factors that impact occupational health. As Nordic work life evolves, changes in the work environment must be accounted for to maintain a sustainable, healthy work life. This report discusses the results of two studies: 1) a literature study of impacts of new technologies on work environment and health, and 2) a Delphi study compiling Nordic experts' views on the future of the Nordic work environment. A central finding is that as complexity and uncertainty increase, a steady focus on protective work environment resource, perhaps most markedly worker autonomy, is important to meet future challenges. Many developments are likely to challenge and disrupt the high quality Nordic work environment. However, appropriate utilization of existing work environment resources may counteract possible adverse effects.

Book excerpt: Modern workplaces are following a strong trend of increasing flexible working practices and approaches, offering more flexibility in working times, working places, work organization, and work relations as the result of new information and communication technologies. This book brings together a group of internationally recognized experts in the field of flexible work to examine the psychological and social implications of these practices, describing the current state of research and empirically-based practices in this field. It focuses on organizational, job, and individual factors related to the quality of working life, and identifies potential risk groups where the benefits of flexible work are suppressed or not realized. Ideal for organizations implementing or considering implementing flexible work, for professionals and researchers in work and organizational psychology, and for HR professionals, this volume is an invaluable overview of rapidly changing work norms and their impact on working life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Nordic future of workHow will work and working life in the Nordic countries change in the future? This is the question to be addressed in the project The Future of Work: Opportunities and Challenges for the Nordic Models. This initial report describes the main drivers and trends expected to shape the future of work. It also reviews the main distinctions of the Nordic model and recent developments in Nordic working lives, pointing towards the kind of challenges the future of work may pose to the Nordic models. Too often, debates about the future narrowly focus on changes in technology. This report draws attention to the broader drivers and political-institutional frameworks influencing working life developments, aiming to spur debate about how the interaction of changes in demography, climate, globalization and digital technologies may influence Nordic working lives in the coming decades.
